Supple bodies, healthy minds: yoga, psychedelics and American mental health.

Much discussion about mental health has revolved around treatment models. As interdisciplinary scholarship has shown, mental health knowledge, far from being a neutral product detached from the society that generated it, was shaped by politics, economics and culture. By drawing on case studies of yoga, religion and fitness, this article will examine the ways in which mental health practices-sometimes scientific, sometimes spiritual-have been conceived, debated and applied by researchers and the public. More specifically, it will interrogate the relationship between yoga, psychedelics, South As

Yoga for Tobacco Cessation: A Randomized Controlled Trial (QUIT-SMART).

BACKGROUND: Current tobacco cessation strategies, including pharmacological interventions and supportive therapies, have limitations related to adherence and relapse. Emerging evidence suggests that yoga plays a significant role in tobacco cessation through psycho-behavioral mechanisms. This study was conducted to evaluate the role of yoga among adults who used both smoking and smokeless forms (SLT) of tobacco. METHODS: A prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded endpoint trial was conducted among adult tobacco users. Participants were randomly assigned to either the yoga (n = 64) or the e

Raja Yoga meditation: A personal spiritual experience and narrative inquiry.

The COVID-19 pandemic catalysed widespread psychological distress, daily disruptions, and pervasive uncertainty. This paper presents a narrative inquiry exploring a personal spiritual journey with Raja Yoga meditation, initiated via an online course during the pandemic lockdown. The account investigates the interconnected roles of spiritual knowledge, meditation practice, and selfless service (Sewa) in enhancing psychological well-being and fostering profound inner transformation. Additionally, a unique subjective experience during a residential spiritual retreat is analysed through both spiri

Yoga-Based Interventions in Low-Income Populations: A Scoping Review.

Introduction: The popularity of yoga has surged in recent years; however, yoga practitioners have remained a largely homogenous population. Research reflects that most practitioners are of a higher socioeconomic status. There are access barriers to yoga for lower income individuals, likely due to factors such as financial constraints and logistical challenges. The primary goal of this review was to synthesize literature on yoga research among low-income populations and better understand the feasibility and acceptability of such interventions. A secondary goal was to assess the consistency of m

Interest in yoga among fibromyalgia patients: an international internet survey.

Studies in circumscribed clinical settings have reported the adoption of yoga by many fibromyalgia (FM) patients. However, it is unclear from existing studies which types of yoga practices FM patients are typically engaging in and the extent to which they experience yoga as helpful or not. The purpose of this study was to survey FM patients in many different regions to inquire about their engagement in various yoga practices, the perceived benefits, and the obstacles to further practice. A 13-question Internet survey of persons self-identified as FM patients was conducted among subscribers to

Exploring the mechanisms of yoga-based cardiac rehabilitation in heart failure via assessment of endothelial function, genomics and arterial health (Yoga-EndOmics): a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure (HF) remains a major global health challenge, particularly in low-resource settings where access to comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is limited. Yoga, a culturally contextualised mind-body intervention, holds promise as an adjunctive therapy in CR. The Yoga-EndOmics study aims to evaluate the effects of Yoga-based cardiac rehabilitation (Yoga-CaRe) on gene expression, endothelial function, vascular biomarkers and clinical outcomes in systolic HF, providing mechanistic insights into its potential integration into conventional cardiac rehabilitation. Confirmation of the viability of a metaverse yoga class and investigation into the impact on pain, anxiety, and depression associated with low back pain after engaging in virtual yoga sessions.

This study aimed to explore the influence of metaverse technology (MT) factors like presence, usability, and enjoyment on patients' satisfaction, with a focus on examining potential mediating effects. In addition, it sought to assess whether the yoga practice as an intervention therapy in MT induces changes in the pain, anxiety, and depression levels of patients experiencing back pain. From the pool of 202 participants, this study chose participants who had reported enduring low back pain over 12 weeks, with a visual analogue scale (VAS) rating of 4 or higher. After completing the questionnair

Rehabilitation through yoga: Mental health and the right to dignity in prison.

Prison environments in Latin America are overpopulated, and current policies restrict more interns' rights, which in turn leads to high rates of violence and mental health issues. All this goes against social justice in terms of equal rights, equal opportunity, and equal treatment. Following the trend of a more positive criminology, a yoga program was designed for prisoners in a penitentiary center in Valparaiso, Chile. Results of the program were measured before and after the workshop in terms of mental health and aggression. Despite no significant differences being observed in the analysis,

Transformative journey: A qualitative exploration of the underlying processes of yoga practice.

The practice of yoga has been demonstrated as a positive influence on both physical and psychological health. However, there is still much to be learned about the underlying processes of yoga and how it impacts the lives of practitioners. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct an in-depth exploration of these processes, capturing yoga practitioners' lived experiences. Through an online qualitative survey and reflexive thematic analysis grounded in philosophical constructivism, this research reveals a transformative process experienced by individuals who practice yoga. The results suggest that
