Differential susceptibility of SARS-CoV-2 in animals: Evidence of ACE2 host receptor distribution in companion animals, livestock and wildlife by immunohistochemical characterisation.

Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a host cell membrane protein (receptor) that mediates the binding of coronavirus, most notably SARS coronaviruses in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Although SARS-CoV-2 infection is mainly confined to humans, there have been numerous incidents of spillback (reverse zoonoses) to domestic and captive animals. An absence of information on the spatial distribution of ACE2 in animal tissues limits our understanding of host species susceptibility. Here, we describe the distribution of ACE2 using immunohistochemistry (IHC) on histological section

Presence of Rickettsia Species in a Marginalized Area of Yucatan, Mexico.

In the state of Yucatan, Mexico, rickettsiosis has become a common vector-borne disease in the general population. Ectoparasite species such as Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Amblyomma mixtum have been identified as Rickettsia vectors in Yucatan by studies focused on the wild animal population in rural areas. There have been studies that have tried to determine the presence of Rickettsia species in ectoparasites collected in Yucatan, but these studies did not include marginalized areas, where living in close contact with domestic and peridomestic animals that carry ectoparasites is a high-risk f

Hyperactive gp130/STAT3-driven gastric tumourigenesis promotes submucosal tertiary lymphoid structure development.

Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) display phenotypic and functional characteristics of secondary lymphoid organs, and often develop in tissues affected by chronic inflammation, as well as in certain inflammation-associated cancers where they are prognostic of improved patient survival. However, the mechanisms that govern the development of tumour-associated TLSs remain ill-defined. Here, we observed tumour-associated TLSs in a preclinical mouse model (gp130F/F ) of gastric cancer, where tumourigenesis is dependent on hyperactive STAT3 signalling through the common IL-6 family signalling rece

Detection of Sarcocystis spp. infection in bobcats (Lynx rufus).

The protozoan Sarcocystis neurona is an important cause of severe clinical disease of horses (called equine protozoal myeloencephalitis, EPM), marine mammals, companion animals, and several species of wildlife animals in the Americas. The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is its definitive host in the USA and other animals act as intermediate or aberrant hosts. Samples of tongue and heart from 35 bobcats hunted for fur and food from Mississippi State, USA in February, 2014 were used for the present study. Muscles were examined for Sarcocystis infection by microscopic examination of eithe

Sperm ubiquitination in epididymal feline semen.

Ubiquitin is a 8.5-kDa peptide that tags other proteins for proteasomal degradation. It has been proposed that ubiquitination might be responsible for the elimination of defective spermatozoa during transit through the epididymis in humans and cattle, but its exact biological function in seminal plasma has not yet been clarified. In the domestic cat (Felis catus), the percentage of immature, unviable, and abnormal spermatozoa decreases during the epididymal transit, indicating the existence of a mechanism that removes defective spermatozoa. Magnetic cell separation techniques, based on the use

Molecular epidemiology of Cryptosporidium in humans and cattle in The Netherlands.

The protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium is found world-wide and can cause disease in both humans and animals. To study the zoonotic potential of Cryptosporidium in The Netherlands we isolated this parasite from the faeces of infected humans and cattle and genotyped those isolates for several different markers. The overall genotyping results showed: for humans isolates, 70% Cryptosporidium hominis, 19% Cryptosporidium parvum, 10% a combination of C. hominis and C. parvum, and 1% Cryptosporidium felis; and for cattle isolates 100% C. parvum. Analysis of the genetic variants detected for the HSP70

Helicobacter pylori promotes the production of thymic stromal lymphopoietin by gastric epithelial cells and induces dendritic cell-mediated inflammatory Th2 responses.

Helicobacter pylori colonizes the stomach and induces strong, specific local and systemic humoral and cell-mediated immunity, resulting in the development of chronic gastritis in humans. Although H. pylori-induced chronic atrophic gastritis is characterized by marked infiltration of T helper type 1 (Th1) cytokine-producing CD4(+) T cells, almost all of the inflamed gastric mucosae also contain focal lymphoid aggregates with germinal centers. In addition, typical H. pylori-induced chronic gastritis in children, called follicular gastritis, is characterized by B-cell follicle formation in the ga

Discounting multiple benefits of cat containment by reframing them as trade-offs: Response to Glanville et al. (2025).

Domestic cats (Felis catus) are favoured companion animals, but also highly effective predators that have caused substantial declines and extinctions of native fauna in many places where they have been introduced. In Australia, free-roaming pet cats kill hundreds of millions of native animals annually, contributing to one of the world's most severe modern extinction crises. In response, policy, advocacy and public messaging has increasingly promoted responsible pet cat management, including containment, on the multiple grounds of biodiversity protection, public amenity, disease spread reductio

Preliminary short-term establishment and replication kinetics of a flea-derived Wolbachia strain in an Aedes albopictus cell line.

Mosquito-borne arboviral diseases such as dengue and chikungunya have continuously been a major global public health concern. Introducing the intracellular bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia into mosquito populations has been proven to reduce dengue virus transmission, and its broader efficacy against other arboviruses has also been investigated. Several Wolbachia strains have been successfully propagated in insect cell lines, highlighting the utility of in vitro systems for studying microbial-host interactions under controlled conditions. This study investigated the initial establishment and re

Pre-Analytical Cleanup of Feline Feces Improves DNA Extract Quality, Reduces Post-Extraction PCR Inhibition, and Enhances Molecular Detectability of Intestinal Protozoa.

Feline feces represent a difficult matrix for molecular diagnostics because stool-derived inhibitors and variable sample composition may compromise DNA recovery and downstream PCR amplification. This paired methodological study evaluated whether a pre-analytical chloroform:methanol cleanup step improves DNA extract quality, post-extraction amplifiability, and molecular detection of selected intestinal protozoa in cats. A total of 105 feline fecal samples were divided into paired aliquots and subjected either to direct automated DNA extraction or to extraction preceded by chloroform:methanol cl

Molecular Detection and Phylogenetic Characterization of CPV-2c in Apparently Healthy Domestic Cats in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Mexico.

Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 variants (CPV-2a, CPV-2b, CPV-2c) have progressively expanded their host range to domestic cats (Felis catus), causing subclinical infection or panleukopenia-like disease. CPV-2c dominates among dogs in Western Mexico, but its presence in the local feline population had not been investigated. A cross-sectional survey was conducted (2018-2022) in 210 apparently healthy domestic cats from five municipalities of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Jalisco, Mexico. Genomic DNA from EDTA-anticoagulated blood was screened by generic protoparvovirus PCR; positive samples we

Ecological and environmental conditions correlate with flea population within human habitations in a plague focus, Mbulu district, Tanzania.

Plague persistence remains a major health concern in some African countries. Although the role of some flea vectors in their transmission is widely known, the local-scale factors contributing to human plague recurrence are still poorly understood, thwarting the potential disease mitigation measures in affected communities. We examined the flea population and their relationship to household practices in rural Mbulu District, northern Tanzania. We sampled fleas from both host (170 rodents in 3 species) and household interiors using a Light trap (Ltrap). We found seven species of flea inhabiting

Investigation of Cryptosporidium infection in a broad range of hosts in northern China.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium infection occurs in humans, domestic animals, and wildlife. To date, at least 49 species and 120 genotypes have been identified. Hitherto, molecular identification of Cryptosporidium species in wildlife has seldom been reported in China. METHODS: During 2014-2025, a total of 1855 small intestinal or fecal specimens were collected from 1500 mammals, 121 reptiles, and 234 birds in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR), northern China. The identification of each animal species was based on morphological characteristics and

Investigation of antimicrobial susceptibility and resistance gene prevalence in Capnocytophaga spp. isolated from dogs and cats and characterization of novel class A β-lactamase CST-1.

PURPOSE: Capnocytophaga spp., common inhabitants of the animal oral cavity, are zoonotic pathogens transmitted to humans through dog/cat bites and cat scratches. Appropriate antimicrobial therapy is essential for treatment this zoonotic disease because of the rapid deterioration of systemic symptoms at disease onset; however, antimicrobial resistance of animal bite-associated Capnocytophaga spp. has not been fully investigated. We sought to understand the antimicrobial susceptibility and prevalence of resistance genes among Capnocytophaga sp. isolates obtained from dogs and cats. METHOD: Mini

Evaluation of the Use of Singleplex and Duplex CerTest VIASURE Real-Time PCR Assays to Detect Common Intestinal Protist Parasites.

Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis and Entamoeba histolytica are species of protozoa- causing diarrhoea that are common worldwide, while Entamoeba dispar, Dientamoeba fragilis and Blastocystis sp. appear to be commensal parasites whose role in pathogenicity remains controversial. We conducted the clinical evaluation of five singleplex and one duplex CerTest VIASURE Real-Time PCR Assays against a large panel of positive DNA samples (n = 358), and specifically to Cryptosporidium spp. (n = 96), G. duodenalis (n = 115), E. histolytica (n = 25) E. dispar (n = 11), Blastocystis sp. A systematic survey of environmental DNA in Palau's lakes and waterfalls reveals an increase in Leptospira levels after flooding.

OBJECTIVE: Leptospirosis is an important bacterial zoonosis which is widespread in tropical and subtropical islands and influences human and animal health which has secondary economic effects. Although leptospirosis is endemic in Palau, an Oceanian Pacific Island country, few systematic surveys of potential risk factors for Leptospira infection, such as weather and host animals, have been conducted in the natural environment. We used environmental DNA metabarcoding to assess the distribution, species diversity, and abundance of pathogenic Leptospira in this endemic region to investigate the po

Investigating Influenza Virus Polymerase Activity in Feline Cells Based on the Influenza Virus Minigenome Replication System Driven by the Feline RNA Polymerase I Promoter.

Emerging influenza virus poses a health threat to humans and animals. Domestic cats have recently been identified as a potential source of zoonotic influenza virus. The influenza virus minigenome replication system based on the ribonucleic acid (RNA) polymerase I (PolI) promoter is the most widely used tool for investigating polymerase activity. It could help determine host factors or viral proteins influencing influenza virus polymerase activity in vitro. However, influenza virus polymerase activity has never been studied in feline cells thus far. In the present study, the feline RNA PolI pro

A pre- and during Pandemic Survey of Sars-Cov-2 Infection in Stray Colony and Shelter Cats from a High Endemic Area of Northern Italy.

Cats are susceptible to infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Whilst a number of studies have been performed worldwide on owned cats, limited data are available on stray, colony or shelter cats. We investigated SARS-CoV-2 infection in a stray cat population before and during human outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 in cities in the Lombardy region in northern Italy, a high endemic region for SARS-CoV-2, using serological and molecular methods. A cohort of different samples were collected from 241 cats, including frozen archived serum samples from 136 cats collected
