Bovine coronavirus in naturally and experimentally exposed calves; viral shedding and the potential for transmission.

BACKGROUND: Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is a widely distributed pathogen, causing disease and economic losses in the cattle industry worldwide. Prevention of virus spread is impeded by a lack of basic knowledge concerning viral shedding and transmission potential in individual animals. The aims of the study were to investigate the duration and quantity of BCoV shedding in feces and nasal secretions related to clinical signs, the presence of virus in blood and tissues and to test the hypothesis that seropositive calves are not infectious to naïve in-contact calves three weeks after BCoV infection

Herd-level risk factors for bovine tuberculosis in French cattle herds.

Although officially free of bovine tuberculosis (bTB), France has been experiencing a slight increase in the incidence and geographical spread of the infection. Eradication of bTB requires determining the infection risk factors. Although several studies identifying bTB risk factors have been conducted in the United Kingdom and Spain, no information is currently available regarding bTB risk factors in French cattle. The objective of this work was thus to study the factors associated with the risk of bTB in cattle herds in three French administrative divisions (départements of Ardennes, Côte d'O

Causes of mortality in laying hens in different housing systems in 2001 to 2004.

BACKGROUND: The husbandry systems for laying hens were changed in Sweden during the years 2001 - 2004, and an increase in the number of submissions for necropsy from laying hen farms was noted. Hence, this study was initiated to compare causes of mortality in different housing systems for commercial laying hens during this change. METHODS: Based on results from routine necropsies of 914 laying hens performed at the National Veterinary Institute (SVA) in Uppsala, Sweden between 2001 and 2004, a retrospective study on the occurrence of diseases and cannibalism, i.e., pecking leading to mortalit

The effects of bovine viral diarrhoea virus on cattle reproduction in relation to disease control.

Bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) is a major reproductive pathogen in cattle. Infection of the bull can lead to a fall in semen quality and the isolation of infectious virus in the ejaculate, while infection in the cow leads to poor conception rates, abortions and congenital defects. BVDV also reduces the animal's resistance to other respiratory and enteric pathogens. The prevalence of BVDV is primarily due to the efficiency with which the virus crosses the placenta of susceptible females. Calves that survive infection during the first trimester of pregnancy are born with a persistent and li

Ecology and management of arthropod pests of poultry.

The worldwide spread of modern, high-density confined poultry production systems under the direction of integrators has intensified the importance of a select number of arthropod ectoparasites and habitat pests. This concentrated production of poultry provides artificial ecosystems that are sometimes ideal for the development of large populations of arthropod pests. At the same time the systems are amenable to integrated pest management involving a multipest and multimethod approach to reducing or eliminating arthropod pests. Since rodents are major pests, they should be included in an integra

Seroprevalence of porcine coronavirus antibodies in Iberian pigs and wild boars from central-western Spain.

Porcine coronaviruses (PoCoVs) are common etiological viral agents of enteric and respiratory disease in swine, but most epidemiological information derives from intensively managed herds. Data from outdoor systems and wildlife remain scarce, despite the potential role of free-range production and wildlife-livestock interactions in sustaining virus transmission. In southern Spain, the traditional Dehesa agroforestry system supports Iberian pigs that share space and resources with wild boars and other species, creating interfaces where cross-species circulation may occur. To address this gap, w

Molecular prevalence and risk factors of ovine herpesvirus-2-associated malignant catarrhal fever in cattle from Riau Province, Indonesia: A cross-sectional nested polymerase chain reaction study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a highly fatal disease caused by ovine herpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2), with sheep acting as asymptomatic reservoir hosts. In Indonesia, MCF remains underdiagnosed due to its predominantly subclinical presentation, particularly in regions where mixed ruminant farming is practiced. Riau Province has a large population of Bali cattle, and sheep production is increasing, raising concerns regarding OvHV-2 spillover. This study aimed to determine the molecular prevalence of OvHV-2 infection in cattle and identify individual- and herd-level risk factors

Pan-continental spillover risk: integrated spatiotemporal, transmissibility and surveillance analysis of avian influenza a(H5N1) in Africa.

BACKGROUND: The HPAI H5N1 panzootic represents a critical threat to human health in Africa, where traditional poultry systems and dense human-animal interfaces facilitate frequent zoonotic spillover. While sporadic human cases raise pandemic concerns, continent-wide integration of spatial dynamics, transmissibility indicators, and surveillance performance has been lacking. This study quantifies avian influenza transmission over two decades across Africa, identifies geographical hotspots, and evaluates the responsiveness of current surveillance systems. METHODS: We analysed 8,037 avian influen

Prevalence and genomic characterization of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium across a duck breeder-hatchery-grow-out production system in China.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a leading bacterial pathogen responsible for foodborne outbreaks worldwide, with poultry products being a major source of human salmonellosis. While previous studies have predominantly focused on Salmonella transmission in the chicken production chain, ducks have received comparatively little attention as a potential reservoir host. In this study, we investigated Salmonella contamination across a commercial duck breeder-hatchery-grow-out (BHG) production system in Inner Mongolia, Hebei, and Shandong, China, comprising five breeder duck farms, one hatchery, and
