Retrospective Case Series of Spinal Cord Neurapraxia in Male Adolescent Athletes: Can These Athletes Return-to-Play?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While spinal cord neurapraxia (SCN) is a documented pathology in athletes, guidance for neurosurgeons evaluating these patients is sparse. Therefore, in a cohort of adolescent athletes with SCN, we sought to (1) review their presentation and management and (2) describe outcomes and return-to-play (RTP). METHODS: A single-center, retrospective case series was conducted to examine adolescent athletes diagnosed with SCN from 2017 to 2022. SCN was defined as an episode of bilateral upper and/or lower extremity weakness/numbness after an impact during sport. Collected va

Vitamin D and Stress Fractures in Sport: Preventive and Therapeutic Measures-A Narrative Review.

There are numerous risk factors for stress fractures that have been identified in literature. Among different risk factors, a prolonged lack of vitamin D (25(OH)D) can lead to stress fractures in athletes since 25(OH)D insufficiency is associated with an increased incidence of a fracture. A 25(OH)D value of <75.8 nmol/L is a risk factor for a stress fracture. 25(OH)D deficiency is, however, only one of several potential risk factors. Well-documented risk factors for a stress fracture include female sex, white ethnicity, older age, taller stature, lower aerobic fitness, prior physical inactivit

Epidemiology of Anterior Tibial Spine Fractures in Young Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study of 122 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Historically, bicycle accidents were described as the most common mechanism for pediatric anterior tibial spine fractures (ATSFs). There is a paucity of current literature examining the demographic factors associated with these injuries. The purpose of this cohort study was to characterize the epidemiology of ATSFs presenting to a single tertiary referral pediatric hospital. METHODS: A consecutive cohort of 122 pediatric patients with ATSFs between 1996 and 2014 were reviewed. Radiographic variables, classification of fractures (Meyers and McKeever type), age, sex, height, weight,

Physical and performance differences among forwards, defensemen, and goalies in elite women's ice hockey.

Positional differences have been examined in women's basketball, field hockey, netball, and volleyball, but not in elite women's ice hockey. Our purpose was to describe and compare physical, fitness, and skating performance characteristics of forwards (F), defensemen (D), and goalies (G). Subjects were 112 University of Alberta women players (21.4 +/- 2.9 years of age). A full anthropometric battery was conducted on each player. Heath-Carter anthropometric somatotypes were calculated. Percent body fat (%fat) was estimated from both general and population-specific equations. Subjects performed

Exercise and bone mineral density in mature female athletes.

An understanding of the relationship between weight-bearing activity and bone mineral density (BMD) is important in devising strategies to maximize and maintain skeletal strength in the female population, particularly those entering menopause. Three contrasting groups (N = 20) of mature female athletes (42-50 yr) with long-term (> 20 yr) histories of significant training and performance in their chosen sport were studied cross-sectionally. The groups were: (i) high impact sport (netball/basketball; HIGH), (ii) medium impact sport (running/field hockey; MED) and (iii) a nonimpact sport (swimmin

Giving way event during a combined stepping and crossover cutting task in an individual with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency.

STUDY DESIGN: Case study. OBJECTIVE: To compare knee kinematics and moments of nongiving way trials to a giving way trial during a combined stepping and crossover cutting activity. BACKGROUND: The knee kinematics and moments associated with giving way episodes suggest motor control strategies that lead to instability and recovery of stability during movement. METHODS AND MEASURES: A 27-year-old woman with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency reported giving way while performing a combined stepping and crossover cutting activity. A motion analysis system recorded motion of the pelvis, femur

Coexistence of Trunk or Lower Extremity Pain with Elbow and/or Shoulder Pain among Young Overhead Athletes: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Elbow or shoulder injuries are common in overhead sports. Because energy derived from the lower extremity passes through the trunk to the upper extremity in overhead motion, a break in such a kinetic chain could lead to arm injuries. However, there is only limited information about the role of the trunk and lower extremity support in preventing elbow or shoulder injuries. This study aimed to explore the association of trunk and lower extremity pain with elbow/shoulder pain among young overhead athletes. We conducted a cross-sectional study using self-reported questionnaires mailed to young ath

Osteochondral allograft transplantation for treatment of glenohumeral instability.

The intimate contact between articular surfaces of the humeral head and glenoid labrum contribute to glenohumeral stability. When the articular surface area of these 2 surfaces is decreased, as with the presence of a bony Bankart lesion or an engaging Hill-Sachs lesion, the shoulder is more prone to dislocation. Although osteochondral allograft transplantation has become widely popular for the treatment of osteochondral defects of the knee, it is less used for treating bony defects of the humeral head. We present a case in which a 16-year-old male athlete with multiple anterior shoulder disloc

Construction of a sports bio mechanical injury prediction and AI warning system based on wearable sensors.

BACKGROUND: Real-time warning and prevention of sports injuries are core challenges in the fields of sports medicine and health management. Traditional methods rely on single sensor data and static threshold rules, which have problems such as single monitoring dimension, high false alarm rate, and insufficient real-time performance, making it difficult to meet the precise prevention and control needs in complex motion scenes. METHODS: In response to the above issues, this study proposes a sports biomechanical injury prediction and real-time warning system based on wearable sensors. Through mu
