Tendons attach to the limb skeleton via chondral-apophysary or periosteal-diaphysary entheses. It was the aim of the present study to investigate the tendon entheses of the temporal, the masseter, as well as the medial and lateral pterygoid muscles, considering the biomechanics and the mode of osteogenesis at the attachment sites. The origin and insertion zones of the four masticatory muscles were studied histologically and by polarization light microscopy in six halves of human heads. Contrary to the limb skeleton no causal relationship between the histological structure of the tendon enthese

INTRODUCTION: Secondary adaptive bone changes and joint distorsions in clubfoot may present a barrier to adequate correction of the deformity. The purpose of our study is to show how the lateral excision of the calcaneus distal part as described by Lichtblau, in combination with an appropriate medial release allows better correction of forefoot deformity, with less recurrence rate.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 1974 and 1982, 43 feet in 38 patients underwent this type of surgery. Lateral excision o the calcaneus was decided preoperatively in 34 feet, for recurrence of the forefoot deformity f

Present extent of total hip prostheses, protracted course of first operations lead to pathological studies on local tissue reactions, sign of the failure or of the damaging of the artificial hip. Another pathology, often as intricate, is observed after more conservative surgery: high femoral osteotomies, cup arthroplasties, femoral metallic prostheses. Failure of an high femoral osteotomy shows a running of osteoarthritic lesions the topography of which is always modified by the new orientation of the articular bearing segment. BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd) is a pervasive environmental heavy metal linked to various chronic pathologies; however, its specific role and underlying molecular mechanisms in osteoarthritis (OA) pathogenesis remain poorly characterized.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis using the NHANES database (2001-2018) to evaluate the association between blood Cd levels and OA risk. Hub targets were identified by integrating the CTD and GEO databases through network toxicology and machine learning algorithms. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was employed to resolve the cellular localizat

OBJECTIVE: Disulfidptosis is a newly recognized form of regulated cell death characterized by actin cytoskeleton collapse under disulfide stress. Recent studies suggest it may significantly contribute to osteoarthritis (OA), though its exact role in OA development remains unclear. This study aims to analyze the expression of disulfidptosis-related genes in OA, identifying potential biomarkers and candidate therapeutic leads.
METHODS: Transcriptomic data from six datasets related to OA and single-cell RNA sequencing data were sourced from the GEO database. To identify differentially expressed

Acute anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are common in athletes and frequently occur with concomitant cartilage injuries, which can significantly impact knee function and return-to-sport outcomes. Professional athletes have a higher prevalence of ACL injuries with associated chondral lesions, compared with nonprofessional athletes. Management of ACL injuries with concurrent cartilage damage requires careful consideration of operative versus nonoperative treatment, timing, surgical technique, and the extent of cartilage involvement. The objective of this study is to review and compare treat

BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) arises from compression of neurovascular structures within the scalene triangle, costoclavicular space, or pectoralis minor insertion. In Western populations, the average scalene triangle base width is 10.7 mm; however, corresponding anatomical data for Japanese individuals are lacking, and the association between triangle dimensions and body size remains unclear. METHODS: This study assessed 42 Japanese cadavers (21 males, 21 females) to measure the scalene triangle base width, transverse anterior scalene muscle insertion width, and clavicle length u

BACKGROUND: Ulnar-sided wrist pain, frequently linked to triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries, poses a diagnostic challenge due to the limited sensitivity and specificity of standard clinical tests. Although wrist arthroscopy remains the diagnostic gold standard, a reliable clinical tool is needed to better identify peripheral TFCC lesions (Palmer 1B). This study introduces and validates the "TFCC Table Lift Test" (TTL test), a novel exam aimed at improving clinical detection of Palmer 1B TFCC injuries. The primary goal was to correlate TTL test scores with arthroscopic findings,

BACKGROUND: Microfracture is one surgical treatment strategy for osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLTs) but results in fibrocartilage repair tissue, which has inferior mechanical properties to native hyaline cartilage. Biological regulation of microfracture has been suggested to improve the quality of cartilage repair in patients.
PURPOSE: To determine if administration of losartan, fisetin, or losartan and fisetin combined can enhance microfracture-mediated cartilage repair of OLTs in a rabbit model.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Four-month-old female rabbits were

BACKGROUND: Osteochondral defects of the talus can be effectively treated using microfracture, which is technically safe, accessible, and affordable. However, fibrous tissue and fibrocartilage comprise the majority of tissue repairs resulting from these procedures. These tissue types lack the mechanical characteristics of native hyaline cartilage and might significantly contribute to the decline in long-term outcomes. Recombinant human-bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) has been shown to promote matrix synthesis and increase cartilage formation, thus enhancing chondrogenesis in vitro.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the addition of decellularized bovine pericardial patch loaded with mesenchymal stromal cells enhanced bone-to-tendon healing and improved the biomechanical strength of large-to-massive rotator cuff tears in a small animal model.
METHODS: Adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) from rat inguinal fat were isolated, cultured, and loaded onto decellularized bovine pericardium patches. To simulate large-to-massive tears, rats were managed with free cage activity for 6 weeks after tear creation. A total of 18 rats were randomly a

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic microfracture is considered the primary treatment strategy for osteochondral lesions of the talus and has been shown to provide successful outcomes. However, deterioration of clinical outcomes and fibrocartilage infill over time is now a recognized concern. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the outcomes related to cartilage repair tissue after microfracture with use of second-look arthroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to compare these findings with functional outcomes.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients underwent second-look arthroscopy and MR

BACKGROUND: Microfracture is commonly performed for cartilage repair but usually results in fibrocartilage. Microfracture augmented by autologous bone marrow concentrate (BMC) was previously shown to yield structurally superior cartilage repairs in an equine model compared with microfracture alone. The current study was performed to test the hypothesis that autologous BMC without concomitant microfracture improves cartilage repair compared with microfracture alone.
METHODS: Autologous sternal bone marrow aspirate (BMA) was concentrated using a commercial system. Cells from BMC were evaluated

Treatments for acute distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability with distal radius fracture vary from conservative to operative treatment, although it seems to be no consensus regarding which treatment is optimal. This prospective randomized study was designed to compare the clinical outcomes for operative and conservative treatment of acute DRUJ instability with distal radius fracture, according to the presence or absence and type of ulnar styloid process fracture and the degree of its displacement. Between July 2008 and February 2013, we enrolled 157 patients who exhibited an unstable DRUJ d

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility and performance of SPECT/CT arthrography of the wrist in comparison with MR arthrography in patients with suspected ulnocarpal impaction.
METHODS: This prospective study included 28 wrists of 27 patients evaluated with SPECT/CT arthrography and MR arthrography. Iodine contrast medium and gadolinium were injected into the distal radioulnar and midcarpal joints. Late-phase SPECT/CT was performed 3.5 h after intravenous injection of approximately 650 MBq (99m)Tc-DPD. MR and SPECT/CT images were separately reviewed in relation to bone marrow oedema, radionucli

INTRODUCTION: The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is the main stabilizer of the distal radio-ulnar joint. There is a wide disparity in postoperative immobilization after arthroscopic suturing of the TFCC. Moreover, there are no studies focused specifically on the subject.
HYPOTHESIS: Because of its effect on pronosupination, we can ask ourselves whether immobilization of the elbow (during part or all of the immobilization) after arthroscopic suture of the TFCC is necessary.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a single-center, retrospective, comparative study with an inclusion period

Patellar tendinopathy is a common pathology typically seen in athletes involved in repetitive explosive jumping and running activities. Also known as jumpers' knee, it is commonly seen in high-level basketball players. Typically, athletes continue to play with symptoms, which can be aggravated and progress to partial patellar tendon tears. When partial patellar tendon tears occur, prolonged recovery and decreased performance is commonly seen. The pathology and treatment can be frustrating for both the athlete and medical provider. Patellar tendinopathy typically does not involve inflammation b

The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is an intrinsic stabiliser of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ), which serves an important role in wrist movement, forearm rotation and grip strength. A stable DRUJ is a key requirement for pain-free movement of the wrist. TFCC tears are a common ulnar-sided wrist pain associated with decreased grip strength and impaired function. TFCC tears are classified according to the location and cause. The Palmer classification delineates tears into traumatic type 1 and degenerative type 2. The present study investigated the clinical outcomes of using micro
