Non-invasive prediction of the first ventilatory threshold in Chinese patients with chronic heart failure for personalized exercise prescription.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop non-invasive prediction models for the first ventilatory threshold (VT1) in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), to address the inaccuracy of guideline-recommended, percentage-based exercise intensity prescriptions (40%-69% peak VO2, 55%-75% peak HR) and the limited accessibility of gold-standard cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). METHODS: We analyzed 225 CHF patients who underwent standardized CPET. Using multivariate linear regression with ten-fold cross-validation, we developed prediction models for VT1 oxygen consumption (VO2) and heart rat

Comparison between methods of vascular calibre characterization and measurement protocols: Influence of vessels number considered.

In recent years, retinal vascular calibre has emerged as an important non-invasive biomarker of microvascular health, widely used in ophthalmology for the detection and monitoring of various ocular diseases and has attracted growing interest in the study of various systemic diseases. However, significant methodological questions remain regarding the precise number of vessels to include in the calculation, as well as the agreement between the two most widely used formulas for estimating the retinal vascular calibre: the Parr-Hubbard formula and the Knudtson formula. The aim of this study is to

Characterisation of a large, single-centre cohort of patients with Becker muscular dystrophy to inform standardised care guidelines.

AIMS: This retrospective, cross-sectional study aimed to characterise a large cohort of paediatric and adult patients with Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) to inform clinical care. RESULTS: The analysis included data from 163 male patients with genetically confirmed BMD followed up at a highly specialised neuromuscular centre between 1982 and 2023. The mean age at last neuromuscular assessment was 33.2 years (range 1.4-86.3). Large deletions in the DMD gene were the most common variants (78% of cases), followed by large duplications and small variants, each accounting for 11% of cases. BMD dia

Enriched lung cancer classification approach using an optimized hybrid deep learning approach.

Lung cancer remains one of the deadliest diseases in the world and early detection is critical to enhancing survival rates. With traditional diagnostic techniques - CT scans and chest X-rays - an invasive procedure must be performed and, in some cases, it relies on expert interpretation. Whether benign or malignant, the similarities in visual characteristics of nodules leads to ambiguity and makes for a difficult case which calls for the development of automatic lung cancer classification framework such as the one we proposed, which incorporates Deep Learning (DL) methods and uses a rigourous

An accuracy assessment of SlicerAutoscoperM - software for tracking skeletal structures in multi-plane videoradiography datasets.

Tracking skeletal joint kinematics in vivo with biplane videoradiography (BVR) can rigorously address a range of important questions in musculoskeletal research. Here we report on SlicerAutoscoperM (SAM), an upgrade of the markerless tracking software (Autoscoper) and its migration into the established computing environment of 3DSlicer and addition of a comprehensive pre-processing module to provide a standardized workflow. We present the accuracy and agreement in tracking four skeletal joints by four research groups. Accuracy was assessed by comparing marker-generated and SAM kinematics for b

Enhancing precision in effective regurgitant orifice area estimation by transthoracic echocardiography for functional mitral regurgitation using computational fluid dynamics.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to identify factors influencing the accuracy of the hemispherical proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) method in calculating the effective regurgitant orifice area (EROA) for patients with functional mitral regurgitation (FMR). Ninety-nine CFD models were constructed to investigate the impact of regurgitant orifice shape and leaflet tethering on the EROA calculation using the PISA method. The correction factors for regurgitation orifice shape (CFs) and for leaflet tethering (CFt) were derived by comparing the 2D PISA method and the actual orifice

Assessing Periodontal Health in Tobacco Users: A Salivary Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The risk of periodontal disease is considered to be high among tobacco users compared to those not consuming tobacco in any form. A rise in salivary enzyme levels reflects the destruction of healthy tissues, making it a potential clinical biomarker. Thus, the aim was to assess periodontal health and examine salivary enzyme levels and their correlation with tobacco use. METHODS: Unstimulated saliva was collected using a standard protocol from 128 individuals who visited the outpatient department (OPD) of a dental hospital, divided into four groups. Clinical assessment was done usin

Non-invasive hemoglobin estimation from conjunctival images using deep learning.

Hemoglobin, a crucial protein found in erythrocytes, transports oxygen throughout the body. Deviations from optimal hemoglobin levels in the blood are linked to medical conditions, serving as diagnostic markers for certain diseases. The hemoglobin level is usually measured invasively with different devices using the blood sample. In the physical interpretation, some signs are traditionally used. These signs are the palms, face, nail beds, pallor of the conjunctiva, and palmar wrinkles. Studies have shown that conjunctival pallor can yield more effective results in detecting anemia than the pal

Mid-esophageal bicaval versus short-axis view of interatrial septum in two-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography for diagnosis and measurement of atrial septal pouches.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that the left-sided septal pouch (SP) may increase the risk of cryptogenic stroke and act as an arrhythmogenic substrate. The aim of this study was to compare two transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) projections of the interventricular septum: mid-esophageal bicaval and short-axis views toward evaluating their ability to detect SPs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 146 patients with both bicaval and short-axis TEE views were included in this study. The presence of SPs was determined, and they were evaluated for morphology. RESULTS: Irrespective of TEE pr

Comparison of validity, repeatability and reproducibility of the Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) between digital and conventional study models.

INTRODUCTION: The validity, reliability and inter-method agreement of Peer Assessment Scores (PAR) from acrylic models and their digital analogues were assessed. METHOD: Ten models of different occlusions were digitised, using a 3 Shape R700 laser scanner (Copenhagen, Denmark). Each set of models was conventionally and digitally PAR-scored twice in random order by 10 examiners. The minimum time between repeat measurements was two weeks. The repeatability was assessed by applying Carstensen's analysis. Inter-method agreement (IEMA) was assessed by Carstensen's limit of agreement (LOA). RESULT
