Child Sexual Abuse as a Predictor of Multiple Forms of Victimization Among Transgender Adults in the United States.

Transgender people disproportionately experience high rates of violence across multiple contexts throughout the life course compared to cisgender individuals. Among the cisgender population, child sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with multiple forms of victimization; however, these associations have not been examined among transgender adults. This study evaluated whether transgender adults who have experienced CSA were more likely to report specific forms of victimization and cumulative experiences across types of violence (i.e., more than one type of maltreatment). We conducted a cross-sectio

Pediatric Health and System Impacts of Mass Incarceration, 2009-2020: A Matched Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: The US has the highest incarceration rate in the world; incarceration's direct and indirect toll on the health and health care use of youth is rarely investigated. We sought to compare the health of youth with known personal or family justice involvement and a matched cohort of youth without known personal/family justice involvement. METHODS: A cross-sectional matched parallel cohort study was conducted. We queried electronic health records on youth (<21 years) with a visit in a large Midwestern pediatric hospital-based institution from January 2009 to December 2020. Youth were loc

Sex Assigned at Birth Ratio Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Adolescents in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Representatives of some pediatric gender clinics have reported an increase in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adolescents presenting for care who were assigned female sex at birth (AFAB) relative to those assigned male sex at birth (AMAB). These data have been used to suggest that youth come to identify as TGD because of "social contagion," with the underlying assumption that AFAB youth are uniquely vulnerable to this hypothesized phenomenon. Reported changes in the AMAB:AFAB ratio have been cited in recent legislative debates regarding the criminalization of gender-affirming m

Recovery from past suicide attempts: Correlates of time since the last attempt in a national sample of US adults.

BACKGROUND: This study takes a lifetime perspective on suicide attempts and examines correlates of years since the last attempt as a potential proxy for recovery from suicidality. METHODS: Data from 36,309 adults in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III were used to identify 1,924 respondents (5.3%) who reported a lifetime suicide attempt. Measures included socio-demographics, behavioral factors, and DSM-5 diagnoses, as well as the age at first attempt. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to adjust for potentially confounding effects of age and to i

The association between adverse childhood experiences and mental health problems in young offenders.

High rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs, e.g., abuse and neglect) have been found in young offenders. Furthermore, ACEs seem to increase the risk of developing relevant mental health problems, in non-offending juveniles and adults. However, this association has only seldomly been addressed in offending juveniles and young adults. The present study aimed at evaluating the prevalence of ACEs and mental health problems as well as their association within a sample of male and female young offenders. Altogether, 161 adolescent and young adult offenders (16.8% females) from the youth deten

Criminal Activity or Treatable Health Condition? News Media Framing of Opioid Analgesic Abuse in the United States, 1998-2012.

OBJECTIVE: Opioid analgesic abuse is a complex and relatively new public health problem, and to date little is known about how the news media frame the issue. METHODS: To better understand how this issue has been framed in public discourse, an analysis was conducted of the volume and content of news media coverage of opioid analgesic abuse over a 15-year period from 1998 to 2012 (N=673 news stories). A 70-item structured coding instrument was used to measure items in four domains that prior research suggests can influence public attitudes about health and social issues: causes, solutions, and

Six-month follow-up study of ultrarapid opiate detoxification with naltrexone.

BACKGROUND: Illicit opiate use has an increasing incidence and prevalence, which increases mortality and morbidity, marginalization, and criminal behaviors, and causes major adverse effects on society. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate and follow the outcome of patients who underwent ultrarapid opiate detoxification (UROD) prospectively. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this randomized clinical trial, 64 patients who underwent UROD were evaluated. The opiate antagonist regimen of naloxone was administered intravenously under general anesthesia, and detoxification was confirmed by naloxone

Gender differences in emotional risk for self- and other-directed violence among externalizing adults.

OBJECTIVE: Women and men generally differ in how frequently they engage in other- and self-directed physical violence and may show distinct emotional risk factors for engagement in these high-impact behaviors. To inform this area, we investigated gender differences in the relationship of emotional tendencies (i.e., anger, hostility, and anhedonic depression) that may represent risk for other-directed violence (i.e., physical fighting, attacking others unprovoked) and self-directed violence (i.e., self-injury, suicide attempts). METHOD: The ethnically diverse sample consisted of 372 adults (25

An evaluation of drug treatments for adolescents in 4 US cities.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about outcomes of community-based treatment programs for adolescents with drug problems. METHODS: We studied 1167 adolescents (age range, 11-18 years; 368 females, 799 males) from 4 US cities (Pittsburgh, Pa; Minneapolis, Minn; Chicago, Ill; and Portland, Ore) using a naturalistic, nonexperimental evaluation design. These adolescents were consecutive admissions during the period from 1993 to 1995 at 23 community-based treatment programs in the Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Studies for Adolescents. Included were 418 admissions to 8 residential programs, 292 admission

Availability of opioid agonist treatment and critical incidents in Forensic Clinics for Dependency Diseases in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of substance use disorders, especially opioid use disorders, is high in patients admitted into forensic psychiatric settings. Opioid agonist treatment is a safe, well-established, and effective treatment option for patients that suffer from opioid dependence. Surprisingly, data on the availability and practice of opioid agonist treatment (OAT) options in German Forensic Clinics for Dependency Diseases is rare. Furthermore, essential data on the prevalence of critical incidents such as violent behavior, relapse, or escape from the clinic are missing for this particular tr

Housing Instability as a Barrier to HIV Viral Suppression: Evidence from a U.S. Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Housing instability and homelessness remain pervasive structural determinants of poor HIV outcomes in the United States. People living with HIV (PLWH) who experience homelessness face intersecting barriers, including stigma, behavioral comorbidities, and fragmented care systems, that undermine antiretroviral therapy adherence and viral suppression (VS). To quantify the impact of homelessness on viral suppression, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of U.S.-based studies published from 2014 to 2024. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science were searche

Urban rape survivors: characteristics and prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus and other sexually transmitted infections. Multicenter Crack Cocaine and HIV Infection Study Team.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of recent rape, the characteristics or recent rape survivors, and the seroprevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis, and genital herpes (HSV-2) among recent rape survivors. METHODS: We surveyed women 18-29 years old who were recruited from places unassociated with medical or drug treatment or the criminal justice system in three urban communities where illicit drug use is common. We compared characteristics and HIV, syphilis, and HSV-2 seroprevalence of women who reported recent rape with those of women who denied recent rape. RESULTS:

Increases in striatal response to reward anticipation relate to reductions in impulsivity in women with substance use disorders.

Impulsivity and neural reward reactivity are considered important factors in the development and maintenance of substance use disorders (SUDs) and may be predictive of treatment response. However, relationships between treatment response, impulsivity, and reward reactivity are understudied in women with SUDs. Our study aimed to characterize relationships between neural responses to reward anticipation and changes in behavioral and clinical outcomes following treatment. In a sample of adult women (N = 83) who completed a criminal diversion program that included comprehensive treatment for SUDs,

Lifetime Contacts with Child Welfare Services among Children and Adolescents with ADHD: A Population-Based Registry Study.

Children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and their parents often face challenges that may lead to contact with child welfare services (CWS). However, there is a lack of studies addressing this issue. This study assessed the rate and association between ADHD and different types of CWS contact compared to the general population. We also examined whether individual and parental characteristics were associated with CWS contact among children and adolescents with ADHD. We employed a longitudinal research design and examined an 18-year age trajectory for a cohort

Racism and health: Examining pathways influencing health outcomes among justice-involved and nonjustice-involved Black and Latine individuals.

The pervasive nature of racism at interpersonal and structural levels remains a significant public health threat, as it contributes to adverse mental and behavioral health outcomes. The biopsychosocial model of racism underscores physiological, cognitive, and emotional mechanisms that influence health outcomes; however, less is known about the distinct mechanisms through which experiences of racism shape health outcomes among Black and Latine individuals who face cumulative disadvantage because of criminal legal system involvement. Black and Latine participants (N = 828; justice involved, n =

Equity in law enforcement actions following a school threat assessment.

Objective: Behavioral threat assessment and management (BTAM) is a form of violence risk assessment that has been widely adopted in U.S. public schools. However, there are concerns that the involvement of law enforcement officers in schools on BTAM teams could lead to criminalization of student misbehavior and exacerbate disparities in arrests for students of color and students with disabilities. This study investigated school-based arrests, court charges, and incarcerations for a sample of 18,411 Florida students in 1,646 schools who received a threat assessment using the Comprehensive School

Homelessness Following Jail Exit Among Previously Housed Individuals.

Incarceration is a recognized risk factor for homelessness. However, most research focuses on the relationship between homelessness and prison incarceration. Jail incarceration is more common compared to prison incarceration, but little data exists on its impact on housing. The objective of this study is to examine the occurrence of housing loss after jail incarceration among individuals without prior evidence of homelessness and the associated risk of reincarceration. In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we identified adults without evidence of homelessness who became unhoused within

Patterns of Socioeconomic Marginalization among People Who Use Drugs: A Gender-Stratified Repeated Measures Latent Class Analysis.

Socioeconomic factors are important correlates of drug use behaviors and health-related outcomes in people who use drugs (PWUD) residing in urban areas. However, less is known about the complex overlapping nature of socioeconomic conditions and their association with a range of individual, drug use, and health-related factors in men and women who use drugs. Data were obtained from two community-recruited prospective cohorts of PWUD. Using a gender-stratified approach, we conducted repeated measures latent class analyses (RMLCA) to identify discrete latent socioeconomic subgroups. Multivariable

A Systematic Review of the Existing Evidence on Early Year Interventions for Trauma and Violence Prevention.

Exposure to violence in early childhood is considered a public health issue and is a significant predictor of becoming a victim or perpetrator of violence later in life. There has been a significant increase in violence intervention and prevention programs that are available for children and young people; however, there are few evidence-based interventions for younger children. This review systematically explores the existing impact evidence for available intervention and prevention programs targeted at young children (ages 3-8) across the United States and United Kingdom. It also explores the
