Double-loop suture repair for acute acromioclavicular joint disruption.

BACKGROUND: Although it has been established that surgical treatment for acromioclavicular joint disruption (types IV-VI and type III in overhead throwing athletes and heavy laborers) is preferred, the literature is inconclusive about the best type of surgery. PURPOSE: With the goal of avoiding the potential complications of hardware use, the authors present a coracoclavicular functional stabilization technique with the intention to restore the anteroposterior and superior displacement of the clavicle. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: From 1999 to 2003, 38 patients

Transient characteristics of body sway during single-leg stance in athletes with a history of ankle sprain.

BACKGROUND: The role of the measurements of postural stability in the context of screening for ankle sprain risk is still equivocal. Transient characteristics of body sway have been suggested as an alternative or an improvement to traditional whole-trial analyses. RESEARCH QUESTION: Are transient characteristics of body sway sensitive to the history of ankle sprain?. METHODS: The assessment of 30-s single-leg body sway was performed on a group of 93 athletes from basketball, soccer, tennis and running who reported at least 1 ankle sprain in the last 12 months, while a group of 244 athletes f

A repositioning technique for nasal fracture using the little finger.

A nasal bone fracture is usually repositioned using either Walsham or Asch forceps. However, accurate repositioning is often difficult. We therefore performed a repositioning technique using the little finger in 10 patients with a new nasal fracture. The results were satisfactory in all of the patients. Although medical experts may consider our method to be primitive, we believe that our method is both safe and effective, because the operator can recognize both the fractured part and its actual condition using the little finger. With this method, the occurrence of unnecessary new fractures can

Does the Spraino low-friction shoe patch prevent lateral ankle sprain injury in indoor sports? A pilot randomised controlled trial with 510 participants with previous ankle injuries.

BACKGROUND: Lateral ankle sprains are common in indoor sports. High shoe-surface friction is considered a risk factor for non-contact lateral ankle sprains. Spraino is a novel low-friction patch that can be attached to the outside of sports shoes to minimise friction at the lateral edge, which could mitigate the risk of such injury. We aimed to determine preliminary effectiveness (incidence rate and severity) and safety (harms) of Spraino to prevent lateral ankle sprains among indoor sport athletes. METHODS: In this exploratory, parallel-group, two-arm pilot randomised controlled trial, 510 s

Multiple risk factors related to familial predisposition to anterior cruciate ligament injury: fraternal twin sisters with anterior cruciate ligament ruptures.

OBJECTIVE: A multifactorial combination of predictors may increase anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk in athletes. The objective of this twin study was to examine these risk factors to identify commonalities in risk factors that predisposed female fraternal twins to ACL injury. METHODS: Female twins in high-risk sports were prospectively measured prior to an injury for neuromuscular control using three-dimensional motion analysis during landing, hamstrings and quadriceps muscular strength on a dynamometer and joint laxity using a modified Beighton-Horan index and a Compu-KT arthrome

Stress fractures of the sacrum. An atypical cause of low back pain in the female athlete.

Low back pain is a common finding in an athletically active premenopausal female population. We describe an unusual cause of persistent low back/sacroiliac pain: a fatigue-type sacral stress fracture. Plain radiographs, bone scans, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging studies were obtained in the female athletes to determine the nature of the pathologic abnormality. The most significant risk factor for fatigue-type sacral stress fractures was an increase in impact activity due to a more vigorous exercise program. Potential risk factors such as abnormal menstrual history, dietary

Research note: approach rather than avoidance: behavioral responses of broiler chicks repeatedly exposed to an autonomous mobile robot.

Previous experience shapes animal behavior, and repeated exposure to non-aversive stimuli can reduce responses to subsequent challenges. Autonomous robots that navigate commercial broiler houses are being developed for environmental monitoring and have been shown to increase bird locomotion during their passage. However, whether this increased activity primarily reflects displacement or fear-induced avoidance, and how robot exposure influences behavioral responses, remains unclear. We assessed behavioral responses of broilers repeatedly exposed to the AviSense robot (Appelie Robotics) compared

Perception of Pain and Function Among Athletes and Parents: A PROMIS Dyad Study.

BACKGROUND: Athletes can be profoundly impacted by their environment and support system. For young, injured athletes, parents may wield significant influence over their treatment and recovery, yet may hold divergent perceptions of the athletes' condition. HYPOTHESIS: When using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) metrics, parents and athletes will have differing perceptions about how the athletes are affected by their injury. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: This study was approved by our institutional review board. In our clinics,

Effects of combined balance and plyometric training on athletic performance: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Plyometric training is an effective method for improving explosive power, while balance training plays a pivotal role in enhancing agility and dynamic stability. Recently, combined balance and plyometric training (hereafter referred to as combined training) has gained increasing attention. This approach integrates plyometric exercises with separate balance training components. However, whether combined training offers superior benefits over single-mode training remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of combined training on athletic perform

First Rib Stress Fracture Masquerading as Periscapular Muscle Strain in a 10-Year-Old Softball Player.

INTRODUCTION: First rib stress fractures are uncommon but should be considered in overhead and batting athletes who present with posterior shoulder or periscapular pain. Diagnosis may be delayed because symptoms often resemble periscapular muscle strain, and routine shoulder radiographs may not adequately show the first rib. CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old female softball and basketball player presented with acute right posterior shoulder pain after feeling a "pop" during a batting session. She had recently added upper body conditioning, including ring pull-ups and push-ups, to her training routin

Lower limb muscle synergies during deceleration at different change of direction angles.

Change of direction is a core technical action in many competitive sports such as football and basketball, and it plays a crucial role in athletes' performance. Deceleration, which is the foundation of changing direction, has been proven to be a key element in athletes' rapid directional changes . This study collected electromyographic signals during the deceleration phase of a [Formula: see text] left change of direction in 16 male college football players, and analyzed their muscle synergies using non-negative matrix factorization to extract key indicators such as the number of synergy modul

Agreement and Sensitivity of the Acceleration-Velocity Profile Derived via Local Positioning System.

Sprint performance is commonly assessed via discrete sprint tests and analyzed through kinematic estimates modeled using a mono-exponential equation, including estimated maximal sprinting speed (MSS), relative acceleration (TAU), maximum acceleration (MAC), and relative propulsive maximal power (PMAX). The acceleration-velocity profile (AVP) provides a simple summary of short sprint performance using two parameters: MSS and MAC, which are useful for simplifying descriptions of sprint performance, comparison between athletes and groups of athletes, and estimating changes in performance over tim

Risk of Acute Compartment Syndrome in Pediatric Patients With Tibial Tubercle Avulsion Fractures: A Retrospective Review.

OBJECTIVE: Tibial tubercle avulsion fractures (TTAFs) represent 0.4% to 2.7% of pediatric physeal injuries. These injuries are thought to confer a risk of acute compartment syndrome (ACS), and these patients are often admitted for compartment monitoring and, in many cases, undergo prophylactic fasciotomy. This study sought to review our institution's experience with TTAF and associated compartment syndrome in pediatric patients. METHODS: All patients aged 8 to 18 years with TTAF at our institution from January 1, 2017 to January 1, 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Patient demographics, inj

Contribution of ankle motion pattern during landing to reduce the knee-related injury risk.

BACKGROUND: Single-leg landing (SL) is an essential technique in sports such as basketball, soccer, and volleyball, which is often associated with a high risk of knee-related injury. The ankle motion pattern plays a crucial role in absorbing the load shocks during SL, but the effect on the knee joint is not yet clear. This work aims to explore the effects of different ankle plantarflexion angles during SL on the risk of knee-related injury. METHODS: Thirty healthy male subjects were recruited to perform SL biomechanics tests, and one standard subject was selected to develop the finite element
