Metabolomic fingerprint of Reynoutria japonica (Polygonaceae) using suspect screening with LC-HRMS and untargeted approach with GC-HRMS.

Knotweed (Reynoutria japonica) is an invasive plant whose ecological dominance in its invasive range may partly rely on allelopathic interactions mediated by root exudates and especially secondary metabolites of wide polarity range. To elucidate the chemical diversity of these exudates, a metabolomic strategy combining liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS) was employed. After optimization of EcoRoot methodology with design of experiment (DoE), root exudates were sampled with 3 d

Nitric oxide acts as an inducer of Strategy-I responses to increase Fe availability and mobilization in Fe-starved broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. oleracea).

Iron (Fe) deficiency causes reduced growth and yield in broccoli. This study elucidates how sodium nitroprusside (SNP), known as nitric oxide (NO) donor, mitigates the retardation caused by Fe deficiency in broccoli. The SNP caused substantial nitric oxide accumulation in the roots of Fe-deficient plants, which resulted in a significant improvement in chlorophyll levels, photosynthetic efficiency, and morphological growth parameters, showing that it has a favorable influence on recovering broccoli health. Ferric reductase activity and the expression of BoFRO1 (ferric chelate reductase) gene in

Minerals solubilizing and mobilizing microbiomes: A sustainable approach for managing minerals' deficiency in agricultural soil.

Agriculture faces challenges to fulfil the rising food demand due to shortage of arable land and various environmental stressors. Traditional farming technologies help in fulfilling food demand but they are harmful to humans and environmental sustainability. The food production along with agro-environmental sustainability could be achieved by encouraging farmers to use agro-environmental sustainable products such as biofertilizers and biopesticides consisting of live microbes or plant extract instead of chemical-based inputs. The eco-friendly formulations play a significant role in plant growt

Plant growth-promoting potential of 'Myroides gitamensis' isolated from virgin soils of Punjab.

Phosphate-solubilizing (PS) and phosphate-mineralizing (PM) bacteria are considered vital for augmenting the plant growth through phosphorus mobilization and plant growth-promoting attributes. In the present study, a rhizospheric bacterium was isolated from the virgin land of Punjab, India and identified as 'Myroides gitamensis' BSH-3 through 16S rRNA sequencing. 'M. gitamensis' showed potential halo zone on Pikovskaya agar. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that plant growth-promoting potential of 'M. gitamensis' has not been studied earlier. It was able to solubilize 17.53-106.66 µg/

Sorption, persistence, and leaching of the allelochemical umbelliferone in soils treated with nanoengineered sorbents.

Coumarins represent an important family of allelochemicals with fungicidal, bactericidal, insecticidal, nematicidal, and herbicidal properties. Like for other allelochemicals, the short persistence of coumarins in soils can reduce their biological activity and hamper their application as environmentally friendly agrochemicals. We evaluated the sorption of the coumarin umbelliferone by eight soils and six sorbent materials, and then selected two nanoengineered sorbents, hexadecyltrimethylammonium-modified Arizona montmorillonite (SA-HDTMA) and olive-mill waste biochar (BC), to assess the effect

Identification of Burkholderia pseudomallei Near-Neighbor Species in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Identification and characterization of near-neighbor species are critical to the development of robust molecular diagnostic tools for biothreat agents. One such agent, Burkholderia pseudomallei, a soil bacterium and the causative agent of melioidosis, is lacking in this area because of its genomic diversity and widespread geographic distribution. The Burkholderia genus contains over 60 species and occupies a large range of environments including soil, plants, rhizospheres, water, animals and humans. The identification of novel species in new locations necessitates the need to identify the true

Elevated root retention of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) in coniferous trees.

For decades, the explosive RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine) has been used for military and industrial applications. Residues of RDX pollute soils in large areas globally and the persistence and high soil mobility of these residues can lead to leaching into groundwater. Dendroremediation, i.e. the long-term use of trees to clean up polluted soils, is gaining acceptance as a green and sustainable strategy. Although the coniferous tree species Norway spruce and Scots pine cover large areas of military land in Central Europe, the potential of any coniferous tree for dendroremediation

Banana-associated microbial communities in Uganda are highly diverse but dominated by Enterobacteriaceae.

Bananas are among the most widely consumed foods in the world. In Uganda, the country with the second largest banana production in the world, bananas are the most important staple food. The objective of this study was to analyze banana-associated microorganisms and to select efficient antagonists against fungal pathogens which are responsible for substantial yield losses. We studied the structure and function of microbial communities (endosphere, rhizosphere, and soil) obtained from three different traditional farms in Uganda by cultivation-independent (PCR-SSCP fingerprints of 16S rRNA/ITS ge

Organomercurials. Their formation and pathways in the environment.

The most important mercury species in the environment is monomethylmercury (MMHg), the topic of this chapter. This organic mercury compound is normally not released into the environment but formed by natural processes. Mercuric mercury (Hg²(+)) is methylated by bacteria and to a lesser extent through abiotic pathways. Highest rates of formation are found in anoxic aquatic environments. Terrestrial systems are mostly irrelevant for MMHg production and not a concern. Most productive environments are sediments, wetlands, and coastal marshes, but also the anoxic hypolimnion of lakes and anaerobic

Genetic diversity and biocontrol potential of fluorescent pseudomonads producing phloroglucinols and hydrogen cyanide from Swiss soils naturally suppressive or conducive to Thielaviopsis basicola-mediated black root rot of tobacco.

Pseudomonas populations producing the biocontrol compounds 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (Phl) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) were found in the rhizosphere of tobacco both in Swiss soils suppressive to Thielaviopsis basicola and in their conducive counterparts. In this study, a collection of Phl+ HCN+Pseudomonas isolates from two suppressive and two conducive soils were used to assess whether suppressiveness could be linked to soil-specific properties of individual pseudomonads. The isolates were compared based on restriction analysis of the biocontrol genes phlD and hcnBC, enterobacterial repetitive

Purification and characterization of actinomycins from Streptomyces strain M7 active against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin resistant Enterococcus.

BACKGROUND: The increased rate of resistance among two highly concerned pathogens i.e. methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) necessitates the discovery of novel anti-MRSA and anti-VRE compounds. In microbial drug discovery, Streptomyces are well known source of two-thirds of natural antibiotics used clinically. Hence, screening of new strains of streptomycetes is the key step to get novel bioactive compounds with antimicrobial activity against drug resistant bacteria. RESULTS: In the present study, Streptomyces antibioticus strain M7, p
