A case of localization in the bowel of congenital fibrosarcoma (a rare soft-tissue tumor usually occurring in the extremities) causing intestinal obstruction in a newborn girl is described. A focal thickening of the ileal wall with features mimicking intussusception was identified at sonography; the final diagnosis was achieved by means of molecular analysis after surgical removal of the mass.

A case of bilateral ovarian enlargement secondary to massive ovarian oedema with underlying intra-abdominal and pelvic fibromatosis is presented. Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and hysterectomy led to rapid progression of the intra-abdominal and pelvic fibromatosis, which was previously unsuspected. The case highlights the importance of recognizing massive oedema of the ovary as a distinct entity as it is a benign condition affecting young females and can be confused with ovarian neoplasm. Gastrointestinal (GI) stromal tumors (GISTs), the specific KIT- or PDFGRA-signaling driven mesenchymal tumors, are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the GI tract. This study analyzed 1091 tumors originally classified as smooth muscle tumors of the small intestine (including jejunum or ileum and excluding duodenum), and found that 906 (83%) of these were GISTs. This case report described the perioperative management of a patient undergoing laparotomy for ileal carcinoid tumor with liver metastases and preoperative carcinoid syndrome. During surgery, bispectral index monitoring, combined with classical blood pressure and heart rate, allowed to discriminate hypertension related to the carcinoid syndrome, from hypertension reflecting an inadequate level of anaesthesia. Consequently, adequate treatment by a somastotatin analogue could be early administered.

BACKGROUND: The benefit of adjuvant therapy for resected small bowel adenocarcinoma has not been proven. We undertook a retrospective analysis to evaluate the benefit of adjuvant therapy in a clearly defined patient population with curatively resected small bowel adenocarcinoma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We identified 54 patients with small bowel adenocarcinoma who underwent margin-negative surgical resection and were evaluated after surgery at the University of Texas, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center between 1990 and 2008. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated.

Herein we report a rare case of a pituitary metastasis from a neuroendocrine tumour mimicking an adenoma. Moreover, starting from this unusual case, the relevant literature concerning the diagnosis and management of patients with metastasis at pituitary level is reviewed. A 51-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with tonsillar swelling. After tonsillectomy was performed, she was diagnosed as having CD56-positive T-cell lymphoma, mainly composed of small and medium-sized atypical cells.
