Omega 3: a novel treatment agent in oral submucous fibrosis: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a chronic debilitating disease and a premalignant condition of the oral cavity. It is well known for its impervious nature to medical therapy. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids have been reported to have anti-inflammatory properties. However, its role in OSF is still not known. This preliminary study assessed the efficacy of systemic omega 3 in this disease. METHODS: A randomized single-blinded controlled trial was designed, and a total of 10 clinically confirmed adult patients with OSF were included in the study. Group A was given biweekly intra

Increased risk of temporomandibular joint closed lock: a case-control study of ANKH polymorphisms.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to carry out a histological examination of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in ank mutant mice and to identify polymorphisms of the human ANKH gene in order to establish the relationship between the type of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and ANKH polymorphisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens from the TMJ of ank mutant and wild-type mice were inspected with a haematoxylin and eosin staining method. A sample of 55 TMD patients were selected. Each was examined with standard clinical procedures and genotyping techniques. RESULTS: The major histological finding

Anaesthetic considerations of temporomandibular joint ankylosis with obstructive sleep apnoea: a case report.

The peroperative management of a 4 1/2 yr old child having bilateral recurrent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is presented here. From the anaesthesiologist's point of view, the patient demands special considerations as regards difficulty in intubation, high sensitivity to all central depressant drugs, awake extubation, and post-operative maintenance of a clear airway. It is to be concluded that these conditions call for strict adherence to the basic principles of airway management and close observation extending into the post-operative period.

Temporomandibular joint arthroscopy: a 6-year multicenter retrospective study of 4,831 joints.

Four health outcomes (range of motion, pain, diet, and disability) were measured in six diagnostic categories (internal derangement with closed lock, internal derangement with painful click, osteoarthritis, hypermobility, fibrous ankylosis, and arthralgia) in a 6-year retrospective multicenter study of 4,831 temporomandibular joints having undergone arthroscopic surgery. After arthroscopic surgery, 91.6% of all patients had good or excellent motion; 91.3% had good or excellent pain reduction; 90.6% had good or excellent ability to maintain a normal diet; and 92% had a good or excellent reducti

Late-Onset Nonhereditary Cherubism: First Reported Case in Ghana With Review of Diagnostic and Management Challenges.

BACKGROUND: Cherubism is a rare genetic disorder characterised by multilocular cystic lesions in the mandible and/or maxilla, which result in the typical cherub-like face. Two forms of cherubism exist-hereditary (familial) and nonhereditary (nonfamilial)-and it usually occurs amongst children aged 2-7 years. The disorder is caused by a mutation in the SH3BP2 gene on Chromosome 4p16.3, essential for jaw development. The prognosis of cherubism shows that lesions increase in size and plateau at puberty, after which the lesions begin to regress and become undetectable. We present the first case of

An Artificial Intelligence Approach to the Craniofacial Recapitulation of Crisponi/Cold-Induced Sweating Syndrome 1 (CISS1/CISS) from Newborns to Adolescent Patients.

Background/Objectives: Crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome 1 (CISS1/CISS, MIM#272430) is a genetic disorder due to biallelic variants in CRFL1 (MIM*604237). The related phenotype is mainly characterized by abnormal thermoregulation and sweating, facial muscle contractions in response to tactile and crying-inducing stimuli at an early age, skeletal anomalies (camptodactyly of the hands, scoliosis), and craniofacial dysmorphisms, comprising full cheeks, micrognathia, high and narrow palate, low-set ears, and a depressed nasal bridge. The condition is associated with high lethality during the

Awareness and Perception of Impacted Wisdom Teeth among Non-Medical Students in Salem: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Impacted teeth may sometimes be asymptomatic but can also be associated with serious complications such as infections, cysts, or tumors. The common symptoms of impacted teeth include pain, swelling, and/or trismus (difficulty opening the mouth). Despite the potential for complications, public awareness of impacted teeth is low. Thus, this research aims to assess the awareness and consequences of impacted teeth among non-medical students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted among non-medical students in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India. A validated standard qu

Subclavian Steal Syndrome Caused by Thrombosis Associated with COVID-19: a Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Thromboembolic complications are a frequent occurrence during COVID-19. This report presents a patient with signs of subclavian steal syndrome (SSS) caused by a thrombus in the initial part of the right subclavian artery. Pathological occlusive changes, such as thrombosis, are four times more common on the left subclavian. Thrombosis of the subclavian artery occurs in about 1% of the population, but atherosclerotic changes are common and usually asymptomatic. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this report is to present a patient with signs of subclavian steal syndrome (SSS) caused by a thrombu

Evaluation of low-level laser at auriculotherapy points to reduce postoperative pain in inferior third molar surgery: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A comfortable postoperative return to daily activities has increased the need to control inflammation after third molar surgery. Anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics are not exempt from adverse effects such as allergies and chronic gastritis, and they are not without cost. The association between low-level laser and auricular acupuncture can be an alternative when conventional drugs are contraindicated. Among its advantages, we can mention the low risk of side effects, low cost and simplicity of application. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of low-level l

3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA): current perspectives.

Ecstasy is a widely used recreational drug that usually consists primarily of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). Most ecstasy users consume other substances as well, which complicates the interpretation of research in this field. The positively rated effects of MDMA consumption include euphoria, arousal, enhanced mood, increased sociability, and heightened perceptions; some common adverse reactions are nausea, headache, tachycardia, bruxism, and trismus. Lowering of mood is an aftereffect that is sometimes reported from 2 to 5 days after a session of ecstasy use. The acute effects of MD

Differential secretion of the mutated protein is a major component affecting phenotypic severity in CRLF1-associated disorders.

Crisponi syndrome (CS) and cold-induced sweating syndrome type 1 (CISS1) are disorders caused by mutations in CRLF1. The two syndromes share clinical characteristics, such as dysmorphic features, muscle contractions, scoliosis and cold-induced sweating, with CS patients showing a severe clinical course in infancy involving hyperthermia, associated with death in most cases in the first years of life. To evaluate a potential genotype/phenotype correlation and whether CS and CISS1 represent two allelic diseases or manifestations at different ages of the same disorder, we carried out a detailed cl

Airway management of tetanus after the Haitian earthquake: new aspects of old observations.

Two men developed severe tetanus after the 2010 Haitian earthquake. They were admitted to the United States Naval Ship Comfort, a hospital ship sent to provide humanitarian relief. Severe masseter and intercostal muscle spasm impaired airway access and ventilation. Propofol and sevoflurane relieved the tetany, allowing airway control and ventilation without intubation or neuromuscular blocking drugs during wound debridement. Presynaptic impairment of inhibitory neurotransmitter release by tetanospasmin toxin is countered by enhancement of spinal cord postsynaptic inhibitory receptor activity b

Dynamic Surgical Restoration of Mid and Lower Facial Paralysis: A Single-Greek-Centre Experience.

Background Facial palsy detrimentally impacts an individual's quality of life due to its effects on function and appearance. There are several reconstructive surgical techniques available that aim to restore facial symmetry. Techniques such as direct neurorrhaphy, nerve grafts, dual reanimation, and reinnervation have the potential to enable varying motor functions, including the re-establishment of a dynamic smile. This study aimed to assess the outcomes of facial palsy reconstructive surgeries undertaken at a tertiary care centre for facial nerve reconstruction in Athens. Methods This study

A retrospective clinical, multi-center cross-sectional study to assess the severity and sequela of Noma/Cancrum oris in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Noma is a disfiguring gangrenous disease of the orofacial tissue and predominantly affects malnourished children. The tissue gangrene or necrosis starts in the mouth and eventually spreads intra-orally with the destruction of soft and hard tissues. If not controlled, the natural course of the condition leads to a perforation through the skin of the face, creating a severe cosmetic and functional defect, which often affects the mid-facial structures. Furthermore, the course of the disease is fulminating, and without timely intervention, it is fatal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retro

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the masticatory muscles: etiology, diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Myositis ossificans describes a heterotopic bone formation within a muscle. Thereby myositis ossificans is classified in two different groups: myositis ossificans progressiva (MOP) which describes a genetic autosomal dominant rare disease and myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT). The exact pathogenesis of MOT is unclear. The aim of this article was to analyse and interpret the existing literature reporting MOT of masticatory muscles and compare the results with our own clinical experience with MOT. Risk-factors, etiology, clinical features, diagnostic imaging, as well as different

Low-level laser therapy/photobiomodulation in the management of side effects of chemoradiation therapy in head and neck cancer: part 2: proposed applications and treatment protocols.

PURPOSE: There is a large body of evidence supporting the efficacy of low-level laser therapy (LLLT), more recently termed photobiomodulation (PBM) for the management of oral mucositis (OM) in patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancer (HNC). Recent advances in PBM technology, together with a better understanding of mechanisms involved and dosimetric parameters may lead to the management of a broader range of complications associated with HNC treatment. This could enhance patient adherence to cancer therapy, and improve quality of life and treatment outcomes. The mechanisms of a
