Decoding heavy metal tolerance in rice: Nucleic acid-based technologies shaping global food security.

Global rice production is critically threatened by heavy metal contamination, particularly cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As), which compromises yield, diminishes grain nutritional quality, and exposes billions of consumers to nephrotoxic and carcinogenic risks. Conventional remediation strategies (soil amendments, water management, phytoremediation) are prohibitively expensive, temporally protracted, and fundamentally reactive, while conventional breeding is constrained by linkage drag, polygenic trait architecture, and absence of natural alleles that restrict toxic metal uptake from essential min

Environmental and genetic differentiation underlies divergence in phosphorus-acquisition strategies of Embothrium coccineum cultivated on volcanic substrates of contrasting age.

Phosphorus (P) limitation in volcanic soils imposes strong selective pressure on root traits that regulate nutrient acquisition, carbon allocation, and rhizosphere biochemical modification. In Proteaceae, P acquisition is often mediated by cluster roots and carboxylate exudation, yet it remains unclear whether environmentally and genetically differentiated populations within a species rely on contrasting structural and biochemical strategies. We tested whether Embothrium coccineum populations from contrasting environments differ genetically and in P-acquisition traits using two complementary a

Climate Change Impacts on Plant-Parasitic Nematodes in Agroecosystems.

Climate change significantly impacts agricultural ecosystems through rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, increasing atmospheric CO2 levels, and more frequent extreme weather events. These environmental changes have a pronounced effect on plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs; phylum Nematoda), which cause serious crop losses on a global scale. This review aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of current knowledge on how major climate change drivers influence the biology, population dynamics, host-plant interactions, and geographic distribution of PPNs in agricultural systems.

Growth form controls the seasonal stability of nutrient-pollution mitigation by submerged macrophytes in shallow lakes.

Submerged macrophyte restoration is widely used to mitigate nutrient pollution in eutrophic shallow lakes, yet its effectiveness is often evaluated during peak plant growth rather than across the full growing season. This creates uncertainty about whether restored clear-water conditions can persist during late-season plant decline. Here, a mesocosm experiment compared a canopy-forming species, Hydrilla verticillata, with a rosette-forming species, Vallisneria natans, at vigorous- and late-growth stages. We measured overlying-water quality, sediment properties, extracellular enzyme activities,

Multiomics analysis reveals flavonoid accumulation and biosynthesis across different cultivation years and localities of Gongronemopsis tenacissima (Dai-Bai-Jie).

BACKGROUND: The dried root of Gongronemopsis tenacissima (Roxb.) S. Reuss, Liede & Meve, traditionally known as Dai-Bai-Jie, is a medicinal plant used by the Dai ethnic group, primarily for detoxification. Due to extensive use, wild resources have become increasingly scarce, prompting domestication efforts in China. However, the accumulation patterns of secondary metabolites-particularly flavonoids, the main detoxifying components-and their biosynthetic mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: This study investigated differences in flavonoid accumulation and transcriptional regulation in Dai-Bai-J

Evaluating the efficacy and molecular mechanisms of the effects of Trichoderma harzianum T15 against Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.

BACKGROUND: Pine wilt disease, caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, devastates pine ecosystems. As a well-known biocontrol fungus, Trichoderma harzianum has been shown to exhibit broad-spectrum antagonistic effects against multiple pathogens and nematodes. In this study, we employed morphological, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and RNA-sequencing analyses to systematically evaluate its efficacy against Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. These findings clarify the biocontrol potential of T. harzianum and support developing new agents

Biocontrol of Rice Seed-Associated Fungal Pathogens Using Green Synthesis Approaches.

Rice (Oryza sativa) is a major cereal crop that balances the food demand of the worldwide population. The crop quality drops daily due to their exposure to biotic and abiotic stresses, especially pathogens. It needs to be improved to maintain the consumption level to cope with increasing population demands for food. The current study was designed to analyze the comparison of the effects of green synthesis approaches on pathogens associated with rice seeds. In this study, essential oils were extracted from Cymbopogon citratus, Thymus vulgaris, and Origanum vulgaris medicinal plants and used as

Acinetobacter calcoaceticus CSY-P13 Mitigates Stress of Ferulic and p-Hydroxybenzoic Acids in Cucumber by Affecting Antioxidant Enzyme Activity and Soil Bacterial Community.

Ferulic acid (FA) and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) are main phenolic compounds accumulated in rhizosphere of continuously cropped cucumber, causing stress in plants. Microbial degradation of a mixture of FA and PHBA is not well understood in soil. We isolated a strain CSY-P13 of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, inoculated it into soil to protect cucumber from FA and PHBA stress, and explored a mechanism underlying the protection. CSY-P13 effectively degraded a mixture of FA and PHBA in culture solution under conditions of 39.37°C, pH 6.97, and 21.59 g L-1 potassium dihydrogen phosphate, giving ris

Assessment of bioavailable organic phosphorus in tropical forest soils by organic acid extraction and phosphatase hydrolysis.

Soil organic phosphorus contributes to the nutrition of tropical trees, but is not accounted for in standard soil phosphorus tests. Plants and microbes can release organic anions to solubilize organic phosphorus from soil surfaces, and synthesize phosphatases to release inorganic phosphate from the solubilized compounds. We developed a procedure to estimate bioavailable organic phosphorus in tropical forest soils by simulating the secretion processes of organic acids and phosphatases. Five lowland tropical forest soils with contrasting properties (pH 4.4-6.1, total P 86-429 mg P kg- 1) were ex

The secreted purple acid phosphatase isozymes AtPAP12 and AtPAP26 play a pivotal role in extracellular phosphate-scavenging by Arabidopsis thaliana.

Orthophosphate (P(i)) is an essential but limiting macronutrient for plant growth. Extensive soil P reserves exist in the form of organic P (P(o)), which is unavailable for root uptake until hydrolysed by secretory acid phosphatases (APases). The predominant purple APase (PAP) isozymes secreted by roots of P(i)-deficient (-P(i)) Arabidopsis thaliana were recently identified as AtPAP12 (At2g27190) and AtPAP26 (At5g34850). The present study demonstrated that exogenous P(o) compounds such as glycerol-3-phosphate or herring sperm DNA: (i) effectively substituted for P(i) in supporting the P nutrit

Investigation of biogeochemical controls on the formation, uptake and accumulation of methylmercury in rice paddies in the vicinity of a coal-fired power plant and a municipal solid waste incinerator in Taiwan.

Recent studies have shown that rice consumption is another critical route of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg), the most toxic and accumulative form of mercury (Hg) in the food web. Yet, the mechanisms that underlie the production and accumulation of MeHg in the paddy ecosystem are still poorly understood. In 2013 and 2014, we conducted field campaigns and laboratory experiments over a rice growing season to examine Hg and MeHg cycling, as well as associated biogeochemistry in a suite of paddies close to a municipal solid waste incinerator and a coal-fired power plant station in Taiwan. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi spore density and species diversity varied within plants species and between dry Afromontane forests in northwestern Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Afromontane forests are rich in biodiversity and they a part of the eastern biodiversity hotspot. However, they are the most degraded ecosystems, continuously shrinking in size. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form a symbiotic association with land plants; thereby assist plants by absorbing nutrients and water beyond root depletion zones. Further they help plants in tolerating abiotic and biotic stresses. The objective of this study was to determine the AMF spore density and species diversity associated to the dominant plant species in Aradie and Zengena dry Afromontane forests. T

Migration and transformation of α-Fe2O3 in plant and the associated physiological response mechanism.

Understanding the size-dependent behavior of iron oxide nanoparticles in crop systems is critical for assessing their environmental risks and application potential. In this study, α-Fe2O3 materials with particle sizes of 25 nm, 200 nm, and 400 nm were successfully synthesized and systematically evaluated for their transport, transformation, and physiological effects on rice. Among these, the 25 nm α-Fe2O3 exhibited a higher zeta potential, facilitating electrostatic interaction with the negatively charged rice surface. Exposure to α-Fe2O3 increased the formation of iron plaque on root surfaces

Synergistic remediation of cadmium and BDE-209 co-contaminated soil using Solanum nigrum assisted by Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and citric acid.

Co-contamination of cadmium (Cd) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in soil is common, posing serious ecological and health risks. Simultaneous remediation of both pollutants using plants is particularly challenging due to their contrasting environmental behaviors. The challenge is chelators can enhance Cd extraction by plants but Cd inhibits microbial activity, limiting PBDEs degradation. To tackle this, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi show promising potential as they produce extensive hyphae networks capable of immobilizing Cd and enhancing rhizosphere microbial activity. However,

Effects of citric acid on Cd speciation in biochar-amended contaminated soils.

Understanding the roles of low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) in the transformation of chemical speciation of heavy metals in contaminated soil amended by biochar is of great significance for assessing the effectiveness of this carbonaceous amendment. The impacts of citric acid (a typical LMWOA) on the redistribution of Cd in contaminated soil amended by different amounts of biochar (1-5%) generated at various pyrolysis temperatures (300 ~ 700 °C) were investigated in this study. Biochar treatments reduced the exchangeable fraction (F1) of Cd after one year of incubation. Meanwhile, b

Alginate Beads Encapsulated Auxin-Producing PGPR as a Biofertilizer Promotes Triticum aestivum Growth.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can be utilized to enhance plant growth and production. The use of efficient PGPR is one of the effective ways to improve Triticum aestivum (wheat) growth and nutrition. The exploration of native rhizobacterial strains as biofertilizers with suitable carriers in immobilized form is an alternative way to prevent soil ecosystem pollution. In order to evaluate the potential of biofertilizers and multiple plant growth-promoting attributes, numerous experiments were conducted on isolated strains. The impact of auxin-producing rhizobacterial strains (APRS)
