BACKGROUND: The role of p53 expression in human neoplasms is still controversial, and it has been associated with both favorable and unfavorable outcome of the patients. Also cytoplasmic expression of p53 protein has been reported to affect survival in some cancers. Furthermore, an association between p53 and beta-catenin expression has been demonstrated. We studied the expression of p53 in a large group of oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas and its relation to catenin expression, histologic differentiation, clinical data, and prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma using serological markers with better sensitivity and specificity than alpha fetoprotein (AFP) is needed.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of serum sICAM-1, β-catenin, IL-8, proteasome and sTNFR-II in early detection of HCC.

PURPOSE: Epithelial ovarian cancer has no reliable marker for early detection and no known specific premalignant changes. Human ovarian surface epithelial (HOSE) cells expressing human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) E6/E7 genes undergo crisis, and surviving cells exhibit an immortalized phenotype. Cells show an increasingly invasive phenotype on collagen rafts over time. To ascertain the nature of this aberrant growth, we characterized this spontaneous progression of HOSE cells from a benign to an invasive phenotype using histopathology, immunophenotyping, and tumorigenesis assays.

PURPOSE: We present preliminary clinical, histochemical and molecular findings for 5 patients with micropapillary transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, a rare histological variant not widely recognized in the urological literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 5 patients were prospectively identified. In 3 cases immunohistochemical staining for expression of CD31, p53, E-cadherin, and alpha, beta and gamma-catenin was performed on paraffin embedded tissue. Sequencing was used to identify point mutations in exons 5 to 9 of p53, and exons 1 and 2 of H-ras.

Endothelial barrier dysfunction is involved in a variety of diseased states.
