Epistaxis in dental and maxillofacial practice: a comprehensive review.

The lifetime incidence of epistaxis in dental and maxillofacial practice has been reported to be as high as 60% and can be caused by dental implant placement, Le Fort I osteotomy, intranasal supernumerary tooth, odontogenic tumors, blood disorders and maxillofacial trauma. Most epistaxis cases are minor and easily managed with direct compression on the nares for 10 minutes. For more significant or recurrent epistaxis, other techniques might include electrocautery, anterior or posterior nasal packing, or Foley catheter balloon. For patients with refractory epistaxis, cauterization of the spheno

Cleidocranial dysplasia: etiology and stomatognathic and craniofacial abnormalities.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare disorder which is inherited as an autosomal genetic trait. It is characterized by defective ossification, delayed bone and tooth development, stomatognathic and craniofacial abnormalities, and it is caused by mutations in the RUNX2 gene that is responsible for osteoblast differentiation. The purpose of this review is to collect and analyze data in the literature on orofacial typical manifestations of the syndrome and to present knowledge of the eziopatogenics mechanisms of the CCD. Clinical, genetic, aetiopathogenetic studies on this syndrome were compli

[Orthodontic partial disimpaction of mandibular third molars prior to surgical extraction].

Odontodysplasia of the third molars is a relatively common anomaly. The frequent complications associated with this disorder very often constitute an indication for extraction of the third molar. This surgical treatment can damage the lower alveolar nerve and/or trigger distal bone loss of the second molar, thus jeopardizing the future status of the periodontium. The author presents two case studies treated exclusively with miniscrews with no dental anchorage in order to achieve partial eruption of the third molar moving it away from the lower alveolar nerve and to avoid unwanted impact on oth

Impaction and apical root angulation of the maxillary central incisors due to supernumerary teeth: combined surgical and orthodontic treatment.

This case report describes the treatment of a boy with both central maxillary incisors impacted because of 2 supernumerary teeth. Therapeutic management of the impacted teeth was combined with orthodontic treatment of a Class II Division 1 malocclusion. A sequential approach of surgical removal of the supernumerary teeth with 2 stages of surgical exposure and orthodontic traction of the impacted teeth resulted in proper incisor positioning. Close monitoring and multidisciplinary cooperation during the various treatment phases led to a successful esthetic result, with good periodontal health an

Comparison of mesenchymal-like stem/progenitor cells derived from supernumerary teeth with stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth.

AIMS: Dental tissue has been the focus of attention as an easily accessible postnatal tissue source of high-quality stem cells. Since the first report on the dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) from permanent third molar teeth, stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) were identified as a population distinct from DPSCs. In this study, we compared DPSCs from supernumerary teeth and SHED in three age- and sex-matched patients. PATIENTS & METHODS: Dental samples were obtained from the three patients, who were 6 years old and male, with the parental consent of the three donors, and then

A natural history of cleidocranial dysplasia.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia associated with clavicle hypoplasia and dental abnormalities. The condition is caused by mutations in the CBFA1 gene, a transcription factor that activates osteoblast differentiation. Clinical characteristics associated with CCD have previously been described in case reports and small case series. This study was undertaken to gain a more complete delineation of clinical complications associated with CCD. The study population was composed of 90 CCD individuals and 56 relative controls ascertained from genetic and dental p

Odontoma Recurrence. The Importance of Radiographic Controls: Case Report with a 7-Year Follow-Up.

Odontomas are benign tumors characterized by slow and limited growth with a rare recurrence. Odontomas are generally detected by radiographic findings in the radiopaque stage, where calcification of the tissues is observed. This article seeks to report the recurrence of a radiologically diagnosed odontoma to show the importance of radiographic controls after enucleation as a diagnostic and follow-up method. Case report: A female patient, 9 years old, attended dental care in 2020 due to malpositioned teeth. In the intraoral clinical examination, she presented stage II mixed dentition with crowd

Image analysis and superimposition of 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography models.

Three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques can provide valuable information to clinicians and researchers. But as we move from traditional 2-dimensional (2D) cephalometric analysis to new 3D techniques, it is often necessary to compare 2D with 3D data. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides simulation tools that can help bridge the gap between image types. CBCT acquisitions can be made to simulate panoramic, lateral, and posteroanterior cephalometric radioagraphs so that they can be compared with preexisting cephalometric databases. Applications of 3D imaging in orthodontics include init
