The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the YOLOv8 deep learning model for detecting zygomatic fractures. Computed tomography scans with zygomatic fractures were collected, with all slices annotated to identify fracture lines across seven categories: zygomaticomaxillary suture, zygomatic arch, zygomaticofrontal suture, sphenozygomatic suture, orbital floor, zygomatic body, and maxillary sinus wall. The images were divided into training, validation, and test datasets in a 6:2:2 ratio. Performance metrics were calculated for each category. A total of 13,988 axial and 14,107 coro

Numerous techniques have been reported for the reduction of zygomatic arch fractures. In this article, we aimed to describe a technique we named as "roller coaster maneuver via lateral orbital approach" to closed reduction of the isolated-type zygomatic arch fractures. Surgical outcomes of 14 patients treated with this method were outlined.

Handheld point-of-care ultrasound (HPOCUS) is a rapidly growing technology with an expanding range of medical applications. A new method to compare two-dimensional (2D) HPOCUS accuracy with three-dimensional (3D) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was devised. Ten patients who had completed long-term follow up after surgical intervention to correct displaced zygomatic arch (ZA) fractures were included. The outer cortical outline of the 2D ZA was identified using HPOCUS and superimposed on to a 3D CBCT segmentation. A pointwise analysis of 100 discrete paired points was used to calculate the

Zygomatic complex (ZMC) fractures are among the most common craniofacial injuries, impacting both function and esthetics. This study evaluates the effectiveness of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in restoring facial symmetry following ZMC fractures. Sixteen patients with unilateral ZMC fractures underwent a retrospective analysis comparing preoperative and postoperative computed tomography (CT) scans to a control group of ten individuals without facial fractures. Quantitative metrics, including root mean square distance (RMSD) and heatmap analysis, were used alongside a qualitative

OBJECTIVE: To establish an automatic reduction method for unilateral zygomatic fractures based on Iterative Closes Point (ICP) algorithm.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 60 patients with unilateral type B zygomatic fractures were included. After acquiring CT images, zygomatic fragments were segmented using self-developed software MICSys. Mid-Sagittal-Plane (MSP) was manually defined using anatomical skull landmarks. Surface of zygoma on the healthy side was then "mirrored" according to MSP. Referring to mirror image, the fragments were reduced by both automatic and manual methods. In automatic group, f

INTRODUCTION: The zygomaticomaxillary complex is very vulnerable to injury because of its intrinsically prominent convexity. There are 2 different surgical approaches for the therapy of these fractures: closed reduction and open reduction. In the open reduction 2 or 3 fixation points with related incisions are usually necessary in dislocated fractures: osteosynthesis must be performed starting from zygomaticofrontal suture when dislocated at this site, followed by zygomatic body fixation on the anterior sinus wall, anterior orbital floor margin fixation, and finally orbital floor reconstructio

INTRODUCTION: Zygomatic fractures form a major entity in craniomaxillofacial traumatology. Few studies have dealt with biomechanical basics and none with the role of the facial soft tissues. Therefore this study should investigate, whether facial soft tissue plays a protecting role in lateral midfacial trauma.
METHODS: A head-to-head encounter was simulated by way of finite element analysis. In two scenarios this impact - with and without soft tissues - was investigated to demonstrate the potential protective effects. To achieve realism, a transient simulation was chosen, which considers temp

Tripod displaced zygomatic fractures are generally treated with rigid internal fixation at the intraorbital rim (IOR), frontozygomatic (FZ) suture, and zygomaticomaxillary buttress. Intraorbital rim fixation is associated with complaints of poor esthetic results and miniplate intolerance. Although different solutions were previously reported as 2-point fixation or resorbable fixation at the IOR, a 3-point fixation is considered the best choice for maintaining an optimal zygomatic stability after reduction. Consequently, the best goal is to perform a surgical technique that provides a 3-point f

Fractures of the zygomatic-orbito-maxillary complex (ZOM) are among the most frequent in maxillo-facial surgery. The study evaluates treatment for this type of fracture in the long-term and the sequelae linked to it. Patients who had been operated between february 1998 and november 1999 to reduce and retain ZOM fractures were subjected to check-up examination at the Maxillo-Facial Surgery Operative Unit, Florence. Cases selected had been operated via trans-oral access with incision of the superior vestibular fornix and where necessary with application of means of retention (Foley balloon and/o

Fractures of the pediatric zygoma are uncommon and are often associated with high-impact trauma, as evidenced by the relatively increased prevalence of concomitant injuries observed in these patients. Despite advances in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of pediatric craniofacial injuries, data regarding zygomatic fractures in children remain poorly established. The diagnosis of zygomatic disruption is more difficult in children and requires the maintenance of a high index of suspicion on behalf of the surgeon. Early recognition and implementation of appropriate therapy are critical an

Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures are among the most common midfacial injuries, but achieving accurate reduction is challenging due to the complex anatomy and limited intraoperative visualisation. Traditional intraoperative assessment is subjective and often leads to residual asymmetry, prompting the use of computed tomography (CT), cone-beam CT (CBCT) and C-arm fluoroscopy to improve surgical accuracy and outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and the Cochrane Library were searched until June 2025. Stu

BACKGROUND: Zygomatic complex fractures are prevalent among maxillofacial bone injuries due to the prominence of the zygomatic arch, which can significantly impact facial aesthetics and the ability to open the mouth. Although non-surgical interventions are available for mild cases, severe fractures necessitate surgical intervention. The surgical repair of zygomatic arch fractures poses a risk of injuring the temporal branch of the facial nerve (TBFN). This study aimed to develop a modern modification to reduce the probability of common complications.
METHOD: We conducted a retrospective study

The zygomaticomaxillary complex is integral to facial aesthetics and is frequently involved in facial fractures. These injuries often necessitate surgical intervention, with open reduction and internal fixation being the standard treatment. This article presents a novel philosophy for managing zygomatic fractures, emphasizing the "Scarless Surgery" technique. The authors' approach prioritizes minimal osteosynthesis material and fixation points while utilizing the least visible surgical access. For isolated zygomatic arch fractures, an intraoral technique is preferred, whereas the frontozygomat

The zygoma is located in the medial and lateral parts of the face, supporting the midfacial contour. The forward projection of the zygoma and the zygomatic arch often expose them to injury. Fractures of the zygoma can lead to the displacement of the zygoma and the zygomatic arch, causing facial collapse deformity. For delayed zygomatic fractures, the loss of normal anatomical landmarks caused by the malunion of the fracture lines and remodelling of the bony contour makes it difficult to determine the correct positions of the zygomatic bones. In such cases, ideal and steady outcomes with satisf

Existing treatment methods of zygomatic complex fractures, which are complicated by contrac- ture of the masseter as a result of displaced bone fragments, have to be improved. Lack of muscle relaxation leads to the formation of local hypertonicity. In spasmodic muscle fibers varies perfusion and hypoxia occurs, which is accompanied by the release of inflammatory mediators and activation of pain receptors. Over time, areas formed local hypertonicity specific trigger points that contain multiple sensory loci and include one or more sensitive nerve endings. A device for the effective electromyogr
