MR evidence of temporomandibular joint fluid and condyle marrow alterations: occurrence in asymptomatic volunteers and symptomatic patients.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the frequency and amount of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) fluid, as well as the frequency and type of condyle marrow alterations in asymptomatic volunteers and compare to patients with TMJ pain and dysfunction. Proton-density and T2 weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images of the TMJs of 62 asymptomatic volunteers and 58 symptomatic patients were analysed for fluid and condyle marrow alterations as well as disk position. The amount of fluid (increased T2 signal) was characterized as none, minimal, moderate or marked and related to the disk position. The

Insulin-like growth factor-II and bioactive proteins containing a part of the E-domain of pro-insulin-like growth factor-II.

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II is considered to function as an important fetal growth factor, which is structurally and functionally related to IGF-I and proinsulin. At least in vitro, IGF-II actions are mediated through the IGF-I receptor and to a lesser extent the insulin receptor. After birth, the function of IGF-II is less clear although in adults the serum level of IGF-II exceeds that of IGF-I several fold. The IGF-II gene is maternally imprinted, with exception of the liver and several parts of the brain, where it is expressed from both alleles. The regulation, organization, and tra

Computed tomographic study of the patterns of oesteoarthritic change which occur on the mandibular condyle.

The aim of this study was to investigate which parts of the articular surface of the mandibular condyle are involved in osteoarthritic (OA) change (the occurring pattern) and the relationship of these patterns to clinical signs and symptoms. The computed tomographic (CT) images and clinical records of patients with OA involvement of one or both of their temporomandibular joints (TMJs) were reviewed (OA changes confirmed by CT; 684 TMJs included). The condylar articular surface was divided into nine imaginary sections on the CT images: antero-medial (AM), antero-central (AC), antero-lateral (AL

The PATCH study: Prevalence of Hearing Loss During Ageing and Treatment Choices in Osteogenesis Imperfecta: A Danish Nationwide Register-Based Cohort Study.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a group of rare hereditary collagen disorders. Hearing loss (HL) is a known complication linked to changes in the bones of the middle ear seen in OI. We aimed to determine the prevalence, age at debut, incidence, and risk of HL, surgery on bones of the middle ear, and use of hearing aids. A Danish nationwide, register-based cohort study. Data were extracted from the Danish National Patient register. Anyone with an OI diagnosis between January 1st 1977 and December 31st 2018, matched 1:5 with a reference population (Ref.Pop) on birthyear and sex, were included. 8

[Optimizing orthodontic treatment in patients taking bisphosphonates].

Bisphosphonates have unique pharmacological characteristics unlike those of any other drug group. Millions of adults take oral bisphosphonates for long-term treatment of osteoporosis and osteopenia; some of these people will most likely also seek orthodontic treatment. Adverse dental effects from bisphosphonates have been reported, including decreased tooth movement, impaired bone healing, and osteonecrosis in the mandible and the maxilla. Osteonecrosis has been rarely observed after bisphosphonate use for osteoporosis. However, adverse drug effects might occur more frequently in orthodontic p

Molecular Characterization of Three Canine Models of Human Rare Bone Diseases: Caffey, van den Ende-Gupta, and Raine Syndromes.

One to two percent of all children are born with a developmental disorder requiring pediatric hospital admissions. For many such syndromes, the molecular pathogenesis remains poorly characterized. Parallel developmental disorders in other species could provide complementary models for human rare diseases by uncovering new candidate genes, improving the understanding of the molecular mechanisms and opening possibilities for therapeutic trials. We performed various experiments, e.g. combined genome-wide association and next generation sequencing, to investigate the clinico-pathological features

Histopathological features of hypertrophic bone mass of temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA): An explanation of pathogenesis of TMJA.

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA) is a severe organic disease with progressive limitation of the mouth opening. Histopathologically, a residual joint space is reported to consist of fibrous tissue and/or cartilage, indicating two types of interface (osteo-fibrous and osteo-chondral) of residual joint space. It is well known that adverse mechanical stress results in pathological changes of osteoarthritis and enthesopathy in these interfaces. What would happen pathologically in these interfaces of TMJA under repeated mandible movement has not been elucidated. Fourteen tissue samples of re

p19 INK4d controls hematopoietic stem cells in a cell-autonomous manner during genotoxic stress and through the microenvironment during aging.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are characterized by the capacity for self-renewal and the ability to reconstitute the entire hematopoietic compartment. Thrombopoietin maintains adult HSCs in a quiescent state through the induction of cell cycle inhibitors p57(Kip2) and p19(INK4d). Using the p19(INK4d-/-) mouse model, we investigated the role of p19(INK4d) in basal and stress-induced hematopoiesis. We demonstrate that p19(INK4d) is involved in the regulation of HSC quiescence by inhibition of the G0/G1 cell cycle transition. Under genotoxic stress conditions, the absence of p19(INK4d) in HSCs

Bone metastasis: histological changes and pathophysiological mechanisms in osteolytic or osteosclerotic localizations. A review.

The development of a bone metastasis involves interactions between the tumor cells, the bone marrow microenvironment and the bone cells themselves. A better understanding of the pathophysiological changes occurring in bone metastasis can be obtained from histopathological examination of invaded specimens. This review focuses on the main molecular mechanisms implied in the localization and growth of malignant cells in the bone marrow. The corresponding histologic developmental stages are illustrated both in osteolytic (or mixed metastasis) or in the osteosclerotic forms by histological analysis

2-Butoxyethanol model of haemolysis and disseminated thrombosis in female rats: a preliminary study of the vascular mechanism of osteoarthritis in the temporomandibular joint.

Female rats develop haemolytic anaemia and disseminated thrombosis and infarction in multiple organs, including bone, when exposed to 2-butoxyethanol (BE). There is growing evidence that vascular occlusion of the subchondral bone may play a part in some cases of osteoarthritis. The subchondral bone is the main weight bearer as well as the source of the blood supply to the mandibular articular cartilage. Vascular occlusion is thought to be linked to sclerosis of the subchondral bone associated with disintegration of the articular cartilage. The aim of this study was to find out whether this mod

Erdheim-Chester disease: MR imaging, anatomic, and histopathologic correlation of orbital involvement.

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare form of histiocytosis of unknown origin characterized by tissue infiltration by lipid-laden histiocytes. Typically, the diaphyseal and metaphyseal portions of the tubular bones are affected, leading to a characteristic radiographic pattern of bone sclerosis. Orbital involvement is not infrequent and is manifested by exophthalmos and periorbital xanthomatous lesions, with associated visual problems. This case report documents imaging and pathologic findings in a patient with ECD with extensive orbital involvement.

The relationship between proximal pole blood flow and the subjective assessment of increased density of the proximal pole in acute scaphoid fractures.

The cause and importance of increased density of the proximal pole of the scaphoid seen in radiographs after an acute fracture were investigated. Blood flow to the proximal poles of 32 nonsurgically treated scaphoid fractures were assessed 1 to 2 weeks after injury by measuring their uptake of gadopentetate dimeglumine with dynamic magnetic resonance imaging and calculating its steepest slope and percentage of enhancement values. Initial (week 0) and week 8 scaphoid series radiographs were independently assessed by 2 observers for increased proximal pole density; both agreed that the density h
