Expanding the cleft phenotype: the dental characteristics of unaffected parents of Australian children with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of isolated clefts of the lip and/or palate remains obscure. Unaffected family members are treated as if their genetic risks are equivalent and low. Given the number of genes associated with both clefting and dental anomalies, the hypothesis that such anomalies contribute to the cleft phenotype should be explored. AIM: To describe the dental characteristics of parents of children with non-syndromic cleft lip ± palate. DESIGN: Unaffected parents of Australian children with a cleft of the lip ± palate underwent dental examination including radiographs, photographs, an

Deep learning with convolution neural network detecting mesiodens on panoramic radiographs: comparing four models.

The aim of this study was to develop an optimal, simple, and lightweight deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) model to detect the presence of mesiodens on panoramic radiographs. A total of 628 panoramic radiographs with and without mesiodens were used as training, validation, and test data. The training, validation, and test dataset were consisted of 218, 51, and 40 images with mesiodens and 203, 55, and 61 without mesiodens, respectively. Unclear panoramic radiographs for which the diagnosis could not be accurately determined and other modalities were required for the final diagno

Supernumerary teeth vary depending on gender.

The presence of supernumerary teeth (ST) is a dental developmental anomaly of patterning and morphogenesis. Its variability of morphology, location and developmental timing can shed light on its etiology. In this work we report ST patterns. Orthopantomograms of 1,166 pediatric subjects were examined and the morphology, location and timing of the formation of ST were determined. The frequency of supernumerary teeth in the studied population was 2.3% (n = 27). Twenty-five subjects presented one ST. Maxilla midline was the most commonly affected region (nine cases). We noted high incidence of con

Reliability of panoramic radiographs for identifying supernumerary teeth in children.

OBJECTIVES. To evaluate the reliability of panoramic radiographs (PRs) for identifying supernumerary teeth (ST) and to determine whether the level of dental training of the observer influenced the identification of ST. METHODS. Seventy-five PRs were randomly selected from the patient records and 18 examiners independently rated 25 radiographs each, for specific risk factors as well as for a measure of adequacy. Subsequently, the results were paired with those of the other examiners who assessed the same set of PRs. Descriptive statistics were computed using Fisher's exact test, and kappa stati

Trichotillomania in children: the occult truth.

A major emphasis of modern-day pediatric dental care is a holistic approach to children and the importance of treating them as individuals and not merely as patients with mouth diseases. We should not restrict ourselves to the oral cavity alone, but also explore the mind of an individual, for in it lays the hidden clue to successful management. In order to achieve this, we need to meet the mind of the child before meeting the mouth. Surmounting pressure on today's children builds a lot of anxiety in them, and this in turn is the foundation for various psychological problems. One such rare but

The influence of bone grafting age on dental abnormalities and alveolar bone height in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Individuals with total unilateral cleft lip, alveolus and palate, (UCLAP), bone grafted at three different ages were compared with regard to dental abnormalities and alveolar bone height in the cleft area. The primary groups, bone grafted prior to one year of age had fewer supernumerary teeth in the cleft area and a lower frequency of missing and severely malformed central incisors than the other groups. The early secondary group, bone grafted after eruption of the permanent incisors, showed the highest frequency of normal lateral incisors and the most favourable alveolar bone height in the cl

Teeth erupted from the buccal mucosa: simple odontogenic choristoma or accessory teeth?

The eruption of developed teeth from the buccal mucosa is a rare phenomenon in the head and neck region. Such phenomena are possibly choristomas, tumorlike masses of histologically normal tissue occurring in an abnormal position. However, the accurate classification of this abnormality remains debatable. This report describes a case of a congenital, maldevelopmental, and noncystic lesion in a 4-year-old girl without other anomalies. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of multiple supernumerary teeth forming in the buccal and zygomatic regions.

Incidental findings arising with cone beam computed tomography imaging of the orthodontic patient.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) of orthodontic patients is a diagnostic tool used increasingly in hospital and primary care settings. It offers a high-diagnostic yield, short scanning times, and a lower radiation dose than conventional computed tomography. This article reports on four incidental findings-that appear unrelated to the scan's original purpose-arising in patients for whom CBCT was carried out for orthodontic purposes. It underlines the need for complete reporting of the data set.

Completely impacted teeth in dentate and edentulous jaws.

Panoramic radiographs from 1026 patients were examined for the presence of completely impacted teeth. The prevalence of completely impacted teeth in the edentulous jaw was lower than that in the dentate jaw in both the upper and lower jaws. The prevalence of completely impacted third molars in the edentulous jaw was also lower than that in the dentate jaw. However, there was no difference in the prevalence of completely impacted canine teeth and completely impacted anterior maxillary supernumerary teeth (mesiodens) in the edentulous jaw. These findings may indicate that completely impacted can

Nonsurgical treatment of Brodie bite assisted by 3-dimensional planning and assessment.

This case report describes the nonsurgical treatment of an adolescent patient with a severe transverse discrepancy presented as a Brodie bite and retrognathic mandible. Distraction osteogenesis has been often used for similar cases in the literature. However, in this patient, a fixed appliance with 1 maxillary extraction combined with a functional appliance was used to resolve the transverse discrepancy with natural growth. After the orthodontic treatment, the impinging teeth and Brodie bite were corrected with a favorable occlusion and profile. Retention at the 3-year follow-up showed improve

Mineralized nodule formation by cultures of human dental pulp-derived fibroblasts.

Pulp fibroblasts were isolated from human deciduous and supernumerary teeth and cultured in vitro. With continued culture in normal tissue-culture medium, six pulp fibroblast strains formed cell nodules after 10-15 days. By electron microscopy the nodules had matrix vesicles, and needle-shaped crystals associated with a dense network of collagen fibrils. The crystalline material exhibited a pattern consistent with hydroxyapatite when nodules were examined by X-ray diffractometry. Furthermore, the cells showed high levels of alkaline phosphatase activity, which could be increased more than seve

Nance-Horan syndrome-The oral perspective on a rare disease.

The present study describes seven patients with Nance-Horan syndrome, all referred to a specialized oral care unit in the Central Denmark Region. A literature search on "Nance Horan Syndrome" resulted in 53 publications among which 29 reported on dental findings. Findings reported in these papers have been systematized to obtain an overview of the reported findings and the terminology on dental morphology. All seven patients included in the present study showed deviations of crown morphology on incisors and/or molars. The only consistent and very clear dental aberration was alterations in the

A rare bilateral Tessier no. 6 and 7 clefts.

The authors describe a patient with bilateral Tessier no. 6 and no. 7 clefts. The case consists of macrostomia combined with maxillary, zygomatico-orbito-temporal deformities, dental anomalies and mandibular retrusion. In addition, the cleft is located bilaterally in the maxillary arch with a double deciduous posterior dentition. This is rare. The clinical and radiological features are reported and the treatment plans are discussed.

Characterization of mesenchymal progenitor cells in crown and root pulp from human mesiodentes.

OBJECTIVE: Mesiodentes are usually found in the central position of the upper or lower jaw as supernumerary teeth. Here, we obtained 10 mesiodentes and three permanent teeth (PT) and separated the dental pulp (DP) from these into crown and root portions. We then characterized and compared the isolated crown portion-derived cells (crown cells) with root portion-derived cells (root cells) using a range of in vitro assays. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Crown cells and root cells were examined for cell surface marker expression, colony-forming unit-fibroblast (CFU-F), cell proliferation, cell cycle char
