Effects of linear-polarized near-infrared light irradiation on chronic pain.

In order to study the efficacy of linear-polarized near-infrared light irradiation (LPNIR) on relieving chronic pain in conjunction with nerve block (NB) or local block (LB), a 3-week prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled study was conducted to evaluate the pre- and post-therapy pain intensity. Visual analogue scales (VASs) were measured in all patients before and 6 months after therapy visiting the pain clinic during the period of August 2007 to January 2008. A total of 52 patients with either shoulder periarthritis or myofascial pain syndrome or lateral epicondylitis were randoml

Epicondylopathia humeri (EPH) and peritendinitis humeroscapularis (PHS): evaluation of radiation therapy long-term results and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of radiotherapy (RT) for degenerative inflammatory disorders has been clinically documented in historical studies, but long-term follow-up and assessment with objective criteria are still not available. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1986 to 1991, 200 consecutive patients with symptomatic epicondylopathia humeri (EPH, n = 104) and peritendinitis humeroscapularis (PHS, n = 96) were referred to our clinic. All patients were refractory to conventional therapy prior to irradiation. One hundred fifty-six patients with 192 sites (due to bilateral symptoms) received a full

A Meta-Analysis of the Effect of Corticosteroid Injection for Enthesopathy of the Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis Origin.

PURPOSE: The null hypothesis that there is no effect of corticosteroid injection on visual analog scale for pain in patients with enthesopathy of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (eECRB) origin 6 months after treatment was tested. Our secondary hypotheses were that there is no effect of corticosteroid injection on pain intensity at 1 and 3 months after treatment; that there is no effect of corticosteroid injection on grip strength at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment; and that there is no effect of corticosteroid injection on Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scores at 1, 3 and 6

Musculoskeletal balance of the human wrist elucidated using intraoperative laser diffraction.

This review describes a series of experiments in which sarcomere length was measured in human wrist muscles to understand their design. Sarcomere length measurements were combined with studies on cadaveric extremities to generate biomechanical models of human wrist function and to provide insights into the mechanism by which wrist strength balance is achieved. Intraoperative measurements of the human extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle during wrist joint rotation reveal that this muscle appears to be designed to operate on the descending limb of its length-tension curve and generates

Self-reported physical exposure association with medial and lateral epicondylitis incidence in a large longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Although previous studies have related occupational exposure and epicondylitis, the evidence is moderate and mostly based on cross-sectional studies. Suspected physical exposures were tested over a 3-year period in a large longitudinal cohort study of workers in the USA. METHOD: In a population-based study including a variety of industries, 1107 newly employed workers were examined; only workers without elbow symptoms at baseline were included. Baseline questionnaires collected information on personal characteristics and self-reported physical work exposures and psychosocial mea
