Identification of Burkholderia pseudomallei Near-Neighbor Species in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Identification and characterization of near-neighbor species are critical to the development of robust molecular diagnostic tools for biothreat agents. One such agent, Burkholderia pseudomallei, a soil bacterium and the causative agent of melioidosis, is lacking in this area because of its genomic diversity and widespread geographic distribution. The Burkholderia genus contains over 60 species and occupies a large range of environments including soil, plants, rhizospheres, water, animals and humans. The identification of novel species in new locations necessitates the need to identify the true

Elevated root retention of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) in coniferous trees.

For decades, the explosive RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine) has been used for military and industrial applications. Residues of RDX pollute soils in large areas globally and the persistence and high soil mobility of these residues can lead to leaching into groundwater. Dendroremediation, i.e. the long-term use of trees to clean up polluted soils, is gaining acceptance as a green and sustainable strategy. Although the coniferous tree species Norway spruce and Scots pine cover large areas of military land in Central Europe, the potential of any coniferous tree for dendroremediation

Banana-associated microbial communities in Uganda are highly diverse but dominated by Enterobacteriaceae.

Bananas are among the most widely consumed foods in the world. In Uganda, the country with the second largest banana production in the world, bananas are the most important staple food. The objective of this study was to analyze banana-associated microorganisms and to select efficient antagonists against fungal pathogens which are responsible for substantial yield losses. We studied the structure and function of microbial communities (endosphere, rhizosphere, and soil) obtained from three different traditional farms in Uganda by cultivation-independent (PCR-SSCP fingerprints of 16S rRNA/ITS ge

Organomercurials. Their formation and pathways in the environment.

The most important mercury species in the environment is monomethylmercury (MMHg), the topic of this chapter. This organic mercury compound is normally not released into the environment but formed by natural processes. Mercuric mercury (Hg²(+)) is methylated by bacteria and to a lesser extent through abiotic pathways. Highest rates of formation are found in anoxic aquatic environments. Terrestrial systems are mostly irrelevant for MMHg production and not a concern. Most productive environments are sediments, wetlands, and coastal marshes, but also the anoxic hypolimnion of lakes and anaerobic

Characterization of a phosphate solubilizing and antagonistic strain of Pseudomonas putida (B0) isolated from a sub-alpine location in the Indian Central Himalaya.

The morphological, biochemical, and physiological characteristics of a phosphate solubilizing and antagonistic bacterial strain, designated as B0, isolated from a sub-alpine Himalayan forest site have been described. The isolate is gram negative, rod shaped, 0.8 x 1.6 microm in size, and psychrotrophic in nature that could grow from 0 to 35 degrees C (optimum temp. 25 degrees C). It exhibited tolerance to a wide pH range (3-12; optimum 8.0) and salt concentration up to 4% (w/v). Although it was sensitive to kanamycin, gentamicin, and streptomycin (<10 microg mL(-1)), it showed resistance to hi

Genetic diversity and biocontrol potential of fluorescent pseudomonads producing phloroglucinols and hydrogen cyanide from Swiss soils naturally suppressive or conducive to Thielaviopsis basicola-mediated black root rot of tobacco.

Pseudomonas populations producing the biocontrol compounds 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (Phl) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) were found in the rhizosphere of tobacco both in Swiss soils suppressive to Thielaviopsis basicola and in their conducive counterparts. In this study, a collection of Phl+ HCN+Pseudomonas isolates from two suppressive and two conducive soils were used to assess whether suppressiveness could be linked to soil-specific properties of individual pseudomonads. The isolates were compared based on restriction analysis of the biocontrol genes phlD and hcnBC, enterobacterial repetitive

Deciphering of a bioactive molecule with a three-domain inhibitory activity from a halophilic bacterium Arhodomonas sp. AD133.

Pyoluteorin, a biological pesticide, is mainly produced by growth promoting rhizosphere bacteria such as Pseudomonas species showing strong antifungal and antibacterial activities. Little is known about pyoluteorin from halophiles living in hypersaline environments. The halophilic bacterium Arhodomonas sp. strain AD133, which was isolated from a hypersaline environment, demonstrated clear inhibitory activity against Bacteria, Eukaryotes and Archaea. Strain AD133 not only can inhibit halophilic archaea and bacteria that live in the same niche, but also can suppress other microorganisms, such as

Mechanistic insights into organic acid-mediated mitigation of nickel toxicity in maize (Zea mays L.) grown on mining-impacted soils.

BACKGROUND: The effects of oxalic acid, citric acid, and acetic acid (2.5 and 5 mmol) on nickel toxicity in maize (Zea mays L.) grown in nickel-contaminated soil from industrial and mining-affected sites were investigated in a pot experiment under controlled greenhouse conditions. While organic acids are commonly used as chelators to enhance metal uptake in phytoextraction strategies, this study demonstrates a contrasting mechanism: they reduced nickel bioavailability and uptake in maize, a non-hyperaccumulator crop, thereby promoting phytostabilization rather than phytoextraction. This distin

Cerium dioxide nanoparticle exposure attenuates mobility-linked antibiotic resistome signatures across the soil-lettuce continuum.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are contaminants of emerging concern in agricultural microbiomes. Their association with mobile genetic elements (MGEs) can enhance dissemination across soil-plant interfaces, creating potential environmental and food-chain exposure risks. However, how engineered nanoparticles modulate relative ARG abundance and mobility-linked resistome features in plant-associated microbiomes remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the effects of graded, experimentally elevated cerium dioxide nanoparticle (CeO2 NP) loadings in a soil-lettuce system by integrating compa
