Operative versus simple arthroscopic surgery for chronic closed lock of the temporomandibular joint: a clinical study of 344 arthroscopic procedures.

Arthroscopic surgery has been reported to decrease pain in relation to the TMJ, improving maximal interincisal opening (MIO). The aim of the present study was to report the clinical outcome of arthroscopic surgery for the treatment of chronic closed lock (CCL) of the TMJ. Five hundred consecutive patients (670 joints) with TMJ derangement who underwent arthroscopy between 1995 and 2004 were retrospectively analysed. All were classified as II-V according to Wilkes. Within the series, various arthroscopic procedures were performed. The inclusion criteria for CCL of the TMJ were met by 257 patien

Expanding the mutational spectrum of CRLF1 in Crisponi/CISS1 syndrome.

Crisponi syndrome (CS) and cold-induced sweating syndrome type 1 (CISS1) share clinical characteristics, such as dysmorphic features, muscle contractions, scoliosis, and cold-induced sweating, with CS patients showing a severe clinical course in infancy involving hyperthermia associated with death in most cases in the first years of life. To date, 24 distinct CRLF1 mutations have been found either in homozygosity or in compound heterozygosity in CS/CISS1 patients, with the highest prevalence in Sardinia, Turkey, and Spain. By reporting 11 novel CRLF1 mutations, here we expand the mutational sp

Adenoid cystic carcinoma with dedifferentiation/expansion of the luminal cell component and preserved biphasic morphology - Early high-grade transformation.

We present two patients (29 and 67 years) with histomorphologic and immunohistochemical evidence of early high-grade transformation of adenoid cystic carcinoma in the nasal cavity and floor of mouth, respectively. The component of early high-grade transformation was characterized by 1) selective expansion of the luminal (CK7+, c-kit+, p63-) cell component with severe cytologic atypia and significantly increased Ki-67 proliferation index, and 2) retained albeit attenuated abluminal (CK7-, c-kit-, p63+) cells, surrounding nests of high-grade luminal cells.

The reliability of using light therapy compared with LASER in pain reduction of temporomandibular disorders: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) refer to a group of symptoms where pain is the most leading cause to demand a treatment by the patient. Light therapies are of great importance at current times due to its biosafety and non-invasive quality when used for the management of TMD symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of red LED light with low-level LASER in treating TMD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A double-blind randomized clinical study was conducted and included 60 patients along 3 groups (20 for each group) presented with myofascial pain related to TMD. Patients

Mucormycosis of the Mandible and Tongue: A Systematic Scoping Review.

AIM: Mucormycosis is a rare human infection associated with Mucorales, a group of filamentous moulds found in different environmental niches. Its oral manifestations may occur in the mandible and tongue despite being rare. We aimed to systematically review the data on clinical manifestations, risk factors, diagnostic approaches, treatment options, and outcomes of mandibular and tongue mucormycosis. METHODS: An electronic search of articles published between January 1975 and November 2022 in PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases was performed. A total of 22 articles met the inclusion cr

Retromolar intubation with video intubating stylet in difficult airway: A randomized crossover manikin study.

OBJECTIVE: Difficult airway situations, such as trismus and neck rigidity, may prohibit standard midline orotracheal intubation. An alternative route of intubation from the retromolar space using a fiberoptic scope or rigid intubation stylet has been reported. There is no study investigating the applicability of retromolar intubation using a video intubating stylet. This study comparatively analyzed difficult airway management using a video intubating stylet in the retromolar and standard midline approaches. METHODS: A randomized crossover manikin study was conducted between January 2021 and

A data review of airway management in patients with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer: a single-institution experience.

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer impose significant threat to airway management. Head and neck radiotherapy (HNRT) may further increase the difficulty of tracheal intubation. We hypothesized that a history of HNRT would be associated with a high rate of difficult tracheal intubation. METHODS: Adult patients with a history of HNRT were identified. Non-HNRT controls were case-matched by age, sex and body mass index. The tracheal intubation status between the two patient groups (treated vs. untreated with HNRT) was compared. The t test was used to evaluate differences in continuo

The FOXP2-Driven Network in Developmental Disorders and Neurodegeneration.

The transcription repressor FOXP2 is a crucial player in nervous system evolution and development of humans and songbirds. In order to provide an additional insight into its functional role we compared target gene expression levels between human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) stably overexpressing FOXP2 cDNA of either humans or the common chimpanzee, Rhesus monkey, and marmoset, respectively. RNA-seq led to identification of 27 genes with differential regulation under the control of human FOXP2, which were previously reported to have FOXP2-driven and/or songbird song-related expression regulati
