A preliminary study on submariners with xerostomia after a 3-month deployment.

To observe the clinical manifestations and salivary secretion of xerostomia patients in submariners who engaged in a three-month deployment. The general conditions and clinical examination of the 136 submariners were evaluated, by which the patients with xerostomia were screened out and their clinical manifestations were recorded. Besides, the flow rate of unstimulated saliva and stimulated saliva was measured and calculated. Subsequently, the related factors of xerostomia were quantitatively classified and statistically analyzed. In all the involved submariners, 42 were diagnosed to have xero

Medication-Induced Xerostomia and Hyposalivation in the Elderly: Culprits, Complications, and Management.

Medication-induced xerostomia and hyposalivation will increasingly become oral health issues for older and geriatric patients because of the likely high prevalence of medication intake and polypharmacy, with a complex negative impact on other symptoms such as dysphagia, caries incidence, malnutrition, and quality of life. All healthcare professionals are encouraged to investigate dry mouth symptoms among their patients, since diagnosis can easily be performed within daily clinical practice. This practical article also provides a review of available treatment options, which include medication c

A longitudinal study of medication exposure and xerostomia among older people.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence of xerostomia among a population of older people over a 6-year period, with particular attention to medications as risk factors. BACKGROUND: Understanding the natural history of xerostomia requires longitudinal epidemiological research, but only one study has examined changes in xerostomia over time. While medication is a recognised risk factor for dry mouth, the role of particular medication categories continues to be controversial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Older South Australians (aged 60+) underwent an interview and dental examination at baseline, and th

Sodium-hyaluronate mouthwash on radiotherapy-induced xerostomia: a randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Radiotherapy-induced xerostomia (RIX) is one of the most common adverse effects of radiotherapy (RT) in head and neck cancer patients (HNC) and a major determinant of survivors' quality of life. The primary objective was to evaluate the reduction of patients' xerostomia symptoms after the utilisation of a sodium-hyaluronate mouthwash compared to a placebo solution. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the improvement of quality of life and to evaluate the patients' satisfaction. METHODS: The protocol was approved by the ethical committee (Ref. 50,053/19) and registered at C

Association between xerostomia and peri-implant health: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dental implants are a long-term and reliable solution to replace missing dentition, but subject to different patient-related and biological changes that could alter its success. Xerostomia, or the alteration of the normal salivary flow, can impair oral function and potentially affect the success of any treatment, including implant outcomes. The purpose of this study is to study the association between xerostomia and peri-implantitis. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using records of patients who received dental implants between 2010 and 2023 at the University of

Association between medication-induced xerostomia and orofacial pain: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Xerostomia (or oral dryness) is most commonly caused by medications that affect saliva secretion, and is often accompanied by symptoms of orofacial pain. Medication-induced xerostomia may or may not be associated with objectively demonstrable hyposalivation. The present study attempted to systematically identify an association between medication-induced xerostomia and orofacial pain. METHOD AND MATERIALS: A systematic search was conducted using the following databases: WoS, PubMed, SCOPUS, and MEDLINE. The search terms used were: xerostomia OR "dry mouth" AND medication AND ("oral

Xerostomia aggravates ligation-induced peri-implantitis: A preclinical in vivo study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have indicated that xerostomia is a critical factor affecting periodontitis; nonetheless, it is controversial whether xerostomia impairs peri-implant tissue. The objective of this experimental study was to evaluate the effect of xerostomia on the peri-implant hard and soft tissues in the rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Implants were placed in bilateral maxillae of male Wistar rats. The animals underwent submandibular and sublingual gland resection on both sides (DRY group) or sham operation (CTR group). Silk ligatures were placed around one side of abutments, wh

Delta-radiomics features during radiotherapy improve the prediction of late xerostomia.

The response of the major salivary glands, the parotid glands, to radiation dose is patient-specific. This study was designed to investigate whether parotid gland changes seen in weekly CT during treatment, quantified by delta-radiomics features (Δfeatures), could improve the prediction of moderate-to-severe xerostomia at 12 months after radiotherapy (Xer12m). Parotid gland Δfeatures were extracted from in total 68 planning and 340 weekly CTs, representing geometric, intensity and texture characteristics. Bootstrapped forward variable selection was performed to identify the best predictors of

Submandibular gland transfer: a new method of preventing radiation-induced xerostomia.

OBJECTIVE: Radiation-induced xerostomia is a significant morbidity of radiation therapy in the management of patients with head and neck cancers. We have recently reported a method of transfer of one submandibular gland to the submental space in a small pilot series of eligible surgical patients. The submental space was shielded during postoperative radiation therapy. The transferred gland continued to function after the completion of radiation therapy and none of the patients developed xerostomia. The purpose of this article is to present the technique of submandibular gland transfer in detai
