Histogenesis of central lung cancer: cytological investigation.

OBJECTIVES: Although relapsing polychondritis (RP) is considered as an immune-mediated systemic disease, the levels of peripheral lymphocyte subpopulations are rarely studied in patients with RP. In this study, we focused on changes of peripheral CD4+T cell subsets in patients with RP. METHODS: Absolute numbers and percentages of CD4+T cell subsets including helper T(Th)1, Th2, Th17 cells and regulatory T (Treg) cells in peripheral blood (PB) from 19 RP patients, healthy controls and RA patients respectively were assessed by flow cytometry combined a microbead-based single-platform method. Reclassifying Idiopathic Uveitis: Lessons From a Tertiary Uveitis Center.

PURPOSE: Idiopathic uveitis is frequently the most common diagnosis in series from uveitis clinics. This study sought to determine the percentage of patients initially diagnosed as idiopathic, noninfectious uveitis referred to a tertiary uveitis center who were subsequently found to have an identifiable cause of uveitis. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: We performed a computerized database analysis of 179 consecutive patients who were referred to our practice with the diagnosis of idiopathic, noninfectious uveitis between 2008 and 2016. Patients were evaluated by a thorough histor

Biologics in myelodysplastic syndrome-related systemic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases: French multicenter retrospective study of 29 patients.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases (SIADs) associated with myelodysplastic syndromes are often difficult to treat. Corticosteroids are efficient but only usually at high doses. The use of biologics needs to be specified. METHODS: In a French multicenter retrospective study, we analyzed the efficacy and safety of biologics (tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α] antagonists, tocilizumab, rituximab and anakinra) for SIADs associated with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs). Clinical, biological and overall treatment responses were evaluated. When several lines of treatment were use

HLA class II transgenic mice mimic human inflammatory diseases.

Population studies have shown that among all the genetic factors linked with autoimmune disease development, MHC class II genes on chromosome 6 accounts for majority of familial clustering in the common autoimmune diseases. Despite the highly polymorphic nature of HLA class II genes, majority of autoimmune diseases are linked to a limited set of class II-DR or -DQ alleles. Thus a more detailed study of these HLA-DR and -DQ alleles were needed to understand their role in genetic predisposition and pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. Although in vitro studies using class-II restricted CD4 T cel

Autologous stem cell transplantation of treatment-resistant systemic vasculitis--a single center experience and review of the literature.

AIMS: Autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (autoPBSCT) is increasingly and successfully applied to patients with treatment-resistant autoimmune diseases, mainly multiple sclerosis and systemic sclerosis, but also juvenile idiopathic arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. We intended to analyze the effects of autoPBSCT in patients with treatment-resistant systemic vasculitis by analyzing the outcome of 4 patients from our own hospital, and comparing them to cases reported in the literature. METHODS: 4 patients with treatment-resistant vasculitis (Wegener granulomatosis, C

Monoclonal autoantibodies from patients with autoimmune diseases: specificity, affinity and crossreactivity of MAbs binding to cytoskeletal and nucleolar epitopes, cartilage antigens and mycobacterial heat-shock protein 60.

Serum autoantibodies produce typical immunofluorescence staining patterns on HEp-2 cells, which are frequently used for diagnostic purposes. These include antibodies recognizing cytoskeletal and nuclear epitopes. The detailed analysis of human monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) should help to understand which antigens or autoantigens were involved in the generation of these immune responses. Here, three MAbs are described staining HEp-2 cells in a characteristic pattern. They were derived from peripheral blood B cells of two patients with rheumatic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis and relapsing polych

Epitope-specific recognition of type II collagen by rheumatoid arthritis antibodies is shared with recognition by antibodies that are arthritogenic in collagen-induced arthritis in the mouse.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the fine specificity of IgG autoantibodies in sera from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients for type II collagen (CII) epitopes that are arthritogenic in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), a relevant murine model of RA. METHODS: For enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis of conformation-dependent autoantibody binding, recombinant chimeric collagens that harbor the respective CII epitopes as an insertion within the frame of a constant type X collagen triple helix were constructed. In addition, synthetic peptides mimicking the native collagen structures were appl

Presence of antinucleosome autoantibodies in a restricted set of connective tissue diseases: antinucleosome antibodies of the IgG3 subclass are markers of renal pathogenicity in systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: To study the frequency and disease specificity of antinucleosome antibody reactivity in diverse connective tissue diseases (CTD), and to determine factors, such as antibody subclass, that may influence the pathogenicity of these antibodies in relation to disease activity. METHODS: IgG and IgM antinucleosome activities on nucleosome core particles from 496 patients with 13 different CTD and 100 patients with hepatitis C were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Of the patients with CTD, 120 had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 37 had scleroderma (systemic sclero

Adoptive Cellular Gene Therapy for the Treatment of Experimental Autoimmune Polychondritis Ear Disease.

In the past, the clinical therapy for autoimmune diseases, such as autoimmune polychondritis ear disease, was mostly limited to nonspecific immunosuppressive agents, which could lead to variable responses. Currently, gene therapy aims at achieving higher specificity and less adverse effects. This concept utilizes the adoptive transfer of autologous T cells that have been retrovirally transduced ex vivo to express and deliver immunoregulatory gene products to sites of autoimmune inflammation. In the animal model of collagen-induced autoimmune polychondritis ear disease (CIAPED), the adoptive tr

Aseptic abscesses: a study of 30 patients with or without inflammatory bowel disease and review of the literature.

Aseptic abscesses (AA) are characterized by deep, sterile, round lesions consisting of neutrophil that do not respond to antibiotics but improve dramatically with corticosteroids. We report the clinical, laboratory, and radiologic characteristics and the associated conditions of 29 patients from the French Register on AA plus 1 patient from the Netherlands. The mean age of patients at AA diagnosis was 29 years (SD = 14). The main clinical manifestations of AA were fever (90%), abdominal pain (67%), and weight loss (50%). Duration of symptoms was 4.7 months on average until abscesses were discov

[Aortitis].

Aortitis is a rare disease entity of unknown prevalence. Primary aortitis mainly affects the thoracic aorta. They are most often diagnosed on imaging by grade III 18-FDG uptake of the aortic wall on PET, or by circumferential thickening>2.2mm on CT or MRI with late-stage contrast. More rarely, aortitis is histologically proven, as in some cases of clinically isolated aortitis discovered after planned aortic aneurysm surgery or during aortic dissection surgery. The most common histological types are granulomatous/giant cell or lymphoplasmacytic. Clinical signs associated with aortitis are often

Clinico-pathological profile and comparative study of conservative versus surgical deroofing as an effective technique in management of pseudocyst of pinna.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: An auricular pseudocyst is not uncommon in routine ENT clinical practice, it occurs when fluid accumulates between the intracartilaginous spaces of the auricle. Many treatment modalities have been proposed such as incision and drainage of the cyst, simple needle aspiration, tight bandaging with dental rolls, however recurrence and cosmetic problems are still noted in some cases. The aim of this article was to discuss our experience of surgical treatment of intractable auricular pseudocysts with marsupialisation, deroofing and anterior cartilage leaflet removal along

The misdiagnosis of superficial thrombophlebitis as cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa: features of the internal elastic lamina and the compact concentric muscular layer as diagnostic pitfalls.

The presence of an internal elastic lamina and a compact concentric muscular layer are the cardinal histologic clues for distinguishing a small muscular artery from small muscular vein. However, the subcutaneous muscular veins in the lower legs usually have thick muscular layers with the proliferation of concentric intimal elastic fibers, which resembles the internal elastic lamina of an artery. Moreover, vertical biopsy specimens of the muscular veins can reveal a compact concentric muscular layer with a round luminal appearance, which also resembles the muscular layer in an artery. As these

Evaluation of children with myelodysplastic syndrome: importance of extramedullary disease as a presenting symptom.

Thirty-three children diagnosed with primary myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in a single institution over an 8 year period were evaluated with special emphasis on children who presented with extramedullary disease (EMD). EMD was present at diagnosis in 12 (36%) of the 33 children with MDS. Three patients with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) and 2 patients with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) presented with pleural effusion. Pericardial effusion was present in 3 of these patients, two of whom also had thrombosis. Pyoderma gangrenosum, relapsing polychondritis were the initial find
