Urinary tract infections (UTIs) affect a broad patient population and inflict a substantial financial burden on the U.S. healthcare system. While uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) causes the majority of cases, other pathogens are emerging. Patient data from our healthcare system in the Gulf Coast region of Alabama revealed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa accounted for 4.0% of UTI cases, roughly double the national average, prompting further investigation into this historically understudied uropathogen. Here, we performed whole-genome sequencing and phenotypic assays on 55 urinary P. aeruginosa

BACKGROUND: Stenotrophomonas spp. are increasingly recognized opportunistic pathogens characterized by intrinsic multidrug resistance. Despite recent taxonomic reclassification and the delineation of new species within the S. maltophilia complex (Smc), routine diagnostics often misidentify these species, and their distinctive antibiotic resistance traits and genetic makeup remain underexplored. We aimed to characterize the phylogenomic diversity, genotypic and phenotypic antibiotic resistance traits, virulence markers and horizontally transferrable elements in a large national cohort of clinic

Background: Laying hens, which are widely utilized for consumption and export in various regions, experience prolonged antibiotic exposure due to their longer lifespan, increasing the risk of antibiotic resistance and impacting the microbial environment of poultry slaughterhouses. Given the significance of extended-spectrum-β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli in food safety, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of ESBL genes in E. coli isolated from a laying hen slaughterhouse in Konya, Turkey. Methods: Sampling was conducted using a convenient sampling approach, and a tota

Aeromonas spp. are gram-negative bacilli of the Gammaproteobacteria class and Aeromonadaceae family. These bacteria are a public health challenge, particularly in South America. They harbor chromosomal β-lactamases belonging to classes B, C, and D, whose presence varies among species. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of piperacillin-tazobactam (PTZ) and cefotaxime (CTX) for clinical strains of Aeromonas spp. A secondary objective was to assess the resistance profile of these strains to cefepime (FEP), aztreonam (AZT), ciprofloxacin (CIP),

Background: Combination therapy with antibiotics and phages has been suggested to increase the antibacterial activity of both antibiotics and phages. We tested the in vitro activity of five antibiotics belonging to different classes in combination with lytic bacteriophages against multidrug-resistant metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. Material/Methods: A total of 10 non-repetitive well-characterized MBL-producing P. aeruginosa isolates (5 NDM, 5 VIM) co-resistant to aminoglycosides and quinolones were used. Phage-antibiotic interactions were assessed using an

INTRODUCTION: Extensively drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (XDR-PA) is a growing concern due to its increasing incidence, limited therapeutic options, limited data on the optimal treatment, and high mortality rates. The study aimed to characterize the population, the outcome and the microbiological characteristics of XDR-PA identified in a Portuguese university hospital center.
METHODS: All XDR-PA isolates between January 2019 and December 2021 were identified. XDR-PA was defined as resistance to piperacillin-tazobactam, third and fourth generation cephalosporins, carbapenems, aminoglyco

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections involving Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) with difficult-to-treat resistance (DTR) phenotype are associated with impaired patient-centered outcomes and poses daily therapeutic challenges in most of intensive care units worldwide. Over the recent years, four innovative β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor (BL/BLI) combinations (ceftolozane-tazobactam, ceftazidime-avibactam, imipenem-relebactam and meropenem-vaborbactam) and a new siderophore cephalosporin (cefiderocol) have been approved for the treatment of certain DTR-GNB infections. Recently, several β-lactam (BL)/β-lactamase inhibitor (BLI) combinations have entered clinical testing or have been marketed for use, but limited direct comparative studies of their in vitro activity exist. Xeruborbactam (XER, also known as QPX7728), which is undergoing clinical development, is a cyclic boronate BLI with potent inhibitory activity against serine (serine β-lactamase) and metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs). The objectives of this study were (i) to compare the potency and spectrum of β-lactamase inhibition by various BLIs in biochemical assays using purified β-lactamases and in microbio

BACKGROUND: Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common contagion among men and women with the incidence relatively higher among women due to their differing anatomy. An understanding of the kind of pathogens implicated in urinary tract infections as well as antibiotic susceptibility profiling may help the clinician make rationally correct empirical choice in their treatment.
OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at determining the type and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of bacterial uropathogens isolated from female patients attending Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUT

BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria coexpressing AmpC type β-lactamase (ACBL) are associated with the laboratory issue of false susceptibility to third-generation cephalosporins. This study was to evaluate laboratory tests and clinical significance of bacteremic isolates of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae with both ESBL and ACBL [dual-type lactamases (DTL)].
METHODS: From 2006 to 2009, 78 E coli and 12 pneumoniae bacteremic isolates with reduced susceptibility to cefotaxime (CTX) or ceftazidime (CAZ) were identified and relevant patients' data were c

UNLABELLED: Infections in the diabetic population can be severe and life threatning at least for two reasons: clinical signs are often torpid, masqued by chronical complications of diabetes leading to late recognition and medical adresability and also because of the inability to control established infection due to complex cell-mediated and humoral immunity deffects. The aim of the study was to evaluate the etiology, clinical features and outcome in diabetic patients with invazive disease.

BACKGROUND: Resistance to antimicrobial agents of pathogenic bacteria has become a major problem in routine medical practices. Carbapenem resistance has long been increasing. The production of carbapenem- hydrolysing β-lactamases (carbapenamases), which include NDM, KPC, OXA-48, IMP-1 and VIM is the most common mechanism.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56 years old male presented with fever and mental changes with progressively decreasing sensorium for the last 3 days. He was admitted to Intensive care unit (ICU) with a diagnosis of meningoencephalitis. On day seven, he developed ventilator associated

To determine whether confirmatory tests for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production in Escherichia coli are necessary, we selected 131 E. coli isolates that met the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) screening criteria for potential ESBL production from the Project ICARE (Intensive Care Antimicrobial Resistance Epidemiology) strain collection. For all 131 isolates, the broth microdilution (BMD) MIC of at least one extended-spectrum cephalosporin was >/=2 micro g/ml. For 21 of 131 (16%) isolates, the ESBL confirmatory test was positive; i.e., the BMD MICs of

BACKGROUND: Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis) is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for various community-acquired and nosocomial infections, particularly urinary tract infections (UTIs). Rising resistance to broad-spectrum antibiotics, including carbapenems, is narrowing treatment options and poses a major public health concern. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of P. mirabilis isolates obtained from UTI patients. Then, to assess the molecular determinants of carbapenem-resistant isolates with a focus on the role of integrons in resistance gene dissem

OBJECTIVE: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) is a major public health concern associated with high mortality. The Surviving Sepsis Guidelines recommend administering antibiotics within three hours after sepsis identified, thus, we aimed to optimize the procedure and reduce the turnaround time for pathogen identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study on positive blood culture flagged within 8 h by the BacT/Alert 3D system between November 2023 and July 2024. We enrolled single bacterial bloodstream infection by both the Gram staining and Liu’s s

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) infections represent a critical global health threat with limited therapeutic options and high mortality rates. Novel β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor (BL/BLI) combinations have emerged, but their comparative impact on survival versus best available therapy (BAT) remains to be comprehensively assessed. This systematic review evaluates the mechanistic, microbiological, and genetic factors affecting treatment success.
METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational reports published up to December 2025 were included

Introduction Orthopaedic infections are one of the common causes of high morbidity and are challenging complications to treat. It includes non-healing ulcers, osteomyelitis, diabetic foot, compound fractures, and SSIs (surgical site infections), such as implant-associated infections and prosthetic joint infections. The most commonly associated organisms include Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas, Proteus, and Enterococcus species. However, most of the bacterial isolates exhibit resistance to commonly used antibiotics. Moreover, the spectrum of microbial flora and the antibiot
