Renal hydatid disease: diagnosis and treatment.

Four children with renal echinococcal cyst and associated liver involvement were treated in our clinic in the last 10 years. The diagnoses were suspected by ultrasonography and computed tomography and confirmed by the operative investigation that followed. One nephrectomy, one heminephrectomy and two cystectomies were performed. All children had uneventful recovery and they have not presented any recurrence so far. The value of the diagnostic modalities and the principles of the operative management are discussed.

Strengthening the sustainability of neglected tropical disease programs in Rwanda: An assessment of access and utilization of domestically-financed services for soil-transmitted helminthiases and schistosomiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) and schistosomiasis (SCH) infections remain some of the most prevalent neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), causing significant morbidity in most of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including Rwanda. With dwindling international funding for NTD services and recent commitments focused on other diseases considered easier to eliminate as a public health problem, it is essential to assess domestic financing sources' scale, efficiency, and effectiveness. The study aims to strengthen domestic efforts towards sustainable financing for neglected tropical disease p

Drug treatment of tropical parasitic infections: recent achievements and developments.

Drug development offers potential solutions to a number of tropical health diseases, although the expense of pharmaceutical research and lack of return on investment has limited the production of new agents. The greatest successes have been through the development of single dose therapy and mass treatment control programmes for a number of diseases. We review some of the current treatment regimens for malaria, intestinal helminth infection, onchocerciasis, filariasis and schistosomiasis, and their use in clinical practice. Geographical spread and emergence of drug resistant parasites have hind

Granuloma annulare masquerading as molluscum contagiosum-like eruption in an HIV-positive African woman.

A 33-year-old African woman who was HIV positive and being treated with zidovudine and zalcitabine presented with a 4-week history of a generalized pruritic rash superficially resembling molluscum contagiosum. The appearance of the lesions appeared to coincide with a dramatic decrease in her peripheral CD8+, and to a lesser extent, CD4+ T-lymphocyte count. Hematologic investigations revealed anemia with eosinophilia and she had a strongly positive Strongyloides antibody test. The eruption persisted despite appropriate antihelminthic treatment and temporary withdrawal of antiretroviral therapy.

Frequency and severity of musculoskeletal symptoms in humans during an outbreak of trichinellosis caused by Trichinella britovi.

Musculoskeletal symptoms such as myalgia are well-known features in the course of trichinellosis; however, the characteristics of musculoskeletal findings have been described in detail in only 1 study. The present study was aimed to determine the joint and muscle symptoms in subjects diagnosed with acute trichinellosis at our rheumatology unit during a Trichinella britovi outbreak that occurred in Izmir, Turkey, in 2004. In total, 98 patients (55 females, 43 males; mean age 32.3 +/- 10.9 yr) were included in the study. A detailed history and full musculoskeletal examination were obtained in ea

[Asymptomatic carriers of hydatidosis: epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment].

Until a short time ago, hydatidosis was considered a pathology that could only be resolved surgically. However, in recent years progress has been made with the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease, and new information on the natural history of hydatidosis has helped define new criteria for its treatment. It is now known that as many as 67% of the carriers of liver cysts who are asymptomatic remain so throughout their lives. This situation produces special results in immunologic testing. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has a sensitivity of 63% and a specificity of 97%

Efficacy and mechanism of action of harmine derivative H-2-104 against Echinococcus granulosus infection in mice.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a chronic zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus). Currently, pharmacologic treatments are limited to albendazole and mebendazole; however, these treatments are associated with significant side effects and limited therapeutic efficacy, highlighting the urgent need for the development of new drugs. Harmine (HM) has been reported to exhibit potent antiparasitic effects, although it is also accompanied by notable neurotoxicity. H-2-104, a derivative of HM obtained through structural modification of its par

The impact of dual- versus single-dosing and fatty food co-administration on albendazole efficacy against hookworm among children in Mayuge district, Uganda: Results from a 2x2 factorial randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mass Drug Administration (MDA) is the main strategy for control of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, with single-dose benzimidazole (albendazole or mebendazole) the principal MDA option. In Mayuge district, Uganda, an MDA programme has been in place for over fifteen years but hookworm infection remains common and there is concern that the effectiveness of single-dose albendazole as currently used for MDA may be sub-optimal. This study aims to assess the efficacy of dual- versus single-dose albendazole, with and without fatty food co-administration against hookworm, the do

Implications of global health funding patterns for implementation of a novel soil-transmitted helminth and lymphatic filariasis medicine: Ivermectin/albendazole fixed-dose combination.

BACKGROUND: Medicine donation programs have been central to neglected tropical disease (NTD) control, particularly for soil-transmitted helminths (STH), but growing concerns about sustainability, supply continuity, and country ownership highlight the need for new access models. A novel fixed-dose combination (FDC) of ivermectin and albendazole, recently endorsed by the European Medicines Agency, offers programmatic advantages over monotherapy. Unlike some existing treatments, the FDC may not be donated. This paper examines how the current drug donation landscape for STH shapes the prospects fo

Patterns, Potential Teratogenicity, and Associated Factors of Drugs Prescribed to Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Care Units in Debre Tabor Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Debre Tabor, Northwest Ethiopia.

Background: About 80% of pregnant women use at least one medication during their pregnancy period. Many drugs that are not allowed to be used during pregnancy (from FDA Pregnancy Categories D and X) were used. Irrational use of these drugs during pregnancy may result in different birth defects, as explained by thalidomide and diethylstilbestrol's tragedy. Knowledge of drug utilization and associated factors that affect the pattern is important to enhance rational prescribing. But information about prescription patterns and associated factors among pregnant women is scarce in the Debre Tabor ar

Repurposing flubendazole for glioblastoma ferroptosis by affecting xCT and TFRC proteins.

New uses of old drugs hold great promise for clinical translation. Flubendazole, an FDA-approved antiparasitic drug, has been shown to target p53 and promote apoptosis in glioblastoma (GBM) cells. However, its damaging mechanism in GBM remains elusive. Herein, we explored the ferroptosis-inducing ability of flubendazole on GBM cells. After treating glioma cell lines U251 and LN229 with the flubendazole (DMSO <1‰), cell viability was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner (IC50 for LN229 = 0.5331 μM, IC50 for U251 = 0.6809 μM), attributed to the induction of ferroptosis, as evidenced by

Assays to detect beta-tubulin codon 200 polymorphism in Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides.

BACKGROUND: The soil-transmitted helminths (STH) Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura are gastrointestinal parasites causing many disabilities to humans, particularly children. The benzimidazole (BZ) drugs, albendazole (ALB) and mebendazole (MBZ), are commonly used for mass treatment for STH. Unfortunately, there is concern that increased use of anthelmintics could select for resistant populations of these human parasites. In veterinary parasites, and lately in filarial nematodes, a single amino acid substitution from phenylalanine to tyrosine, known to be associated with benzimidazole
