BACKGROUND: Wrist hemiarthroplasty has emerged as a motion-sparing option for severe wrist arthritis. It is technically easy with advantages of limited bone resection and no risk of nonunion. Given the relative infancy of the procedure in clinical practice, there are limited data on patient outcomes.
METHODS: Eleven patients were treated with wrist reconstructive hemiarthroplasty. Indications included 1 patient with scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse, 9 patients with scapholunate advanced collapse, and 1 patient with capitolunate arthritis. Average age was 63 years; average follow-up was 4 y

The optimal imaging protocols for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the wrist ligaments are discussed, including the use of magnetic resonance arthrography, and 3 Tesla (T) versus 1.5 T magnetic field strength. The normal MRI appearance of the triangular fibrocartilage complex, capsular, and interosseous wrist ligaments is briefly covered to point out potential diagnostic pitfalls. Numerous examples of common ligamentous pathology discernible on MRI are provided, along with the latest estimates of diagnostic sensitivity and specificity provided by the literature.

Since its introduction more than three decades ago, wrist arthroscopy has continually evolved. The procedure has a wide list of indications, including diagnostic and management applications. The scope of practice for the wrist arthroscopic surgeon includes management of triangulofibrocartilage complex pathology, evaluation and management of carpal instability, assistance in fracture reduction of the radius and scaphoid, treatment of trapeziometacarpal synovitis and arthritis, distal ulnar and carpal bone excisions, and salvage procedures. In addition, innovations such as new portals and smalle

PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to address the incidence of complications associated with wrist arthroscopy. Given the paucity of information published on this topic, an all-inclusive review of published wrist arthroscopy complications was sought.
METHODS: Two independent reviewers performed a literature search using PubMed, Google Scholar, EBSCO, and Academic Megasearch using the terms "wrist arthroscopy complications," "complications of wrist arthroscopy," "wrist arthroscopy injury," and "wrist arthroscopy." Inclusion criteria were (1) Levels I to V evidence, (2) "complic

The wrist is a complex structure with an extensive differential diagnosis for a presenting mass. However, the vast majority of hand and wrist masses are benign, and many of these have a distinctive radiographic appearance. In this article, the imaging characteristics of the most common entities are reviewed with particular attention to magnetic resonance appearance. The 3 most common hand and wrist lesions include ganglion cysts, giant cell tumors of the tendon sheath, and hemangiomas. Other common lesions that can be diagnosed radiographically include lipomas, neural sheath tumors, infection

Although the anatomy of the hand and wrist is complex and the pathologic conditions encountered are diverse, many of the disease processes are localized, and in many situations, the clinical question is specific and limited. Because of this, ultrasound has always been an attractive imaging modality for evaluation of hand and wrist problems. Unfortunately, intrinsic difficulties in ultrasound image acquisition and interpretation have slowed the acceptance of hand and wrist sonography. Recently, however, new developments in high-resolution transducers and signal processing have dramatically impr

We have analyzed the results of 22 total wrist denervations following Wilhelm's technique and a series of 30 patients treated with denervation of the posterior interosseous nerve alone. Results of denervation have been classified depending on the pain (visual analogue scale) as other parameters (mobility and strength) have not been found to have any statistical significance. Results after partial denervation are worse than results achieved by total denervation.

The wrist is a complex joint that biomechanically transmits forces generated at the hand through to the forearm. The radial side of the wrist carries 80% of the axial load and the ulnar side the remaining 20% of the load. The incidence of wrist (and hand) injuries in the sporting population is approximately 25%. This tends to be higher in those sports using the hand and wrist, and when the potential for trauma is present. The injuries are divided into 4 categories: overuse, nerve (and vascular), traumatic, and weight-bearing injuries. Overuse injuries are common in sports involving the hand an

Driller wrist is an occupational disease with pathophysiologic changes resulting from recurrent use of vibratory tools. The entity includes the clinical finding of Raynaud phenomena with or without associated bone changes in the wrist. Osseous involvement is usually mild and is associated with cystic changes of the carpals and occasionally other structures. Two cases are reported, one with typical cystic abnormalities and the other with more severe disease which progressed to joint instability.

Arthrosis and autoimmune arthritis frequently lead to major impairment of hand function. Primary therapy consists of well- tried conservative treatments and joint preserving surgical options for special indications. In advanced stages silicon spacers remain the gold standard surgical option for replacement of proximal interphalangeal and metacarpophalgeal joints of the fingers. Alternatively, surface replacement prostheses can restore the biomechanical properties of these joints more porperly. In case of the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint of the thumb, arthroplasty is gaining popularity as modern

Neuropathic symptoms involving the wrist are a common clinical presentation that can be due to a variety of causes. Imaging plays a key role in differentiating distal nerve lesions in the wrist from more proximal nerve abnormalities such as a cervical radiculopathy or brachial plexopathy. Imaging complements electrodiagnostic testing by helping define the specific lesion site and by providing anatomical information to guide surgical planning. This article reviews nerve anatomy, normal and abnormal findings on ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging, and common and uncommon causes of neu

Rice bodies are a rare finding in medicine and offer a therapeutic challenge. As their occurrence varies over multiple rheumatic as well as infectious diseases, multiple hypotheses have been made about their origin. While rice bodies are most frequently reported in the shoulder and knee joints, flexor tendon synovitis with accompanying rice bodies is rarer. We report a case of extensive flexor tenosynovitis with rice bodies in the wrist in a 90-year-old patient with seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. The patient reported a 5-month history of painful swelling of the right wrist. Ultrasound show

Overuse is defined as repetitive microtrauma that overwhelms the tissues' ability to adapt. Microtrauma represents damage at molecular level and can be produced by either a tension or shear load. The wrist and hand are vulnerable to upper extremity overuse injuries related to work or sports activities that require repetitive movements, often coupled with weight bearing. These injuries create challenges for orthopedic surgeons and radiologists because of the demands on athletes and employees. A thorough understanding of the mechanism of injury, activities, and magnetic resonance imaging finding

The hand and wrist are rare sites for tuberculosis (TB) and account for < 1% of all skeletal TB. Though rare, TB of the wrist is a cause of major morbidity. A common feature in the available reports on wrist TB is a delay in diagnosis causing residual stiffness and pain after treatment. Although TB of the wrist has a varied presentation, the majority of lesions respond to conservative treatment. We report a 12-year-old girl who presented with wrist swelling, having intercarpal, carpometacarpal, and radiocarpal joint involvement which turned out to be tuberculous and it healed with residual def

The distal radioulnar joint, the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) and the wrist are stabilized by many ligaments allowing not only a wide range of motion but also providing sufficient stability. The complex arrangement of carpal ligaments and prosupination around the forearm joint enables multiaxial motion patterns. In the wrist, intra-articular ligaments can be differentiated from extra-articular capsular ligaments as well as intrinsic and extrinsic ligament courses. Imaging is essential for classification of dynamic and static instability patterns. This review article illustrates the

The wrist and hand form a highly complex organ that is of great importance in almost all daily activities. The hand serves as a tool and an organ of sense. Injuries of the hand and wrist as well as mechanical, neurological or systemic inflammatory changes are common. Taking a detailed history can already lead to a diagnosis. Almost all structures of the hand are easily accessible for clinical examination, i. e. inspection, palpation and clinical tests, including dynamic testing. Diagnostic imaging completes the examination procedure.

A 79-year-old man presented with a painless, soft, subcutaneous mass lesion of the right volar wrist that had been slowly growing for 3 years. A cloudy, yellow serous effusion was aspirated from the punctured mass, from which Phaeoacremonium spp., an extremely rare cause of tenosynovitis, was isolated in culture. Total synovectomy was performed without the use of antifungal agents. No recurrence or complications occurred as of 6 months after surgery. Fungal infection is rare but should be considered in the differentiation of chronic tenosynovitis.
