Staphylococcal persistence and biofilm resistance in bone-anchored hearing systems: Clinical impact.

Persistent inflammation and infection, often linked to staphylococcal colonization, affect bone-anchored hearing system (BAHS) outcomes. Although antibiotics are often used to treat skin complications, the roles of biofilms and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in clinical success remain unclear. This clinical prospective study characterized biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus spp. from BAHS patients, and examined associations with inflammation, pain, and hygiene. Adults eligible for BAHS were prospectively enrolled at a tertiary university hospital in Sweden during 2014

Susceptibility to new antibiotics and genetic characterisation of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales: low activity of cefiderocol against NDM-producing isolates.

OBJECTIVES: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPEs) pose a serious medical threat. In recent years, several new antibiotics targeting carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria have been introduced, including cefiderocol, ceftazidime-avibactam, imipenem-relebactam and meropenem-vaborbactam. However, no systematic monitoring of susceptibility levels is routinely performed, which challenges rational use and the effectiveness of the new antibiotics due to the risk of rapid emergence of resistance. The objective of this study was to assess the susceptibility of new antibiotics targeting c

Extensively drug-resistant Enterobacter ludwigii co-harbouring MCR-9 and a multicopy of blaIMP-1 in South Korea.

In this study, we describe an Enterobacter ludwigii clinical isolate that is resistant to both carbapenems and colistin in South Korea. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that E. ludwigii CRE2104-31 was non-susceptible to all tested antibiotics except fosfomycin. Whole genome sequencing identified a 323-kbp IncHI2 plasmid, pCRE2104-31a, that was co-harbouring mobile colistin resistance (mcr)-9.1 and blaIMP-1. In comparison with other full plasmids, pCRE2104-31a exhibited the closest similarity to a plasmid from the Klebsiella pneumoniae strain CNR48 from France, with 19.9% query cov

Antimicrobial Prophylaxis for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy: Contemporary Practice Patterns.

Background: Updated in 2019, the American Urological Association's (AUA) Best Practice Statement on Urologic Procedures and Antimicrobial Prophylaxis outlines prophylaxis for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Recent studies have challenged these recommendations. We hypothesized that endourologists do not routinely follow the AUA's statement on antibiotic use during PCNL and assessed their prescribing patterns. Methods: A 24-question survey was distributed to members of the Endourological Society. The primary outcome was adherence to the AUA's recommendations. Two multiple logistic regressio

Clinical data from studies involving novel antibiotics to treat multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) pose a critical threat to global healthcare, worsening outcomes and increasing mortality among infected patients. Carbapenemase- and extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales, as well as carbapenemase-producing Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter spp., are common MDR pathogens. New antibiotics and combinations have been developed to address this threat. Clinical trial findings support several combinations, notably ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA, a cephalosporin-β-lactamase inhibitor combination), which is effective in treating complic

Study of class 1 integrons and plasmid profile among multiple drug resistant uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

The emergence of multidrug resistance in uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is associated with the presence of drug resistant plasmids and integrons which facilitate horizontal gene transfer which impose serious challenges in patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs). The proposed research study is designed to determine emerging antibiotic resistance trends and the presence of plasmids and class 1 integron in UPEC. A total 74 strains of urinary pathogens were procured among them 50 UPEC isolates were selected and their antibiotic resistance pattern was performed by CLSI guidelines. Plas

Combination Antibiotic Exposure Selectively Alters the Development of Vancomycin Intermediate Resistance in Staphylococcus aureus.

Invasive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) treated with vancomycin (VAN) is associated with reduced VAN susceptibility and treatment failure. VAN combination therapy is one strategy to improve response, but comprehensive assessments of combinations to prevent resistance are limited. This study identifies optimal combinations to prevent the emergence of VAN-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA). Two standard MRSA and two heterogeneous VISA (hVISA) strains were exposed for 28 days in vitro to VAN alone, VAN with cefazolin (CFZ), fosfomycin, gentamicin, meropenem, rifampin, p
