Dietary Kluyveromyces marxianus hydrolysate alters humoral immunity, jejunal morphology, cecal microbiota and metabolic pathways in broiler chickens raised under a high stocking density.

This study investigated the impact of dietary supplementation with hydrolyzed yeast (Kluyveromyces marxianus) on growth performance, humoral immunity, jejunal morphology, cecal microbiota and metabolic pathways in broilers raised at 45 kg/m2. A total of 1,176 mixed sex 1-day-old Ross 308 broilers were distributed into 42 pens and randomly assigned to either the control group, the control + 250 g hydrolyzed yeast (HY)/ton, 250HY group, or the control + 500 g HY/ton, 500HY group for 42 d. HY did not affect growth performance. However, HY reduced (P < 0.05) mortality at 25 to 35 d. Dietary HY low

Refining the relationship between gut microbiota and common hematologic malignancies: insights from a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

BackgroundThe relationship between gut microbiota and hematologic malignancies has attracted considerable attention. As research progresses, it has become increasingly clear that the composition of gut microbiota may influence the onset and progression of hematologic malignancies. However, our understanding of this association remains limited.MethodsIn our study, we classified gut microbiota into five groups based on information at the phylum, class, order, family, and genus levels. Subsequently, we obtained data related to common hematologic malignancies from the IEU Open GWAS project. We the

Effects of pepper-maize intercropping on the physicochemical properties, microbial communities, and metabolites of rhizosphere and bulk soils.

BACKGROUND: Intercropping increases land use efficiency and farmland ecological diversity. However, little is understood about whether and how soil biota, metabolites, and nutrients change under interspecific competition among plants. Thus, this study aimed to explore the changes in the physicochemical properties, microbial communities, and metabolites of rhizosphere and bulk soils of pepper monocropping and pepper-maize intercropping systems. RESULTS: Intercropping significantly increased the contents of available phosphorus (AP) and available potassium (AK), and decreased the pH value, wher

Occurrence of potentially toxic microalgae and diarrhetic shellfish toxins in the digestive tracts of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) from southern Brazil.

Algal toxins are involved in the mortality and/or illness of marine organisms via consumption of contaminated prey, or upon direct exposure to toxic cells. In this study, the presence of potentially toxic microalgal cells was investigated within the digestive tract contents of a threatened species of green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Additionally, lipophilic toxins were determined by LC-MS/MS in tissue samples (liver, stomach and/or intestine) of selected animals (n = 39 individuals) found dead-stranded in southern Brazil, from winter/2015 to autumn/2016. Thirteen potentially toxic species of mic

Synergistic Effect of Berberine-Based Chinese Medicine Assembled Nanostructures on Diarrhea-Predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome In Vivo.

Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is one common chronic functional disease of the digestive system with limited treatments. The microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA) has a central function in the pathogeny of IBS-D, which includes the participation of many various factors, such as brain-gut peptides (BGPs), immune inflammation, and intestinal flora. Inspired by the drug combination in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), our previous study discovered that berberine (BBR) and baicalin (BA) could form natural self-assemblies as BA-BBR nanoparticles (BA-BBR NPs) and showed synergist

Assessment of Microbial Community Dynamics in River Bank Filtrate Using High-Throughput Sequencing and Flow Cytometry.

Surface-groundwater interactions play an important role in microbial community compositions of river bank filtrates. Surface water contaminations deriving from environmental influences are attenuated by biogeochemical processes in the hyporheic zone, which are essential for providing clean and high-quality drinking water in abstraction wells. Characterizing the flow regime of surface water into the groundwater body can provide substantial information on water quality, but complex hydraulic dynamics make predictions difficult. Thus, a bottom up approach using microbial community shifting patter

Nutrient-Colimited Trichodesmium as a Nitrogen Source or Sink in a Future Ocean.

Nitrogen-fixing (N2) cyanobacteria provide bioavailable nitrogen to vast ocean regions but are in turn limited by iron (Fe) and/or phosphorus (P), which may force them to employ alternative nitrogen acquisition strategies. The adaptive responses of nitrogen fixers to global-change drivers under nutrient-limited conditions could profoundly alter the current ocean nitrogen and carbon cycles. Here, we show that the globally important N2 fixer Trichodesmium fundamentally shifts nitrogen metabolism toward organic-nitrogen scavenging following long-term high-CO2 adaptation under iron and/or phosphor

Algal toxin profiles in Nigerian coastal waters (Gulf of Guinea) using passive sampling and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.

Algal toxins may accumulate in fish and shellfish and thus cause poisoning in consumers of seafood. Such toxins and the algae producing them are regularly surveyed in many countries, including Europe, North America, Japan and others. However, very little is known regards the occurrence of such algae and their toxins in most African countries. This paper reports on a survey of phytoplankton and algal toxins in Nigerian coastal waters. Seawater samples were obtained from four sites for phytoplankton identification, on three occasions between the middle of October 2014 and the end of February 201

A Comparison of Microbial Water Quality and Diversity for Ballast and Tropical Harbor Waters.

Indicator organisms and antibiotic resistance were used as a proxy to measure microbial water quality of ballast tanks of ships, and surface waters in a tropical harbor. The survival of marine bacteria in ballast tanks appeared to diminish over longer water retention time, with a reduction of cell viability observed after a week based on heterotrophic plate counts. Pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA genes showed distinct differences in microbial composition of ballast and harbor waters. The harbor waters had a higher abundance of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) assigned to Cyanobacteria (Synechococ

Mitigating PCOS progression: The protective effect of C-phycocyanin on ovarian granulosa cell pyroptosis via the NRF2/NLRP3/GSDMD pathway.

BACKGROUND: Pyroptosis is a proinflammatory cell death process that contributes to inflammatory diseases. C-Phycocyanin (C-PC) is a water-soluble protein pigment primarily derived from cyanobacteria, and it exhibits anti-inflammatory effects. However, the role of natural C-PC in pyroptosis in human ovarian granulosa cells (GCs), particularly in conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), remains unclear. This study investigates the effects of C-PC on pyroptosis and its relevance to PCOS. METHODS: Here dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) was used to induce PCOS in a mouse model that was charac

Annexin A1 levels affect microbiota in health and DSS-induced colitis/inflammatory bowel disease development.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs) are characterized by intestinal dysbiosis and immune dysregulation. Annexin A1 (AnxA1) promotes epithelial repair and inhibits immune responses during IBD. However, AnxA1's impact on gut microbiota during IBD remains unclear. Here, we experimentally investigated the microbiota profile during colitis in wild-type (WT) and AnxA1-deficient mice (AnxA1-/-), and evaluated an observational cohort in IBD patients with high or low AnxA1 expression. METHODS: Colitis was induced in C57BL/6 WT and AnxA1 -/- mice via oral administration of 2% DSS for six day

Aqueous Extract of Limnospira platensis Provides Protection Against Microcystin-Induced Oxidative Stress in Hydroponic Culture of Radish (Raphanus sativus).

The eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems often triggers the excessive growth of cyanobacteria, many of which release toxic metabolites such as microcystins (MCs). When irrigation water is contaminated by these compounds, adverse consequences may arise for plants as well as for animal and human health. In contrast, certain non-toxic cyanobacterial species like Limnospira platensis are increasingly regarded as valuable tools for sustainable agriculture, given their ability to enhance plant nutrition, growth, yield, and stress tolerance while also mitigating the detrimental impacts of MCs. The pr

Diversity and correlation of endophytic microbiota and Shikonin accumulation in Arnebia Euchroma roots across geographical origins.

Arnebia euchroma(Royle) Johnst. is a high-value medicinal plant. Owing to depleted wild resources and inferior quality of artificially cultivated populations, it currently faces a supply-demand imbalance. As endogenous regulators of plant growth and secondary metabolism, endophytes may influence the quality of medicinal materials. However, their role in A. euchroma remains unreported, as existing studies have primarily focused on the impacts of environmental factors. High-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics were employed to analyze the community characteristics of endophytes in the roots

Oral and gut microbiota in gingivitis subtypes: a causal inference study using Mendelian randomization.

BACKGROUND: The disruption of microbiota balance could be a pivotal factor in the complications arising from periodontal disease-induced inflammation outside the mouth. Nonetheless, it remains uncertain whether there is a direct causal relationship between the oral and gut microbiomes and gingivitis, especially in distinguishing between acute and chronic gingivitis. METHODS: We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using GWAS summary statistics from FinnGen data (149 acute gingivitis cases, 850 chronic gingivitis cases, and 195,395 controls) to explore the causal role o

Acute exposure to microcystins affects hypothalamic-pituitary axes of male rats.

Microcystins (MCs) produced by some cyanobacteria can cause toxicity in animals and humans. In recent years, growing evidence suggests that MCs can act as endocrine disruptors. This research systematically investigated effects of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) on endocrine organs, biosynthesis of hormones and positive/negative feedback of the endocrine system in rats. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats were acutely administrated MC-LR by a single intraperitoneal injection at doses of 45, 67.5 or 90 μg MC-LR/kg body mass (bm), and then euthanized 24 h after exposure. In exposed rats, histological damage of hypo
