Diseases and lesions associated with third molars. Review of 1001 cases.

This study reports on a retrospective survey of 1001 panoramic radiographs in a dental school population of persons with impacted third molars. The objective was to determine the association between pathologic conditions visible on radiographs and third molar teeth. In the series 2872 impacted third molars were examined. The most common problem seen radiolucencies. Other than caries, occurrence rates were low. Statistically significant differences in occurrences rates were seen within and between jaws for various pathologic conditions. The low rates did not offer support for the likely presenc

Surgical removal versus retention for the management of asymptomatic disease-free impacted wisdom teeth.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic removal of asymptomatic disease-free impacted wisdom teeth is surgical removal of wisdom teeth in the absence of symptoms and with no evidence of local disease. Impacted wisdom teeth may be associated with pathological changes, such as pericoronitis, root resorption, gum and alveolar bone disease (periodontitis), caries and the development of cysts and tumours. When surgical removal is carried out in older people, the risk of postoperative complications, pain and discomfort is increased. Other reasons to justify prophylactic removal of asymptomatic disease-free impacte

Effect of Combined CO₂ Laser Irradiation and Sodium Fluoride Varnish on Enamel Surface Morphology and Surface Elemental Composition: An In Vitro Split-Tooth Study.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride administration plays a critical role in the management and prophylaxis of dental caries. Research indicates that laser irradiation can enhance the uptake of fluoride into dental enamel, an effect that is particularly pronounced when used as an adjunct to topical fluoride treatments. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of CO 2 laser irradiation on fluoride uptake in the enamel of permanent teeth. METHODS: Six human upper premolars, extracted for orthodontic reasons, were selected for this study. The roots were separated from the crowns, and each crown was then s

Vital pulp therapy with new materials for primary teeth: new directions and treatment perspectives.

Vital pulp therapy aims to treat reversible pulpal injury and includes 2 therapeutic approaches: (1) indirect pulp treatment for deep dentinal cavities and (2) direct pulp capping or pulpotomy in cases of pulp exposure. Indirect pulp treatment is recommended as the most appropriate procedure for treating primary teeth with deep caries and reversible pulp inflammation, provided that this diagnosis is based on a good history, a proper clinical and radiographic examination, and that the tooth has been sealed with a leakage-free restoration. Formocresol has been a popular pulpotomy medicament in t

[Dental care of patients with leukemia].

Leukemias include a variety of acute and chronic malignant hematological diseases that require antineoplastic chemotherapy. Hematological stem cell transplantation allows an aggressive chemotherapy during which patients suffer from severe immunosuppression. Oral infections may cause serious complications during this immunosuppression. Therefore, professional diagnosis and elimination of oral infection foci must be carried out as early as possible before such treatment. Aggressive chemotherapy causes hyposalivation and as a consequence an increased risk for oral hard and soft tissue diseases. A

From cultural dispositions to biological dimensions: a narrative review on the synergy between oral health and vitamin D through the lens of Indian habitus.

Oral health is intricately related to systemic health, with new worldwide research demonstrating vitamin D's critical role in sustaining dental and periodontal health. Vitamin D regulates calcium and phosphate metabolism, which is required for the formation and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones. According to research, vitamin D deficiency may contribute to the etiology of periodontal disease by decreasing the host immune response, making it more susceptible to infections like gingivitis and periodontitis. Oral health in India is a tapestry of traditional practices, socioeconomic factors,

Atypical antipsychotics olanzapine and clozapine increase bone loss in female rats with experimental periodontitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Periodontitis is a highly prevalent disease in psychiatric patients, including those undergoing symptomatic treatment with second-generation antipsychotics. Some of these drugs, such as clozapine (CLO) and olanzapine (OLA), have prominent metabolic effects such as weight gain, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia, which are risk factors for periodontitis. In addition to the metabolic effects, there are reports of changes in salivary flow, gingival bleeding, and caries. In this context, we aimed to evaluate if the metabolic effects of OLA and CLO alter periodontal paramete

Salivary amylase - The enzyme of unspecialized euryphagous animals.

INTRODUCTION: Alpha-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1) is the most abundant enzyme in the saliva of man and of several vertebrates. In humans, salivary amylase is mainly formed in the parotid gland; its activity is of high inter-individual and intra-individual variability. The physiological functions of α-amylase have not yet been explored completely. It is well known that the enzyme cleaves the α-(1,4)-glycosidic bonds of polysaccharides. Furthermore it plays an important role in initial bioadhesion in man, facilitating carbohydrate metabolism and bacterial adherence at the tooth surface and therewith cari
