Two insecticides, fipronil and imidacloprid, were evaluated for efficacy and longevity against Oropsylla montana (Baker), the most important vector of plague in California. Wild-caught California ground squirrels, Spermophilus beecheyi (Richardson), were individually housed in the laboratory to serve as natural hosts to O. montana and for on-animal insecticide trials. Several concentrations oftechnical grade fipronil and imidacloprid in acetone were applied to samples of clean rodent bedding to determine residual activity and longevity against fleas. Immature and adult cat fleas, Ctenocephalid

The prevalence of Sarcocystis in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (O. hemionus) in South Dakota was determined through microscopic examination of tongue samples. The percentage of Sarcocystis infection for both species of deer was determined for prairies east of the Missouri River, west of the Missouri River, and Black Hills of western South Dakota. Sixteen percent (N = 62) of the white-tailed deer tongues from East River, 69% (N = 42) from West River, and 74% (N = 23) from the Black Hills were infected. Prevalence for mule deer was 88% (N = 24), 78% (N = 63), and 75% (

Ticks are known vectors of pathogens affecting animals and humans globally. However, there are gaps in knowledge regarding the diversity of ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) affecting wildlife in South Africa. This study aimed to determine the occurrence, diversity, and distribution of ticks and TBPs in cheetahs and lions from different localities in South Africa using morphological and molecular techniques. Thirty-three blood samples and 94 ticks were opportunistically collected from 30 cheetahs and four lions in 12 conservation facilities. DNA was extracted from 88 ticks and 33 blood sam

Cytauxzoon banethi is one of the least characterized members of the genus Cytauxzoon and has so far been reported only from two European wildcats (Felis silvestris) in Romania. Consequently, its host range and geographic distribution remain poorly understood. In the present study, we molecularly characterized a Cytauxzoon isolate detected in a free-ranging striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) from western Iran. Genomic DNA extracted from blood was analyzed by PCR amplification and sequencing of partial 18S rRNA and mitochondrial cytochrome b (cytb) genes. The 18S rRNA sequence was identical to publis

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the presence, prevalence, and molecular characteristics of Hepatozoon spp. infection in domestic cats living in Aydın and İzmir provinces, located on the Aegean coast of Türkiye. The study specifically focuses on species identification and genotype distribution.
METHODS: A total of 203 blood samples from domestic cats were analyzed for Hepatozoon spp. using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Among the 67 PCR-positive samples, 10 (five for each province) were selected for sequencing, and bidirectional Sanger sequencing was performed. The obtaine

BACKGROUND: The domestic cat, Felis catus, is a popular worldwide pet but is prone to many genetic diseases in both purebred and random-bred cats. Many of these genetic diseases can serve as important feline models of cognate human diseases. To help understand the fundamental basis of some of these diseases and because healthy tissue sequence is difficult to obtain, we provide a resource of transcriptome sequences from thirteen healthy feline tissue types (adipose, brain cortex, hip joint capsule, cardiac, renal cortex, renal medulla, ileum, jejunum, liver, pancreas, round ligament of the femo

BACKGROUND: Feline Bowenoid in situ carcinoma (BISC) is frequently associated with Felis catus papillomavirus-2 (FcaPV-2). Although surgical excision of BISC is expected to be curative, recurrent lesions are reported and it is not known whether it is a consequence of incomplete surgery or residual viral load.
OBJECTIVES: To combine colorimetric in situ hybridisation (CISH) and quantitative (q)PCR for the detection of viral DNA, and to correlate the clinical outcome of cats with BISC in which FcaPV-2 DNA is detected at surgical margins.
ANIMALS: Twenty-seven cats with a histopathological diag

Tick-borne pathogens in the genus Rickettsia are the causative agents of severe and potentially fatal spotted fever group (SFG) and typhus group diseases in dogs and humans. Climate, habitat, and land-use changes are impacting vector ranges, with expansions potentially resulting in novel pathogens being introduced into naïve locations. Despite the public health importance of SFG Rickettsia, there are relatively few data on the prevalence and diversity of rickettsial pathogens in sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this study was to characterize the SFG Rickettsia prevalence and diversity in ixodid

Due to their close associations with humans, dogs and cats can be important reservoirs for zoonotic pathogens. In the current study 200 fecal samples of dogs (n = 70 samples) and cats (n = 130 samples) from animal shelters in Carinthia, southern Austria, were examined for the presence of parasites (fecal flotation and larval migration assay) and selected bacteria. Overall, 17.1% of the canine and 38.5% of the feline samples were positive for parasites (p < 0.001), most commonly Giardia duodenalis (dogs and cats), including potentially zoonotic genotypes revealed by multilocus genotyping, and T

In addition to Helicobacter pylori, many non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacters (NHPH) are able to cause gastric disease in humans. Cats are a natural reservoir for many of these species. Accordingly, living in close and intimate contact with animals has been identified as a risk factor, and an important zoonotic significance has therefore been attributed to NHPH. To determine the prevalence and associated gastric histopathological changes of Helicobacter species, the gastric mucosa of 71 cats were evaluated. Only four presented normal histopathological mucosa with the absence of spiral-shaped

Hepatozoon spp., Babesia spp. and Leishmania infantum are common parasites of dogs in Mediterranean countries and are less frequent in cats, particularly Babesia spp. and L. infantum. Moreover, there is limited information on coinfections between these parasites and on L. infantum's distribution in blood, skin and lymphoid tissue in cats. We used PCR and DNA sequencing to investigate the prevalence of these parasites and the aetiology of Hepatozoon spp. and Babesia spp., in blood, skin, spleen and lymph node samples from up to 212 stray cats and 82 abandoned dogs in southeast Spain. All except

Little information is available on the relationship between the spatial distribution of zoonotic parasites in soil and the pattern of hosts' faeces deposition at a local scale. In this study, the spatial distribution of soil contaminated by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii was investigated in relation to the distribution and use of the defecation sites of its definitive host, the domestic cat (Felis catus). The study was conducted on six dairy farms with a high number of cats (seven to 30 cats). During regular visits to the farms over a 10month period, the cat population and cat defecation sites

Canine and feline upper respiratory tract (URT) infection due to Aspergillus spp. is considered an emerging disease, with the number of reported cases continuing to rise in Japan. Aspergillus fumigatus has been the most frequently reported etiologic agent of sino-orbital aspergillosis in dogs and cats; the other Aspergillus species, Aspergillus felis, Aspergillus fischeri, Aspergillus udagawae, Aspergillus viridinutans, and A. fumigatus, have also been implicated in feline cases. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of antifungal drugs are elevated for these cryptic species compared wi

INTRODUCTION: Globally Cryptosporidium and Giardia species are the most common non-bacterial causes of diarrhoea in children and HIV infected individuals, yet data on their role in paediatric diarrhoea in Kenya remains scant. This study investigated the occurrence of Cryptosporidium species, genotypes and subtypes in children, both hospitalized and living in an informal settlement in Nairobi.
METHODS: This was a prospective cross-sectional study in which faecal specimen positive for Cryptosporidium spp. by microscopy from HIV infected and uninfected children aged five years and below presenti

Disease is often considered a key threat to species of conservation significance. For some, it has resulted in localised extinctions and declines in range and abundance. However, for some species, the assertion that a disease poses a significant threat of extinction is based solely on correlative or anecdotal evidence, often inferred from individual clinical case reports. While a species' susceptibility to a disease may be demonstrated in a number of individuals, investigations rarely extend to measuring the impact of disease at the population level and its contribution, if any, to population

Mycoplasma species are common inhabitants of the feline oral cavity, and so likely contaminate many cat bite abscesses. The objectives of this study were to determine whether Mycoplasma species are common contaminants of cat bite abscesses and whether they are are associated with β-lactam-resistant clinical disease. Twenty-six privately owned cats with clinical evidence of an abscess suspected to be from a cat bite were included in the study. Samples from each cat were evaluated by aerobic and anaerobic culture, as well as Mycoplasma species culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All cat

The cat (Felis silvestris catus) shows significant variation in pelage, morphological, and behavioral phenotypes amongst its over 40 domesticated breeds. The majority of the breed specific phenotypic presentations originated through artificial selection, especially on desired novel phenotypic characteristics that arose only a few hundred years ago. Variations in coat texture and color of hair often delineate breeds amongst domestic animals. Although the genetic basis of several feline coat colors and hair lengths are characterized, less is known about the genes influencing variation in coat gr

Many nondomestic felids are highly endangered, and captive breeding programs have become essential components of holistic conservation efforts for these species. The ability to diagnose pregnancy early in gestation is fundamental to developing effective breeding programs. The purpose of this study was to develop a radioimmunoassay (RIA) for the detection of urinary relaxin in felids and assess its applicability for early, noninvasive pregnancy diagnosis in domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) and leopards (Panthera pardus). Urine was collected from pregnant and nonpregnant domestic cats and

BACKGROUND: A small proportion of patients suffering from chronic active gastritis are diagnosed with gastric Helicobacter species other than Helicobacter pylori. Circumstantial evidence has suggested that these bacteria, also referred to as "Helicobacter heilmannii"-like organisms (HHLO), may be transmitted through animals. The isolation of a Helicobacter bizzozeronii strain from a human patient confirmed this hypothesis. It was the aim of the present study to assess the presence of animal Helicobacter species and H. pylori in humans infected with HHLO, as diagnosed by histology.

Evidence of spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae was obtained from flea pools and individual ticks collected at three sites in northwestern Peru within the focus of an outbreak of febrile disease in humans attributed, in part, to SFG rickettsia infections. Molecular identification of the etiologic agents from these samples was determined after partial sequencing of the 17-kDa common antigen gene (htrA) as well as pairwise nucleotide sequence homology with one or more of the following genes: gltA, ompA, and ompB. Amplification and sequencing of portions of the htrA and ompA genes in pooled sam
