Structural and functional responses of plankton to a mixture of four tetracyclines in aquatic microcosms.

Pharmaceuticals are routinely detected at low concentrations in surface waters, but effects on non-target organisms are not well understood. Microcosms were used to assess ecological responses in freshwater ecosystems to a mixture offourtetracyclines commonly used in veterinary and human medicine. Triplicate microcosms were treated with tetracycline, oxytetracycline, doxycycline, and chlortetracycline, resulting in measured time-weighted average total mixture concentrations of 0, 0.080, 0.218, 0.662, and 2.29 microM, respectively. Responses were assessed in terms of structure and function base

Short-term responses of estuarine mesozooplankton to maintenance dredging activities.

Maintenance dredging is a common practice in estuaries to ensure navigability and support port operations, but it also represents a widespread anthropogenic disturbance. Its effects on planktonic communities, however, remain poorly understood, particularly for mesozooplankton, a key component linking primary producers and higher trophic levels. This study evaluated the short-term responses of mesozooplankton communities and environmental variables to a maintenance dredging operation in the Guadalquivir estuary (SW Spain). Sampling was conducted at two sites with contrasting salinity conditions

Deficiency syndromes in top predators associated with large-scale changes in the Baltic Sea ecosystem.

Vitamin B1 (thiamin) deficiency is an issue periodically affecting a wide range of taxa worldwide. In aquatic pelagic systems, thiamin is mainly produced by bacteria and phytoplankton and is transferred to fish and birds via zooplankton, but there is no general consensus on when or why this transfer is disrupted. We focus on the occurrence in salmon (Salmo salar) of a thiamin deficiency syndrome (M74), the incidence of which is highly correlated among populations derived from different spawning rivers. Here, we show that M74 in salmon is associated with certain large-scale abiotic changes in t

Distribution and bioaccumulation of heavy metals in aquatic organisms of different trophic levels and potential health risk assessment from Taihu lake, China.

Aquatic organisms of different trophic levels were taken from Taihu lake. Heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb) were measured in phytoplankton, zooplankton, in two species of zoobenthos, and in eight fish species, as well as in the water column and bottom sediments. Results showed that the concentration of Cu and Zn for all organisms was much higher than for other metals, and Cd was the lowest in all species. Generally, heavy metal concentrations in phytoplankton were higher than in zooplankton. In zoobenthos, the concentration in Bellamya sp.(human edible snail) was higher than that in Corbic

Algal blooms reduce the uptake of toxic methylmercury in freshwater food webs.

Mercury accumulation in fish is a global public health concern, because fish are the primary source of toxic methylmercury to humans. Fish from all lakes do not pose the same level of risk to consumers. One of the most intriguing patterns is that potentially dangerous mercury concentrations can be found in fish from clear, oligotrophic lakes whereas fish from greener, eutrophic lakes often carry less mercury. In this study, we experimentally tested the hypothesis that increasing algal biomass reduces mercury accumulation at higher trophic levels through the dilution of mercury in consumed alga

Mercury concentrations in landlocked Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) from the Canadian Arctic. Part I: insights from trophic relationships in 18 lakes.

Concentrations of mercury (Hg) have increased slowly in landlocked Arctic char over a 10- to 15-year period in the Arctic. Fluxes of Hg to sediments also show increases in most Arctic lakes. Correlation of Hg with trophic level (TL) was used to investigate and compare biomagnification of Hg in food webs from lakes in the Canadian Arctic sampled from 2002 to 2007. Concentrations of Hg (total Hg and methylmercury [MeHg]) in food webs were compared across longitudinal and latitudinal gradients in relation to delta(13)C and delta(15)N in periphyton, zooplankton, benthic invertebrates, and Arctic c

The Evolution of a Specialized, Highly Virulent Fish Pathogen through Gene Loss and Acquisition of Host-Specific Survival Mechanisms.

Photobacterium damselae comprises two subspecies, P. damselae subsp. damselae and P. damselae subsp. piscicida, that contrast remarkably despite their taxonomic relationship. The former is opportunistic and free-living but can cause disease in compromised individuals from a broad diversity of taxa, while the latter is a highly specialized, primary fish pathogen. Here, we employ new closed curated genome assemblies from Australia to estimate the global phylogenetic structure of the species P. damselae. We identify genes responsible for the shift from an opportunist to a host-adapted fish pathog

Ecological impact in ditch mesocosms of simulated spray drift from a crop protection program for potatoes.

Outdoor aquatic ditch mesocosms were treated with a range of pesticides to simulate various spray drift rates resulting from a typical crop protection program used in the cultivation of potatoes in The Netherlands. The main experimental aims of the present study were to provide information on the fate and ecological effects of drift of the pesticides into surface water and to evaluate the effectiveness of drift-reduction measures in mitigating risks. The pesticides selected and the dosage, frequency, and timing of application were based on normal agricultural practices in the potato crop. Appl

Virulent Disease Epidemics Can Increase Host Density by Depressing Foraging of Hosts.

AbstractAll else equal, parasites that harm host fitness should depress densities of their hosts. However, parasites that alter host traits may increase host density via indirect ecological interactions. Here, we show how depression of foraging rate of infected hosts can produce such a hydra effect. Using a foraging assay, we quantified reduced foraging rates of a zooplankton host infected with a virulent fungal parasite. We then parameterized a dynamical model of hosts, parasites, and resources with this foraging function, showing how foraging depression can create a hydra effect. Mathematica

[Effects of temperature and salinity on oxygen consumption rate and asphyxiation point of Sagitta crassa].

A laboratory test was conducted to study the effects of different temperature and salinity on the oxygen consumption rate and asphyxiation point of chaetognath Sagitta crassa. Both temperature and salinity had significant effects on the oxygen consumption rate (IO) and specific oxygen consumption rate (SO) of S. crassa. When the temperature raised from 5 degrees C to 25 degrees C, the IO and SO of S. crassa increased first, and then presented an obvious decreasing trend, with the regression function being y = 0.0058x3-0.2956x2 +4.415x-8.7816 (R2 = 0.99, P < 0.05) for IO and y = 0.0011x3-0.0546

Terrestrial discharges mediate trophic shifts and enhance methylmercury accumulation in estuarine biota.

The input of mercury (Hg) to ecosystems is estimated to have increased two- to fivefold during the industrial era, and Hg accumulates in aquatic biota as neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). Escalating anthropogenic land use and climate change are expected to alter the input rates of terrestrial natural organic matter (NOM) and nutrients to aquatic ecosystems. For example, climate change has been projected to induce 10 to 50% runoff increases for large coastal regions globally. A major knowledge gap is the potential effects on MeHg exposure to biota following these ecosystem changes. We monitored

Calcium-binding site in AA10 LPMO from Vibrio cholerae suggests modulating effects during environmental survival and infection.

Despite major efforts toward its eradication, cholera remains a major health threat and economic burden in many low- and middle-income countries. Between outbreaks, the bacterium responsible for the disease, Vibrio cholerae, survives in aquatic environmental reservoirs, where it commonly forms biofilms, for example, on zooplankton. N-acetyl glucosamine-binding protein A (GbpA) is an adhesin that binds to the chitinaceous surface of zooplankton and breaks its dense crystalline packing thanks to its lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO) activity, which provides V. cholerae with nutrients. Comparative effects of freeze-dried and fresh Chlorella sorokiniana UKM3 and Coelastrella sp. UKM4 on the growth and survival of Daphnia magna.

Hatcheries mainly grow microalgae on-site to produce high-quality live feed for enriching zooplankton in aquaculture systems, predominantly for the larval stages of aquatic species. However, this is often related to high production and maintenance costs. This has driven research into more cost-effective and practical alternatives, such as freeze-dried or paste forms of microalgae. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the potential of two local freshwater microalgae of Chlorella sorokiniana UKM3 and Coelastrella sp. UKM4 as an enrichment diet for zooplankton Daphnia magna. Intergenerational transfer of micro(nano)plastics in different organisms.

Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs), widely distributed in the environment, can be ingested and accumulated by various organisms. Recently, the transgenerational transport of MNPs from parental organisms to their offspring has attracted increasing attention. In this review, we summarize the patterns, specific pathways, and related mechanisms of intergenerational transfer of MNPs in plants, non-mammals (zooplankton and fish) and mammals. The knowledge gaps are also discussed. For plant, MNPs can accumulate in fruits and seeds by intercellular and cellular internalization pathways after uptake by roots o

Bioaccumulation patterns of methyl mercury and essential fatty acids in lacustrine planktonic food webs and fish.

Organisms of the planktonic food web convey essential nutrients as well as contaminants to animals at higher trophic levels. We measured concentrations of methyl mercury (MeHg) and essential fatty acids (EFAs, key nutrients for aquatic food webs) in four size categories of planktonic organisms - seston (10-64 microm), micro-(100-200 microm), meso-(200-500 microm), and macrozooplankton (>500 microm) - as well as total mercury (THg) and EFAs in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in coastal lakes. We demonstrate that, in all lakes during this summer sampling, MeHg concentrations of planktonic or

Mercury in the pelagic food web of Lake Champlain.

Lake Champlain continues to experience mercury contamination resulting in public advisories to limit human consumption of top trophic level fish such as walleye. Prior research suggested that mercury levels in biota could be modified by differences in ecosystem productivity as well as mercury loadings. We investigated relationships between mercury in different trophic levels in Lake Champlain. We measured inorganic and methyl mercury in water, seston, and two size fractions of zooplankton from 13 sites representing a range of nutrient loading conditions and productivity. Biomass varied signifi

Ecological peculiarities of Eurasian inland saline and alkaline soda waters.

Inland permanently alkaline soda waters (ASW) are characterized by the dominance of Na+, HCO3- and/or CO32-, whereas non-permanently alkaline saline waters (SW) are typically dominated by Na+, Cl- and/or SO42- ions. Eurasian ASW and SW constitute unique ecosystems characterized by various ecological peculiarities, where the combination of shallow water depth, intermittent hydrological cycle, high diurnal water temperature fluctuations, high inorganic turbidity, a wide salinity range, alkaline pH, high concentrations of coloured dissolved organic carbon, and hypertrophic conditions creates comp

Evaluating the combined effects of harmful algal blooms and low pH exposure on the development and hatching success of Artemia salina.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) and ocean acidification are major stressors in coastal marine ecosystems, yet their combined effects on early zooplankton development remain poorly understood. This study tested whether HABs and low pH exposure exert synergistic effects on the embryonic development and hatching success of brine shrimp (Artemia salina) cysts. Cysts were exposed to controls, toxin-producing HAB species (i.e. Margalefidinium polykrikoides or Alexandrium catenella), or a non-toxin producing HAB control (i.e. Gymnodinium aureolum) and at either ambient (pH ∼ 8) or acidified (pH ∼ 7.2) co

Biotechnological approaches for suppressing Microcystis blooms: insights and challenges.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms, particularly those dominated by Microcystis, pose significant ecological and health risks worldwide. This review provides an overview of the latest advances in biotechnological approaches for mitigating Microcystis blooms, focusing on cyanobactericidal bacteria, fungi, eukaryotic microalgae, zooplankton, aquatic plants, and cyanophages. Recently, promising results have been obtained using cyanobactericidal bacteria: not through the inoculation of cultured bacteria, but rather by nurturing those already present in the periphyton or biofilms of aquatic plants

Factors affecting enhanced mercury bioaccumulation in inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park, USA.

We investigated factors causing mercury (Hg) concentrations in northern pike to exceed the consumption advisory level (>500 ng/g) in some inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park. Using Hg-clean techniques, we collected water, zooplankton, macro invertebrates, and fishes in 1998 and 1999 from one advisory lake, Sargent Lake, for analysis of total mercury (Hg(T)) and methylmercury (MeHg). For comparison, samples were also collected from a non-advisory lake, Lake Richie. Concentrations of Hg(T) in northern pike were significantly higher in Sargent Lake (P<0.01). Counter to expectations, mean co
