HASHIMOTO THYROIDITIS AND VESTIBULAR DYSFUNCTION.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to analyze the existing literature concerning the relationship between Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) and vestibular dysfunction. METHODS: We used electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library) to search and collect all published articles about the association between HT and vestibular disorders. RESULTS: Several observational and retrospective studies have postulated a relationship between thyroid autoimmunity and vestibular disorders. In most cases, an appropriate control group was lacking, and the impact of thyroid functional status could not pre

Analysis of auditory and vestibular function in patients with unilateral Meniere's disease.

CONCLUSION: The percentage of the unilateral weakness of the caloric response also reflects the clinical progress of Meniere's disease (MD), including clinical hearing loss. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between hearing status and vestibular function in patients with MD. METHODS: Seventy-nine patients with unilateral definite MD underwent bithermal air caloric testing, vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) testing, and pure tone audiometry (PTA). The stages of the disease, clinical hearing level of the diseased ears, and dPTA (the difference in hearing level between ears in e

[Is recurrent loss of low frequency tone perception--without vertigo--a precursor of Meniere disease?].

PURPOSE: Recurrent low-frequency sensory hearing loss is one characteristic sign of Meniere's disease. It is therefore often assumed to be a prodromal sign of Meniere's disease. METHODS: We report on 81 patients with recurrent low-frequency sensory hearing loss who did not previously suffer from vertigo. All patients underwent a follow-up examination after at least 1 year up to more than 10 years after the onset of the disease [average: 64.65 months (SD 56.33)]. CONCLUSIONS: Only 3.7% of these patients developed the typical signs of Meniere's disease with labyrinthine vertigo, whereas 25.9%

Diagnosis and following up of Ménière's disease using multifrequency tympanometry-Cutoff values and temporal changes in measurements.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to verify cutoff values for G width (the width of bimodal peaks for the waveform obtained when measuring conductance at 2000Hz) in Japanese individuals diagnosed with Ménière's disease (MD) using multifrequency tympanometry (MFT) and to determine the relationship between the G width and ability to hear low-pitched sounds using measurements over time. METHODS: The study included 51 patients with clinically diagnosed MD, who had not undergone endolymphatic sac surgery, but had no other known ear disease (57 ears in patients aged 22-80 years were affected, and 45 ears

Stratification of patients with Menière's disease based on eye movement videos recorded from the beginning of vertigo attacks and contrast-enhanced MRI findings.

PURPOSE: Diagnosis of Menière's disease (MD) relies on subjective factors and the patients diagnosed with MD may have heterogeneous pathophysiologies. This study aims to stratify MD patients using two objective data, nystagmus videos and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CE-MRI). METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study. According to the Japan Society for Equilibrium Research criteria (c-JSER), adults diagnosed with definite MD and who obtained videos recorded by portable nystagmus recorder immediately following vertigo attacks and underwent CE-MRI of the inner ear w

Therapeutic role of intravenous glycerol for Meniere's disease. Preliminary results.

PURPOSE: Osmotic diuretics such as glycerol are used for diagnostic purposes in patients with a suspect of Meniere's disease (MD). Scientific evidence in the animal model and in humans has shown that glycerol can induce a reduction in endolymphatic hydrops; however, its use for therapeutic purposes in MD has never been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness on symptom control of intravenous glycerol in a sample of patients with definite unilateral MD not responsive to dietary restrictions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients with unilateral intractable MD were inc

Silent otitis media.

There is a traditional view that chronic otitis media and chronic mastoiditis must exist in the presence of a tympanic membrane perforation. Based on a human histopathological study of 123 temporal bones with chronic otitis media out of 333 temporal bones with all forms of otitis media pathology, only 24 patients (36 ears) had symptoms of otological disease recorded on their charts and only 19.5% of these had an associated tympanic membrane perforation. Unsuspected findings of chronic otitis media (active or inactive) are occasionally confirmed at exploratory tympanotomy. Such quiet chronic pa

Various causes and clinical characteristics in vertigo in children with normal eardrums.

OBJECTIVE: The differential diagnosis of vertigo in children is extensive. Otitis media and middle ear effusion could be the most common causes of vertigo in children, but there are some problems in detecting the other causes for vertigo because they are one of most frequent diseases of childhood. The purpose of this study is to review the clinical characteristics and both the audiological and vestibular findings of vertigo in children with normal eardrums, who do not show otitis media or middle ear effusion, and to assist in making a differential diagnosis of vertigo. METHODS: The fifty five

Macrophage-derived CXCL8 as a mediator of inflammatory attacks in Meniere's disease.

BACKGROUND: Ménière's disease (MD) is a complex disorder whose pathogenesis extends beyond endolymphatic hydrops to involve dysregulated immune responses. While a subset of patients exhibits a "low-cytokine phenotype" during remission, the mechanisms underlying the transition to acute inflammatory attacks triggered by environmental factors remain poorly understood. METHODS: We employed an integrative multi-omics approach to explore the immune microenvironment of MD. This included bioinformatic analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from GSE109558, featuring PBMCs from MD patients a

Clinical and radiological findings in Arnold Chiari malformation.

BACKGROUND: The Chiari Malformation I (CMI) is a disorder of uncertain origin that has been traditionally defined as downward herniation of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum. The anomaly is a leading cause of syringomyelia and occurs inassociation with osseus abnormalities at the craniovertebral junction. In contrast to other Chiari malformations, CMI tends to present in the second or third decade of life and is sometimes referred to as the 'adult-type' Chiari malformation. The objective was to document clinical and radiological findings in Arnold Chiari Malformation-I. METHOD
