Cancer in the African population of Harare, Zimbabwe, 1990-1992.

The data presented from the population-based cancer registry in Harare, Zimbabwe, represent the first information on the incidence of cancer in Southern Africa for almost 20 years. In the African population in Zimbabwe there are several features in common with other countries in sub-Saharan Africa: high rates of liver, prostate and cervix cancer, low rates of large-bowel cancer and breast cancer. Also, as reported from southern and south-eastern Africa, there are relatively high incidence rates of cancers of the oesophagus, bladder and (in men) lung. The AIDS epidemic has given rise to a strik

Lymph node pathology in Zimbabwe: a review of 2194 specimens.

When the body's defences are breached by infection, information about such an event is channelled through the lymphatic system to the lymphoid organs in which immune responses occur. The key participants in these responses are lymphocytes, which populate the lymph nodes, spleen, and mucosal lymphoid tissues. Together with other cells, they form an architecture and cell network that enables coordinated function. The lymph nodes, which are usually superficial, are easily accessible and therefore frequently sampled by clinicians. The findings on such samples are invaluable in the diagnosis, stagi

Infections with Babesia canis and Ehrlichia canis in dogs in Zimbabwe.

Of 105 dogs examined at a veterinary hospital in Harare, Zimbabwe, 52 per cent had antibodies reactive with Ehrlichia canis in indirect fluorescent antibody tests, 26 per cent had Babesia canis parasites in peripheral blood smears and 17 per cent had both infections. None of the dogs with serological evidence of ehrlichiosis had typical E canis morulae detectable in blood smears. The infections were regarded as incidental findings not readily related to the reasons for examination in 46 per cent of the dogs with antibodies to E canis and 17 per cent of the dogs with both infections. The most c

Communal farmers and tick control--a field study in Zimbabwe.

Intensive dipping of cattle to control ticks and tick-borne diseases precludes development of endemic stability to the latter. Alternative control strategies have been recommended which reduce the frequency of dipping and permit the expression of tick resistance and endemic stability. However, such strategies imply acceptance by cattle owners of higher tick burdens. In this study the views of a group of communal farmers to tick control are described and the impact of these views upon adoption of other strategies is discussed.

Genital ulcers and transmission of HIV among couples in Zimbabwe.

Seventy-five married men found to be positive for HIV-1 in Harare, Zimbabwe, were interviewed in order to define behaviours associated with acquisition of infection and to determine factors associated with transmission of infection to their wives. The majority of infected men reported sexual intercourse with multiple heterosexual partners and female prostitutes, and gave a history of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). All subjects denied homosexual activity and parenteral drug abuse. Serological testing of the wives of seropositive men showed that 45 (60%) were HIV-antibody-positive. Wives

The effects of war on the control of diseases of livestock in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).

The disruption of veterinary services in the tribal areas of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) during seven years of conflict resulted in serious epidemics of disease. The cessation of dipping was followed by the death of an estimated one million cattle from tick-borne disease. Heavy mortality followed the disruption of control measures for trypanosomiasis. Foot-and-mouth disease and anthrax spread widely in the tribal areas. Rabies, normally restricted to areas bordering Botswana and Mocambique, became widespread. A marked increase in human deaths from anthrax and rabies occurred.

The political economy of tobacco of Zimbabwe: An analysis of stakeholder perspectives.

Tobacco continues to be viewed as a path to economic development by some governments, including Zimbabwe, despite widespread knowledge of tobacco's negative consequences for users, farmers and the environment. Zimbabwe is one of the top five tobacco producers in the world and the largest tobacco producer in the African region. Zimbabwe's focus on tobacco production creates difficulties for the implementation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) which it signed in 2014. Our objective was to understand the political economy of tobacco in Zimbabwe, w

[Comparison of the disease burden of schistosomiasis globally and in China and Zimbabwe].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the trends in the disease burden of schistosomiasis worldwide and in China, and Zimbabwe from 1990 to 2019, so as to provide insights into the formulation of the schistosomiasis control strategy in Zimbabwe. METHODS: Based on Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019) data sources, the age-standardized prevalence, mortality, disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rate of schistosomiasis were compared in the world, China, and Zimbabwe and the trends in the disease burden of schistosomiasis from 1990 to 2019 were investigated using Joinpoint regression analysis. Governing a pandemic: biopower and the COVID-19 response in Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: The extraordinary explosion of state power towards the COVID-19 response has attracted scholarly and policy attention in relation to pandemic politics. This paper relies on Foucault's theoretical differentiation of the political management of epidemics to understand how governmental framing of COVID-19 reflects biopolitical powers and how power was mobilised to control the pandemic in Zimbabwe. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of published literature, cabinet resolutions and statutory instruments related to COVID-19 in Zimbabwe. RESULTS: The COVID-19 response in Zimbabwe

Spatial overlaps in the distribution of HIV/AIDS and malaria in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: In most developing economies particularly in Africa, more people are likely to die of HIV/AIDS and malaria compared to other diseases. HIV/AIDS tends to be superimposed on the long standing malaria burden particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The detection and understanding of spatial overlaps in disease occurrence is important for integrated and targeted disease control. Integrated disease control can enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness through the development of drugs targeting multiple infections in the same geographic space. METHODS: Using Zimbabwe as a case study, this st

A pilot study to delimit tsetse target populations in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse (Glossina sensu stricto) are cyclical vectors of human and animal trypanosomoses, that are presently targeted by the Pan African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC) coordinated by the African Union. In order to achieve effective control of tsetse, there is need to produce elaborate plans to guide intervention programmes. A model intended to aid in the planning of intervention programmes and assist a fuller understanding of tsetse distribution was applied, in a pilot study in the Masoka area, Mid-Zambezi valley in Zimbabwe, and targeting two savannah spec

Exploring structural violence in the context of disability and poverty in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: While it is widely assumed that disability, poverty and health are closely linked, research falls short of fully understanding the link. One approach to analysing the links between disability and poverty is through the concept of structural violence, referring to social structures that contribute to the impoverishment of individuals or communities. These structures can be political, ecological, legal and economic, among others. OBJECTIVE: To explore structural violence and how it affects families of children with cerebral palsy among the Tonga ethnic group living in poor rural com

Community groups as 'critical enablers' of the HIV response in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: The Investment Framework for a more effective HIV response has become integral to discussions on how best to respond to the HIV epidemic. The Framework calls for greater synergy and attention to factors that serve as 'critical enablers' and optimise HIV programmes. In this paper we argue for recognition of informal and indigenous community groups as 'critical enablers' of the HIV response. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in Matobo district of the Matabeleland South province in Zimbabwe. It draws on 19 individual in-depth interviews and 9 focus group discussions condu

Primary cerebral lymphoma in Zimbabwe: a report of three patients.

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is steadily increasing. Immunosuppressed individuals are at particular risk. In AIDS patients a clinical diagnosis of PCNSL is made in 0.5 to 8.4%, and a post mortem diagnosis in up to 11% of cases. In spite of the extensive HIV epidemic in parts of Africa, a literature search revealed only one African report of this condition. The reasons for this apparent infrequency are not clear. Possibilities include under diagnosis or early demise of patients due to other AIDS related illnesses of earlier onset. Three patients with primary cerebral lymphoma

Use of traditional and orthodox health services in urban Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Health care in Zimbabwe is provided by both orthodox and traditional care providers. With formal medical services under economic strain it is important to understand the extent of consulting with traditional care providers and their effectiveness. METHODS: A cross-sectional community survey recorded consultations and self-treatment for episodes of illness among 1251 individuals in 222 households randomly selected in two high-density suburbs of Harare, Zimbabwe. Three dependent variables (illness experience, consultation behaviour and choice of care provider) were analysed against
