OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical application of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 672 cases of VATS. There were 17 thoracic diseases such as emphysema, bullectomy for spontaneous pneumothorax, massive bullae, benign tumor of mediastinum, cyst of mediastinum, pulmonary benign tumors, hydropericardium, malignant pleural fluid, etc.
RESULTS: The mean operation time was 57 minutes and there were no intraoperative complications. The bleeding during the operation was less than 100 mL. Postoperative pneumothorax occurred in 4 pa

BACKGROUND: Blunt thoracic injuries in children are unique because the pliability of the chest wall allows transmission of massive external force directly into the mediastinum. Children presenting after blunt chest trauma may have complete disruption of the airway with little external sign of injury. Without prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the risk for progressive respiratory failure is high.
METHODS: Four children with tracheobronchial injuries were referred to a pediatric trauma center from 1994 to 1997. All children, age 18 months to 13 years, suffered unusual crush injuries. A

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a procedure with potential for serious adverse events. Postprocedure imaging is routinely done, yet there is no consensus on the optimal imaging protocol. We describe a novel and simple CT esophagram protocol for evaluation after POEM and for reporting the full spectrum of radiographic findings and subsequent interventions.
METHODS: This was a single-center prospective study of consecutive patients treated with POEM evaluated with CT esophagram.
RESULTS: Eighty-four consecutive patients who had POEM performed underwent CT esophagrams.

The new disease outbreak that causes atypical pneumonia named COVID-19, which started in China's Wuhan province, has quickly spread to a pandemic. Although the imaging test of choice for the initial study is plain chest radiograph, CT has proven useful in characterizing better the complications associated with this new infection. We describe the evolution of 3 patients presenting pneumomediastinum and spontaneous pneumothorax as a very rare complication of COVID-19 and their particular interest as a probable prognostic factor.

BACKGROUND: Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) antibody (Ab)-positive clinically amyopathic dermatomyositis (CADM) with pneumomediastinum (PNM) is a life-threatening condition. We aim to determine the prognostic factors affecting survival of patients with anti-MDA5 Ab-positive CADM complicated with PNM.
METHODS: We retrospectively established a cohort of patients with anti-MDA5 Ab-positive CADM complicated with PNM from April 2013 to July 2019. Demographic data and clinical characteristics from medical records were analyzed and variables were compared between survivors and

AIM: Injuries due to traffic accidents are frequent in childhood, and they have high mortality and morbidity. Laryngeal injury due to a traffic accident is a rare pathology and might be missed if not suspected. Here we present a laryngeal fracture in a child after a blunt chest trauma during a traffic accident that presented with pneumomediastinum and pneumothorax.
CASE: A 14-year-old girl was referred for pneumomediastinum. Her physical examination was normal except subcutaneous emphysema, edema and tenderness in the cervical area, hoarseness, facial and extremity abrasions and ecchymoses. C

BACKGROUND: Cast bronchitis is a rare but potentially fatal condition caused by the accumulation of mucus in the bronchial tree usually secondary to infection, inflammation, or vascular stasis. Air leakage is an uncommon presentation of cast bronchitis. We report on three children with cast bronchitis who presented with acute air leakage as the main clinical feature.
METHODS: All three patients underwent bronchoscopic evaluation that led to a diagnosis and removal of bronchial casts.
RESULTS: Pathologic examination of casts from all three patients showed a mucoid substance with eosinophilic

BACKGROUND: Pneumomediastinum occurs in up to 10% of patients with blunt thoracic and cervical trauma. Mandatory evaluation of all patients with bronchoscopy and esophageal imaging to exclude a major injury has been recommended. There is little data on the safety or efficacy of this approach. We evaluated the incidence of major injuries associated with pneumomediastinum, the accuracy of diagnostic modalities, and the results of observation versus aggressive evaluation.
METHODS: Medical records of all blunt trauma patients diagnosed with pneumomediastinum and/or aerodigestive tract injury betw

OBJECTIVE: We report our experience with CT-guided percutaneous catheter drainage of loculated thoracic air collections in mechanically ventilated patients with acute lung injury or acute respiratory distress syndrome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine critically ill patients had 17 air collections (13 pneumothoraces, three pneumatoceles, one tension pneumomediastinum) that either developed despite the presence of standard surgical chest tubes or were in loculated sites that were difficult to access. All nine patients were ventilated mechanically for a clinical diagnosis of acute respiratory distre

We describe a 42-year-old man with dermatomyositis and interstitial lung disease who presented with anterior neck pain and dyspnoea. Chest radiographs showed subcutaneous emphysema, pneumomediastinum and diffuse reticulonodular infiltration in both lungs. After the administration of high doses of prednisolone, an improvement of pulmonary function and respiratory symptoms was observed but the pneumomediastinum persists 12 months after diagnosis, and without any complication. We review the cases that have been reported thus far of pneumomediastinum associated with dermatomyositis and discuss the

CT is seldom employed in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), mostly due to problems in transporting and monitoring these severely ill patients. We reviewed the findings of 74 ARDS patients who underwent chest CT. Lung opacities were bilateral in almost all patients and dependent in most cases (86%). The opacities were patchy (42%), homogeneous (23%), ground glass (8%) or mixed (27%). Opacities prevailed in basal regions (68%) compared to hilar and apical ones. Air bronchograms were frequently seen in areas of consolidation (89%). In contrast with previous reports, pleural effusion was

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the robotic assisted bronchoscope system for localizing and removing the spring coils that placed in the peripheral lung of beagle dogs. Methods: The study was conducted from June 18th to June 20th, 2021. Metallic lung coils were placed as the simulated lesions to the periphery of the lungs of two adult male beagle dogs using a bronchoscope under general anesthesia. The navigation path was planned by the navigation function that built in the robotic bronchoscope system. After training, the doctors operated the robotic bronchoscope system t

OBJECTIVES: Sleeve resection is the operation of choice in patients with centrally located tumours, in order to avoid a pneumonectomy. Most surgeons protect the bronchial anastomoses with tissue to prevent insufficiencies. The purpose of this study is to report on outcome of unwrapped bronchial anastomoses, especially after neoadjuvant chemo- or chemoradiotherapy.
METHODS: Between 2000 and 2010, 103 patients [59 years (range 16-80), 40 females] underwent bronchial sleeve resections without coverage of the anastomosis with a tissue flap. We retrospectively reviewed the data for morbidity, mort

INTRODUCTION: Mycobacterium xenopi is one of the most common agents responsible for nontubercular mycobacterial pulmonary disease on AIDS patients. These lesions have been studied with conventional radiography, while CT has been used in patients with aspecific mycobacterioses or non-AIDS pulmonary conditions from Mycobacterium xenopi.
PURPOSE: We investigated the yield of CT in the study of lung lesions from Mycobacterium xenopi in AIDS patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined 12 AIDS patients with pulmonary lesions from Mycobacterium xenopi, patients age ranged 30 to 46 years. All patien

OBJECTIVES: Congenital cystic lesions of the lung are uncommon but share similar embryologic and clinical characteristics. The purpose of this study is to review our institutional experience of congenital cystic lung disease, emphasizing the clinical spectrum of the disease related to age, and present some cases with unusual clinical manifestations.
PATIENTS: Between 1962 and 1996, 26 patients (9 females and 17 males) under 15 years old underwent evaluation and surgical treatment for congenital cystic lung disease. Seven patients were under 1 year old, and 19 were in over 1 year old. There we

pneumomediastinum (PM) occurs in approximately 0.1% of newborns but its incidence is underestimatedbecause it is often asymptomatic. PM generally has a benign course. Our knowledge of PM is insufficient, and its management is mainly based on the best practice and experience of each hospital rather thanon evidence-based data.

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is reported in patients with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) and influenza infection independently, usually associated with noninvasive and mechanical ventilation. We report a case of spontaneous pneumomediastinum in a patient with COVID-19 and influenza coinfection. A 58-year-old male admitted with shortness of breath, diagnosed with COVID-19 and influenza infection. A computed tomography angiogram showed pneumomediastinum. He was treated conservatively with 15 L of oxygen, remdesivir, convalescent plasma, and oseltamivir. The case is being reported for its u
