Zeolites are suitable microporous hosts for positively charged organic species, but it is believed that they cannot adsorb organic anions. Pure Meisenheimer complex, derived from reduction of 2,4-dinitroaniline with NaBH4, was adsorbed inside faujasite cavities. Evidence for the internal incorporation of this negatively charged reaction intermediate comes from 1) XPS elemental analysis as a function of the depth of penetration into the particle, 2) the remarkable blue shift in lambda(max) of the Meisenheimer complex adsorbed on zeolite (ca. 470 nm) as compared to that in acetonitrile (580 nm)

Select zeolites with high SiO2/Al2O3 ratios were shown to effectively remove methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), chloroform, and trichloroethylene (TCE) from water. In laboratory studies using batch sorption equilibria, high Si large-port mordenite and ZSM-5 (silicalite) were found to have sorption properties for MTBE and TCE superior to activated carbon. For example, at an equilibrium solution concentration of 100 μg/L, high Si mordenite retained 8-12× more MTBE than either of two powdered activated carbons used as reference sorbents. Sorption results also highlight the importance of pore size an

The adsorption and storage behavior of fluids in nanoporous materials have been widely explored using synthetic porous media with uniform pore structures; however, the potential of naturally occurring zeolites remains underexamined despite their low cost and abundance. This study investigates the adsorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethane (C2H6) in natural zeolites, clinoptilolite and two chabazite variants to elucidate how temperature, adsorbent, and adsorbate properties influence confined phase behavior. The porous structure and surface chemistry of these zeolites are examined using a var

The evolution of active sites in Cu-zeolites for the CH4-to-CH3OH conversion has been investigated during oxidative treatment in O2. Three samples with different frameworks but comparable Cu loadings and Si/Al ratios have been prepared to assess the influence of topology on material oxidizability and the nature of the generated Cu(II) species. Complementary spectroscopic studies highlight that isomeric Cu(II) centers hosted within different topologies are characterized by distinct formation rates. In turn, the framework-specific kinetics of Cu(II) site generation regulate the overall oxidation

Methanol-to-propylene (MTP) is one of the important propylene production technologies that is commonly achieved by the use of zeolite catalysts. However, effectively regulating the selectivity toward propylene remains challenging due to the insufficient understanding of the principles behind selectivity control. In this study, we proposed an interpretable function to assess the propylene/ethylene (P/E) selectivity based on a thorough investigation of the MTP selectivity control mechanism and implemented a machine learning (ML) method for high-throughput screening of zeolite frameworks for MTP.

The stability of perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) plays a vital role in practical devices. Besides silica coating, embedding PQDs in zeolites is another strategy to improve their stability significantly. Although the zeolite rigid framework has been reported to protect PQDs, there are few reports on the in situ synthesis of PQDs in zeolites. In this work, cubic phase CsPbX3 (X = Br, I) nanocrystals were successfully prepared by the ion exchange method combined with a non-polar organic trigger. Dropping a certain amount of ZnM2 (M = Br, I) solution into the intermediate product Cs4PbCl6 nanocryst

Neutron scattering methods observed complete room temperature conversion of methanol to framework methoxy in a commercial sample of methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) catalyst H-ZSM-5, evidenced by methanol immobility and vibrational spectra matched by ab initio calculations. No methoxylation was observed in a commercial HY sample, attributed to the dealumination involved in high silica HY synthesis.

Fe was introduced in mordenite zeolite by means of ion exchange either in solid or in liquid state. The iron loading (50--200 wt%), iron precursor (FeSO4.7H2O and FeCl3), and mordenite starting material (NH4M, HM, and NaM) were varied during the exchange processes. The Fe species were characterized by N2 adsorption measurements as well as by XRD and Mössbauer spectroscopies. The Fe-mordenite samples prepared by liquid-state ion exchange attained remarkable Fe dispersion and surface areas higher than those of the parent. It was found that Fe3+ ions, which substituted the framework Al and accord

Carbonylation is an important process used to produce aldehydes, carboxylic acids and esters1-5 that is usually catalysed by homogeneous metal complexes with ligands and iodide promoters6-12. Koch has reported that protons of mineral acids can also catalyse carbonylation13. Previous studies have demonstrated that Brønsted acidic zeolites can act as a heterogeneous, Koch-type catalyst for carbonylation of alcohols and olefins, but the products in this case are limited to tertiary carboxylic acids14-18. Here we show that targeted use of spatial confinement in a zeolite together with a high CO/ol

Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is widely used for gas purification, and its performance depends strongly on the adsorbent properties and the cycle design. This study presents a protocol for hydrogen purification using a two-bed vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) system with zeolite 5A as the adsorbent. The procedure outlines how breakthrough experiments are conducted to support cycle design and explains the key considerations to ensure reliable operation under non‑isothermal and adiabatic conditions. Both breakthrough and VPSA experiments were performed to evaluate the separation perform

Mesoporous zeolite-anchored atomically dispersed metal (ADM) catalysts are capable of overcoming diffusion limitations, promoting mass transfer, and exposing more active sites. These features make them one of the most ideal heterogeneous catalysts. However, introducing both mesoporosity and ADM species into zeolite structures while avoiding metal clustering remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report the hierarchical MFI zeolite encapsulated atomically dispersed nickel species using a ligand-protected in situ synthesis strategy with a tri-functional template. This template incorporates

Gypseous soils create engineering challenges because of their unpredictable behavior when exposed to moisture. In practice, traditional stabilizers such as cement and lime are widely used but are often costly and less sustainable. This study investigates natural clinoptilolite zeolite as an eco-friendly stabilizer for gypseous soils (10-40% gypsum content) compared to lime. Zeolite was activated by sodium hydroxide (mol/L) and in combination with lime. Stabilizers were applied at 3-10% dosages by dry weight. Mechanical performance (UCS, P-wave velocity) and durability under wetting-drying and

Crystalline microporous zeolites are pivotal materials in the petrochemical industry, catalysis, separation, and energy conversion. Their performance arises from ordered frameworks that govern molecular transport and reactivity, complemented by tunable acidity. Although traditionally regarded as rigid, zeolite frameworks display remarkable structural flexibility under working conditions, a feature often overlooked but crucial for understanding their catalytic activity. Here, we report the direct imaging of nanozeolite flexibility during ethanol conversion using in situ Bragg coherent diffracti

The methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) process provides a sustainable route to light olefins, aromatics, and gasoline-range products with methanol synthesized via syngas platform molecules obtained from nonpetroleum alternative feedstocks, such as coal, biomass, and natural gas. Zeolite-catalyzed MTH reactions inherently exhibit multiscale heterogeneity, which is intrinsically linked to the rational design of high-efficiency industrial catalysts and the regulation of product selectivity. Despite extensive research on zeolite-based MTH catalysis, most studies focused on a single scale and a multisc

Zeolitic octahedral metal oxide is a potentially good catalyst due to its redox property and microporosity. The structure and chemical composition of a material affect its catalytic activity, therefore tuning these properties is very important. Herein, structure tuning of the zeolitic octahedral metal oxide based on vanadotungstate was studied in detail. The investigation into the formation of the material indicated that tungstate reacts with VOSO4 to form [W4O16]8- cubane units, K+ led to the formation of zeolitic vanadotungstate with cubic symmetry (VT-1), and trimethylamine led to the isome

This review provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles, characterization techniques, and recent advances in understanding molecular adsorption and diffusion behaviors within zeolite materials. By examining the distinctive microporous frameworks, tunable pore sizes, and adjustable acid site distributions of zeolites, we highlight how adsorption and diffusion processes critically govern catalytic activity and selectivity. We discuss state-of-the-art experimental approaches alongside multi-scale computational methods, which collectively shed light on the molecular-level trans

In this work, a Fe/HBEA zeolite (Si/Al: 12.5), representing an effective catalyst for the NH3-SCR process, was physico-chemically characterized and investigated regarding the kinetics of the adsorption and desorption of NH3. The sample was evaluated by N2 physisorption, 57Fe Möessbauer and DRUV-Vis spectroscopy, while the kinetics was investigated by temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 (TPD) including different adsorption temperatures. It was shown that the NH3 chemisorption results in weakly and strongly bonded molecular ammonia as well as ammonium species. A kinetic mean field model was

The minimized diffusion limitation and completely exposed strong acid sites of the ultrathin zeolites make it an industrially important catalyst especially for converting bulky molecules. However, the structure-controlled and large-scale synthesis of the material is still a challenge. In this work, the direct synthesis of the single-layer MWW zeolite was demonstrated by using hexamethyleneimine and amphiphilic organosilane as structure-directing agents. Characterization results confirmed the formation of the single-layer MWW zeolite with high crystallinity and excellent thermal/hydrothermal st

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) capable of mobility and manipulation are attractive materials for potential applications in targeted drug delivery, catalysis, and small-scale machines. One way of rendering MOFs navigable is incorporating magnetically responsive nanostructures, which usually involve at least two preparation steps: the growth of the magnetic nanomaterial and its incorporation during the synthesis of the MOF crystals. Now, by using optimal combinations of salts and ligands, zeolitic imidazolate framework composite structures with ferrimagnetic behavior can be readily obtained via
