Prefrontal cortex cognitive deficits in children treated early and continuously for PKU.

To begin to study the importance of dopamine for executive function abilities dependent on prefrontal cortex during early childhood, the present investigation studied children in whom we predicted reduced dopamine in prefrontal cortex but otherwise normal brains. These are children treated early and continuously for the metabolic disorder phenylketonuria (PKU). Untreated PKU is the most common biochemical cause of mental retardation. The root problem is an inability to convert one amino acid, phenylalanine (Phe), into another, tyrosine (Tyr), the precursor of dopamine. Phe levels in the bloods

Exploring medication adherence and risk factors in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing oral targeted therapy: a cross-sectional observational study.

BACKGROUND: Oral targeted therapy is now integral to the management of older adults with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), yet suboptimal adherence persistently undermines its real-world effectiveness. Although the Health Belief Model (HBM) is widely applied to explain health behaviors, its integration with self-efficacy theory-particularly in the HCC context, where the volitional gap between belief and action frequently dictates clinical outcomes-remains inadequately characterized. OBJECTIVES: To elucidate factors associated with oral targeted therapy adherence in elderly HCC patients and to e

The cerebro-pelvic axis: a unified framework linking higher brain function, pelvic floor control, and lower urinary tract dysfunction.

Clinical practice often treats higher brain disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease and prolonged disorders of consciousness) and pelvic floor dysfunction (e.g., stress urinary incontinence and overactive bladder) as unrelated problems, despite frequent co-occurrence and overlapping vulnerability contexts (e.g., aging, frailty, medications). Here, "axis" denotes a control-architecture mapping and phenotyping heuristic for LUT control and pelvic-floor outlet coordination, rather than a claim of new anatomy or shared etiology. Accordingly, we use a hypothesis-generating control-loop framing that li

Chocolate odor enhances resistance exercise performance through appetite suppression in the fasted state: an exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory stimuli may alter appetite, affective responses, and exercise performance through psychobiological processes. However, whether odor-induced changes in appetite and pleasantness translate into measurable improvements in resistance exercise performance remains unclear. This exploratory study investigated whether exposure to chocolate-related odors alters appetite perception, odor pleasantness, and resistance exercise capacity in moderately trained men. METHODS: Twenty-three participants completed a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial with three odor conditions pres

Arterio-venous metabolite and electrolyte responses to low-load training with and without blood flow restriction versus high-load training to failure.

PURPOSE: Low-load resistance training with blood flow restriction (BFR) has gained popularity for eliciting muscular adaptations comparable to high-load resistance training. However, its acute metabolic and electrolyte responses within the exercising limb, particularly under exhaustive conditions, remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to assess these responses using simultaneous arterial and venous blood sampling during unilateral elbow flexion to volitional failure under three conditions: low-load (LL-RT, 30%1RM), low-load with BFR (LL-BFR-RT, 30%1RM, 50%LOP), and high-load (H

Combined effects of normobaric hypoxia and cold on respiratory system responses to high-intensity exercise.

Cold temperatures (<-15°C) increase exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB), while hypoxic-induced hyperventilation exacerbates respiratory muscle fatigue for a given exercising task. This study aimed to determine the individual and combined effects of cold and normobaric hypoxia on the respiratory system responses to high-intensity exercise. Fourteen trained male runners ( V ̇ O 2 max ${{\dot{V}}_{{{{\mathrm{O}}}_2}{\mathrm{max}}}}$ : 64 ± 5 mL/kg/min) randomly performed an incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) to volitional exhaustion under four environmental conditions: no

Computational Methods to Support Clinical Assessment in Examination of Walking Ability.

Regularity of muscle activities and smoothness of limb movements can be useful characteristics of walking patterns when rehabilitation training protocols are considered. Arm and leg cycling training may improve walking abilities of individuals with incomplete spinal cord injuries (iSCI). Recent studies investigated the effect of simultaneous voluntary arm cycling complemented with functional electrical stimulation assisted leg cycling (hybrid FES cycling) training on walking abilities [1]. Our objective was to find additional metrics that can characterize these changes and quantitatively suppo

Changes in miRNA expression in patients with peripheral arterial vascular disease during moderate- and vigorous-intensity physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Walking is the preferred therapy for peripheral arterial disease in early stage. An effect of walking exercise is the increase of blood flow and fluid shear stress, leading, triggered by arteriogenesis, to the formation of collateral blood vessels. Circulating micro-RNA may act as an important information transmitter in this process. We investigated the acute effects of a single bout of 1) aerobic walking with moderate intensity; and 2) anaerobic walking with vigorous intensity on miRNA parameters related to vascular collateral formation. METHODS: Ten (10) patients with peripheral

Sensing and decoding the neural drive to paralyzed muscles during attempted movements of a person with tetraplegia using a sleeve array.

Motor neurons convey information about motor intent that can be extracted and interpreted to control assistive devices. However, most methods for measuring the firing activity of single neurons rely on implanted microelectrodes. Although intracortical brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been shown to be safe and effective, the requirement for surgery poses a barrier to widespread use that can be mitigated by instead using noninvasive interfaces. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of deriving motor control signals from a wearable sensor that can detect residual motor

Improvements in Bladder Function Following Activity-Based Recovery Training With Epidural Stimulation After Chronic Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in profound neurologic impairment with widespread deficits in sensorimotor and autonomic systems. Voluntary and autonomic control of bladder function is disrupted resulting in possible detrusor overactivity, low compliance, and uncoordinated bladder and external urethral sphincter contractions impairing storage and/or voiding. Conservative treatments managing neurogenic bladder post-injury, such as oral pharmacotherapy and catheterization, are important components of urological surveillance and clinical care. However, as urinary complications continue to impact

Association between brain morphometry and aerobic fitness level and sex in healthy emerging adults.

OBJECTIVE: Aerobic fitness may be beneficial for neuroanatomical structure. However, few have investigated this in emerging adults while also accounting for potential sex differences. Here we examine aerobic fitness level, sex, and their interaction in relation to cortical thickness, surface area, and volume. METHOD: Sixty-three young adults between the ages of 16-26 were balanced for sex and demonstrated a wide range of aerobic fitness levels. Exclusion criteria included left-handedness, past-year independent Axis-I disorders, major medical/neurologic disorders, prenatal medical issues, pren
