Grasping rehabilitation using motor imagery with or without neurofeedback after tetraplegia: a study protocol for a bicentric randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tetraplegia causes extensive sensorimotor deficits affecting activity, participation and quality of life. People with C6-C7 tetraplegia can learn to grasp objects by performing wrist extension movement (ie, tenodesis grasp), and motor imagery (MI) added to rehabilitation significantly improved tenodesis grasp. We hypothesise that this improvement can be further boosted by adding neurofeedback during MI. Thus, we design a randomised controlled trial investigating the effect of MI training on grasping ability in people with C6-C7 tetraplegia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will perform

Is grip strength linked to body composition and cardiovascular risk markers in primary schoolchildren? Cross-sectional data from three African countries.

OBJECTIVES: Muscular strength represents a specific component of health-related fitness. Hand grip strength (HGS) is used as an indicator for musculoskeletal fitness in children. HGS can also be used as a marker of cardiometabolic risk, but most available HGS data are derived from Western high-income countries. Therefore, this study examines whether HGS is associated with body composition and markers of cardiovascular risk in children from three sub-Saharan African countries. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Public primary schools (grade 1-4) in Taabo (Côte d'Ivoire), Gqeberha (South

Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) Criteria are Strongly Associated With Malnutrition, Depression, Falls, and Fractures in High-Risk Older Persons.

OBJECTIVES: Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) provides cut-points based on muscle weakness (low grip strength) and slowness (poor gait speed) for low-risk populations; however, it is unknown if these criteria apply to high-risk populations. We examined the association between SDOC criteria and important health status indicators in high-risk older persons. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: 356 community-dwelling older persons (median age: 79 years, interquartile range: 73, 83; 75.2% women) attending a falls and fractures clinic in Melbourne, Australi

Evaluation of dysphagia in patients with sarcopenia in a rehabilitation setting: insights from the vicious cycle.

PURPOSE: Nutritional deficits are known to cause sarcopenia. There is also evidence that sarcopenia itself may cause dysphagia, and swallowing problems are among the reasons for patients to have nutritional deficits. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of nutritional deficits and dysphagia in patients with or without sarcopenia. METHODS: 128 patients residing in a rehabilitation clinic are evaluated with EAT-10, MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory, Functional Oral Intake Status scale, Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and Beck Depression Index. All patients were then classified according t

Association between dietary inflammatory index and sarcopenia development in Polish population.

Chronic low-grade inflammation associated with nutritional deficits and physical inactivity plays a key role in development and progression of skeletal muscle diseases. The study was designed to assess the inflammatory status in relation to dietary inflammatory index (DII) in sarcopenia. One hundred twenty-one individuals aged 60-96 years were allocated into sarcopenia (n = 38), probable sarcopenia (n = 38) and non-sarcopenia (n = 45) group based on the algorithm of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2). The isometric strength of hand grip was measured using a ha

Effective Timing of Curcumin Ingestion to Attenuate Eccentric Exercise-Induced Muscle Soreness in Men.

Curcumin is known to have potent anti-inflammatory effects. We have reported that acute curcumin ingestion attenuates eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage. This study aimed to examine the effect of curcumin ingestion timing (before or after exercise) on the changes in muscle damage markers after eccentric exercise. In this randomized, single-blind, parallel design study, 24 healthy young men performed 30 maximal isokinetic (120º/s) eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors using an isokinetic dynamometer. Subjects were randomly assigned to ingest 180 mg/d of oral curcumin either 7 d befo

The effect of oscillating-energy manual therapy on lateral epicondylitis: a randomized, placebo-control, double-blinded study.

Symptoms of lateral epicondylitis (LE) are attributed to degenerative changes and inflammatory reactions in the common extensor tendon induced by microscopic tears in the tissue after repetitive or overload functions of the wrist and hand extensor muscles. Conventional treatments, provided on the premise of inflammatory basis of LE, have shown 39-80% failure rate. An alternative approach suggests that symptoms of LE could be due to active tender points developed in the origin of hand and wrist extensor muscles after overuse or repetitive movements. Oscillating-energy Manual Therapy (OEMT), als

Effects of 3 months of multi-nutrient supplementation on the immune system and muscle and respiratory function of older adults in aged care (The Pomerium Study): protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Immunosenescence leads to increased morbidity and mortality associated with viral infections and weaker vaccine responses. This has been well documented for seasonal influenza and the current pandemic with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), which disproportionately impact older adults, particularly those in residential aged care facilities. Inadequate nutrient intakes associated with impaired immunity, respiratory and muscle function are likely to augment the effects of immunosenescence. In this study, we test whether the impact of inadequate nutrition can be reversed using multi-nutrient su
