Environmental surveillance: harnessing environmental sample data to protect animal health.

Infectious diseases in domestic animals-including those with zoonotic potential-impose a substantial global burden on food security, livelihoods, and public health. Environmental surveillance (ES) offers a critical complement to conventional animal-level diagnostics by detecting pathogens or their genetic signatures directly in the matrices through which they persist and spread: water, soil, air, manure, fomites, and arthropod vectors. This review synthesizes evidence across three analytical dimensions-matrix suitability, detection method performance, and wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE)-fo

Effects of seed priming and organic nutrient management on germination and emergence of common bean.

Seed priming and organic nutrient management are widely recognized strategies for improving seed germination and early seedling establishment; however, their combined effects on seed physiological quality in common bean remain insufficiently understood, particularly under controlled production systems. This study evaluated the effects of five fertilizer regimes (Control, Chemical, Organo-mineral, Cattle Manure, and Vermicompost) and eight seed-priming treatments (No priming, Hydropriming, Vermipriming, Cow Urine Priming, and their accelerated aging combinations) on germination and emergence pe

Red mud mitigates NH3 and greenhouse gas emissions during composting: functional gene and microbial community regulation.

The composting of agricultural wastes is accompanied by NH3 and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Red mud, as a novel amendment, has been shown to accelerate humification of composting materials; however, its mechanisms of influencing NH3 and GHG emissions during composting remain unclear. This study investigated how the addition of 5% (w/w) red mud mitigated GHG and NH3 emissions during composting. The results showed that red mud addition effectively mitigated NH3 and GHG emissions during straw and horse manure co-composting, reducing NH3, CO2, and N2O emissions by 7.34%, 25.20%, and 28.90% com

[Nitrate Sources and Key Transformation of River Water in a Piedmont Agricultural Area].

Water nitrate (NO3-) pollution is a pressing global environmental issue. Accurately identifying the diverse sources and quantifying the proportional contributions of NO3- in surface river water remains challenging, especially under complex hydrogeological conditions. This study investigated the surface river water in a typical piedmont agricultural area by integrating hydrochemistry, multiple isotopes (δ2H-H2O, δ18O-H2O, δ18O-NO3-, and δ15N-NO3-), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), in combination with two quantitative models (i.e., Bayesian stable isotope mixing, MixSIAR; positive matrix fact

Biochar modulates microbial carbon metabolism to mitigate global warming potential during composting.

Carbon loss via CO2 and CH4 emissions reduces the organic carbon available for humification, which may negatively affect compost quality while exacerbating environmental pollution. Herein, this study investigated the impacts of biochar (e.g., rice husk biochar (RHB) and sawdust biochar (SDB) as composting additives on CO2 and CH4 emissions, as well as the underlying microbial mechanisms. The results demonstrated that, comparing to the control (CK), RHB and SDB reduced cumulative CO2 emissions by 11.38% and 16.30%, respectively (both P < 0.05), whereas they increased CH4 emissions by 45.35% (P

Synergistic adsorption of NH3 and H2S over layered hydrochar-derived pyrochars: mechanistic divergence and cooperative acid-base activation.

NH₃ and H₂S are major hazardous odorants emitted from intensive livestock operations, presenting distinct challenges for simultaneous removal. This study evaluates a novel layered filtration system utilizing swine-manure-derived pyrochars produced via a two-stage hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and pyrolysis process. Chars produced at 350 °C (PMB350) and 550 °C (PMB550) exhibited divergent physicochemical properties. Increasing pyrolysis temperature increased BET surface area (27.94 to 90.00 m2 g− 1) and alkalinity (pH 8.59 to 9.80), while reducing oxygenated surface functionalities. In singl

Soil degradation toxicity potential (DT50) of VPs followed by biodegradability and leaching: Exploration of possible aquatic and terrestrial component toxicity through QSAR, q-RASAR, and comprehensive screening.

Environmental monitoring has revealed the presence of Veterinary Pharmaceuticals (VPs) in surface waters, groundwater, manure, soils and treated drinking water. The soil degradation half-life (DT50) is a key indication for assessing chemical risks. To address this issue, we developed robust in silico soil degradation prediction models that included QSAR and q-RASAR. A curated dataset of 94 VPs with experimentally determined "typical" DT50 values was used to calculate 0D-2D physicochemical descriptors (PaDEL), as well as similarity-based descriptors. Model development employed GA-MLR in QSARINS

Optimizing carbon and nitrogen cycles towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in agrifood systems: a case study in Quzhou, China.

Agrifood systems emit substantial amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere, but simultaneously sequester carbon (C) originating from atmospheric CO2 in soils. Their net effects on the GHG balance are rarely documented. This study aimed to quantify C cycles and GHG emissions in agrifood systems at both village and county levels and explore the potential to transition towards net-zero emissions. We integrated a modified material and nutrient flow model (NUFER) and a soil C cycle model (RothC) to calculate C cycles in the case area of Quzhou, China. Results showed that net photosynth

Assessing ammonium pollution and mitigation measures through a modified watershed non-point source model.

Watershed water quality modeling is a valuable tool for managing ammonium (NH4+) pollution. However, simulating NH4+ pollution presents unique challenges due to the inherent instability of NH4+ in natural environment. This study modified the widely-used Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to simulate non-point source (NPS) NH4+ processes, specifically incorporating the simulation of land-to-water NH4+ delivery. The Jiulong River Watershed (JRW) is the study area, a coastal watershed in Southeast China with substantial sewage discharge, livestock farming, and fertilizer application. The

Sensitive colorimetric detection of antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus on dairy farms using LAMP with pH-responsive polydiacetylene.

Rapidly and accurately detecting antibiotic-resistant pathogens in agriculture and husbandry is important since these represent a major threat to public health. While much attention has been dedicated to detecting now-common resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, fewer methods have been developed to assess resistance against macrolides in Staphylococcus aureus (SA). Here, we report a visual on-site detection system for macrolide resistant SA in dairy products. First, metagenomic sequencing in raw milk, cow manure, water and aerosol deposit collected from dairy
