Cone beam computed tomography for diagnosis and treatment planning of supernumerary teeth.

Conventional radiographic images are frequently used to detect supernumerary teeth. However, recent developments in 3D imaging systems have enabled dentists to better visualize supernumerary teeth, with better contrast and more details. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has improved diagnosis and treatment planning of patients with supernumerary teeth. The decision to use CBCT should be based on the diagnostic information required. This article presents three case reports of patients with supernumerary teeth to demonstrate the need for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning based on a co

Dental findings in parents of children with cleft lip and palate.

The incidence of dental abnormalities in the cleft lip and palate population has been reported to be much higher than in the normal population. The role of genes in the production of a cleft lip and palate, and dental anomalies is thought to be complex, with autosomal dominant, recessive, and x-linked genes all playing a role. Noncleft parents can carry some of the cleft lip and palate genes, which produce clinically subtle manifestations in their facial skeleton. The purpose of this study was to look for evidence of increased dental anomalies in the non-cleft parents of cleft lip and palate c

Spectrum of Dental Phenotypes in Nonsyndromic Orofacial Clefting.

Children with oral clefts show a wide range of dental anomalies, adding complexity to understanding the phenotypic spectrum of orofacial clefting. The evidence is mixed, however, on whether the prevalence of dental anomalies is elevated in unaffected relatives and is mostly based on small samples. In the largest international cohort to date of children with nonsyndromic clefts, their relatives, and controls, this study characterizes the spectrum of cleft-related dental anomalies and evaluates whether families with clefting have a significantly higher risk for such anomalies compared with the g

[Treatment of Riga-Fede's disease by resin-coverage of the incisal edges and seven cases of natal and neonatal teeth].

This report concerned 2 cases (1-month and 8-day-old boy and 5-month and 27-day-old boy) of Riga-Fede's disease. The cases were treated with photopolymerized resin coverage of the incisal edges. Generally, the treatment methods for Riga-Fede's disease are discing and extraction of the traumatized teeth. The photopolymerized resin coverage proved to help in the rapid healing of the ulcerations. This method is useful because it is easy and is able to avoid a false pulp exposure of the hypoplastic natal and neonatal teeth by discing. 7 cases of natal and neonatal teeth were encountered at the Ped

Therapeutic Protocol for Orthosurgical Management of Class III Malocclusion in Patients With Cleidocranial Dysostosis.

Cleidocranial dysostosis (CCD) is a congenital skeletal disorder with significant manifestations in facial and dental development. Patients are affected with CCD present maxillary deficiency, late dental eruption, and supernumerary teeth. Early and multidisciplinary approach is necessary to treat CCD patients, especially to manage dental eruption and Class III malocclusion with maxillary deficiency. Several orthodontic and surgical interventions are performed to enable traction and extraction of teeth. Yet the maxillary deficiency may be protracted followed by orthodontic dental compensation.

Interdisciplinary management of dental anomalies: fusion and supernumerary teeth.

A 16-year-old boy presented with a fused permanent maxillary left central incisor with a supplemental tooth and an additional supplemental tooth lingual to the permanent maxillary right central incisor. Following leveling, alignment, and endodontic therapy, the maxillary fused left central incisor was sectioned and the mesial portion extracted as planned. Fixed orthodontic treatment commenced after 10 days to align the maxillary anterior segment. After completion, the midline diastema was closed with veneers. This case highlights the treatment options of a fused tooth and the need for multidis

Occult radiologic changes in the skull and jaw in familial adenomatous polyposis coli.

It has been suggested that radiology of the skull and jaw in familial polyposis coli may be a useful marker in up to 90 percent of cases. These x-rays were reviewed independently by a dental surgeon and a neuroradiologist in 51 patients. Only seven patients (14 percent) had significant lesion seen in the context of screening. Each of these patients also had other extracolonic manifestations of familial polyposis coli. The Cleveland Clinic Foundation experience with radiology of the jaw and skull is that it is not a useful screening tool.

[Unerupted first deciduous molar located higher to the first premolar: a case report].

Tooth eruption is defined as the movement of a tooth from its site of development within the alveolar process to its functional position in the oral cavity. The process of tooth eruption can be divided into different phases: pre-eruptive bone stage, alveolar bone stage, mucosal stage, preocclusal stage, occlusal stage and maturation stage. Any disturbance in these phases can lead to eruptive anomalies. The incidence of unerupted teeth is usually higher among permanent teeth than among deciduous ones. Of the primary teeth reported as unerupted, second deciduous molars are the teeth most frequen

What factors are associated with impacted canines in cleft patients?

PURPOSE: It is important to predict and prevent the impaction of canines. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of impacted canines in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and to identify factors associated with impaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients with nonsyndromic UCLP. The predictors were pre-eruptive inclination angle, deviation in tooth number (agenesis or supernumerary lateral incisors), and reoperation of bone transplant. The outcome variable was impacted and surgically exposed canines. RESULTS: The prevalen

The role of digital volume tomography in the imaging of impacted teeth.

AIM: Digital volume tomography is presented here as an alternative to routine computerized tomography in the diagnosis and treatment planning of impacted teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sample of 20 patients with a variety of types of tooth impaction was investigated and five representative cases are described. The potential disadvantages of digital volume tomography--inferior spatial resolution of subtle structures and limited representation of soft tissues--were of no clinical significance in the presented cases of impacted teeth. The method provides 3-dimensional images closely akin to regu

Diagnostic accuracy and observer performance in the diagnosis of abnormalities in the anterior maxilla: a comparison of panoramic with intraoral radiography.

An investigation was undertaken to assess the reliability of radiographic diagnosis of abnormalities of orthodontic significance in the anterior region of the maxilla from intraoral and dental panoramic tomograph (DPT) views. DPT films of 200 patients were scrutinised by two observers on two separate occasions, who also examined intraoral radiographs of the same patients. Sixty-three of these patients were selected because they had previously been diagnosed as presenting with a defined abnormality of orthodontic relevance, such as supernumerary teeth, absent incisors, etc. The remaining cases

Deep learning with convolution neural network detecting mesiodens on panoramic radiographs: comparing four models.

The aim of this study was to develop an optimal, simple, and lightweight deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) model to detect the presence of mesiodens on panoramic radiographs. A total of 628 panoramic radiographs with and without mesiodens were used as training, validation, and test data. The training, validation, and test dataset were consisted of 218, 51, and 40 images with mesiodens and 203, 55, and 61 without mesiodens, respectively. Unclear panoramic radiographs for which the diagnosis could not be accurately determined and other modalities were required for the final diagno

Supernumerary teeth vary depending on gender.

The presence of supernumerary teeth (ST) is a dental developmental anomaly of patterning and morphogenesis. Its variability of morphology, location and developmental timing can shed light on its etiology. In this work we report ST patterns. Orthopantomograms of 1,166 pediatric subjects were examined and the morphology, location and timing of the formation of ST were determined. The frequency of supernumerary teeth in the studied population was 2.3% (n = 27). Twenty-five subjects presented one ST. Maxilla midline was the most commonly affected region (nine cases). We noted high incidence of con

Reliability of panoramic radiographs for identifying supernumerary teeth in children.

OBJECTIVES. To evaluate the reliability of panoramic radiographs (PRs) for identifying supernumerary teeth (ST) and to determine whether the level of dental training of the observer influenced the identification of ST. METHODS. Seventy-five PRs were randomly selected from the patient records and 18 examiners independently rated 25 radiographs each, for specific risk factors as well as for a measure of adequacy. Subsequently, the results were paired with those of the other examiners who assessed the same set of PRs. Descriptive statistics were computed using Fisher's exact test, and kappa stati

Trichotillomania in children: the occult truth.

A major emphasis of modern-day pediatric dental care is a holistic approach to children and the importance of treating them as individuals and not merely as patients with mouth diseases. We should not restrict ourselves to the oral cavity alone, but also explore the mind of an individual, for in it lays the hidden clue to successful management. In order to achieve this, we need to meet the mind of the child before meeting the mouth. Surmounting pressure on today's children builds a lot of anxiety in them, and this in turn is the foundation for various psychological problems. One such rare but
