Intravesical therapies for catheter-associated urinary tract infections: current approaches and future directions.

SUMMARYUrinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections worldwide, with catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs) representing a major subset in healthcare settings. CAUTIs significantly increase patient morbidity, mortality, hospital stays, and healthcare costs, while driving antibiotic overuse and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Systemic antibiotics often fail due to poor biofilm penetration, localized infection sites, and rising multidrug resistance, highlighting the urgent need for alternative, targeted therapies. This review discusses the role of intravesical therapi

Impact of ceftazidime avibactam on colonization by carbapenem resistant Enterobacterales during treatment of related infections.

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE), particularly carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) and carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli (CREC), are significant pathogens causing healthcare-associated infections. This retrospective study assesses the effectiveness of ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ/AVI) in achieving perianal swab (PAS) negativity compared to other treatments, including colistin, polymyxin B, meropenem, and combinations with fosfomycin. We retrospectively analyzed 147 CRE-colonized patients (76 females) screened with PAS samples from January 14, 2021, to April 27, 2024.

KPC-2 and VIM-1 producing Klebsiella pneumoniae ST39 high-risk clone isolated from a clinical sample in Volos, Greece.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a major human pathogen, because it causes both community- and hospital-acquired infections. Several multidrug-resistant high-risk clones of K. pneumoniae have been reported worldwide, and these are responsible for high numbers of difficult-to-treat infections. In Greece, a K. pneumoniae ST39 high-risk clone was detected in 2019 in a survey of carbapenem- and/or colistin-resistant Enterobacteriacae. The present study included nine carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CRKP) isolates collected during a retrospective analysis from October 2020 to December 2020. They were is

Genomic insights into the expansion of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae within Portuguese hospitals.

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-KP) are a public health concern, causing infections with a high mortality rate, limited therapeutic options and challenging infection control strategies. In Portugal, the CR-KP rate has increased sharply, but the factors associated with this increase are poorly explored. In order to address this question, phylogenetic and resistome analysis were used to compare the draft genomes of 200 CR-KP isolates collected in 2017-2019 from five hospitals in the Lisbon region, Portugal. Most CR-KP belonged to sequence type (ST) 13 (29%), ST17 (15%), ST348 (13%

Searching for links between environmental and clinical mecA+Staphylococcus aureus: A comparative genomics study.

Staphylococcus aureus integrate the list of highly virulent and antibiotic resistant pathogens, mainly due to the mecA gene, associated with methicillin resistance. Given the ubiquity of this species, the aim of this study was to investigate whether closely related mecA+S. aureus found in the environment can be also thrive as clinical isolates and if the respective accessory genome may suggest bacterial adaptation. The genomes of environmental (water, animal facilities, food products, n = 111) isolates were compared with closely related genomes of clinical origin (human patients, n = 103). The

Population analysis of heavy metal and biocide resistance genes in Salmonella enterica from human clinical cases in New Hampshire, United States.

Microbes frequently encounter heavy metals and other toxic compounds generated from natural biogeochemical processes and anthropogenic activities. Here, we analyzed the prevalence and association of genes conferring resistance to heavy metals, biocides, and antimicrobial compounds in 394 genome sequences of clinical human-derived S. enterica from New Hampshire, USA. The most prevalent was the gold operon (gesABC-golTSB), which was present in 99.2% of the genomes. In contrast, the other five heavy metal operons (arsenic, copper, mercury, silver, tellurite) were present in 0.76% (3/394)-5.58% (2

Resistance to ceftazidime/avibactam in infections and colonisations by KPC-producing Enterobacterales: a systematic review of observational clinical studies.

OBJECTIVES: Ceftazidime/avibactam (CAZ-AVI), approved in 2015, is an important first-line option for Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (KPC-E). Although still uncommon, resistance to CAZ-AVI has emerged and may represent a serious cause of concern. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature review of clinical and microbiological features of infections and colonisations by CAZ-AVI-resistant KPC-E, focused on the in vivo emergence of CAZ-AVI resistance in different clinical scenarios. RESULTS: Twenty-three papers were retrieved accounting for 42 patients and 57
