Feature Analysis of the Vowel [a:] in Individuals With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Healthy Controls.

BACKGROUND: In addition to impairing the lung function, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) also affects phonatory characteristics. Recent research highlights the potential of voice as a digital biomarker to support clinical decision-making. While machine learning (ML) can detect disease patterns from acoustic features, clinical relevance requires understanding the relationship between the disorder and acoustic features. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates both statistical and clinical significance using Baseline Acoustic (BLA) and Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) features wi

Content Validity Assessment of a Virtual Patient-Based Learning Platform for TMD Education among Orofacial Pain Experts.

INTRODUCTION: To compensate for inadequate clinical exposure to temporomandibular disorders (TMD) among dental students during predoctoral training, a virtual patient-based learning (VPBL) platform was developed for integration into the TMD predoctoral curriculum. This study tested the VPBL's content validity among 10 orofacial pain (OFP) experts responsible for TMD education at U.S. institutions. METHODS: We developed a digital platform of 20 virtual patients (VPs) using Articulate Storyline, featuring common OFP conditions (based on Diagnostic Criteria for TMD) and divided into four modules

How Do We Address and Treat the Trauma of a 16-Year-Old Girl, Unaccompanied Minor, and Her Rape-Born Son? A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The child psychiatry unit of the Cochin Hospital in Paris is specialized in a transcultural clinical approach and treatment of psychotraumatism. The clinical demands addressed to the service often combine several levels of vulnerability: recent migration, repeated and intentional traumas, isolation and breach in family bonds sometimes precarious living conditions. Mastering how to approach trauma content adapting to the person's temporality while taking into account the individual, family and collective dimensions, is a key driver to the clinical intervention (of our approach). The agreement of phonetic transcriptions between paediatric speech and language therapists transcribing a disordered speech sample.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapists (SLTs) regularly use phonetic transcription to record and analyse typical and disordered speech. Phonetic transcription is highly demanding of auditory perceptual skills so researchers are sceptical about its accuracy and reliability. The literature describes how phonetic transcription is prone to auditory illusions and biases, such as a preference to transcribe speech sounds from the transcriber's own language. Few empirical research studies have calculated agreement amongst transcribers where a range of agreement scores have been reported (51%-97%).

Neurophysiological and cognitive effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in three girls with Rett Syndrome with chronic language impairments.

BACKGROUND: this study was based on both neurophysiological decelerated activity and communication deficits in Rett Syndrome (RTT). AIMS: the aim was to examine the neurophysiological and cognitive effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) in three girls with RTT with chronic language impairments. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: we proposed an integrated intervention: tDCS and cognitive empowerment applied to language in order to enhance speech production (new functional sounds and new words). Because maximal gains usually are achieved when tDCS is coupled with behavioral training, w

Morphologic, functional, and occlusal characterization of mandibular lateral displacement malocclusion.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular lateral displacement (MLD) is clinically characterized by deviation of the chin, facial asymmetry, dental midline discrepancy, crossbite in the posterior region, and high prevalence of internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint. Morphologic and functional characteristics of MLD should be clarified to correct and prevent this malocclusion. METHODS: We examined the morphologic features, occlusal scheme, and functional behavior of MLD in 116 patients. Facial morphology was examined with posteroanterior cephalograms, occlusion guidance on the articulator after fa

Left-hemispheric dominance for articulation: a prospective study on acute ischaemic dysarthria at different localizations.

Dysarthria is a frequent symptom in cerebral ischaemia. However, speech characteristics of these patients have not previously been investigated in relation to lesion site in a prospective study. We investigated the auditory perceptual features in 62 consecutive patients with dysarthria due to a single, non-space-occupying cerebral infarction confirmed by MRI. Standardized speech samples of all patients were stored within 72 h after stroke onset using a digital tape recorder. Speech samples were assessed independently by two experienced speech therapists, who were unaware of the clinical and ne

Experimentally gained insight - based proposal apropos the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

An impeded blood flow through the femoral head is incriminated in the etiopathogenesis of osteonecrosis of the femoral head. The disorder is either primary (idiopathic avascular osteonecrosis) or secondary to one condition or another, say, corticosteroid medication, fracture of the neck, coagulation defects, physical or thermal damage, storage disorders, alcoholism, and infectious, autoimmune as also marrow infiltrating diseases. In the wake of the necrosis, several mediators are released in increased amounts, prime among which is the vascular endothelial growth factor. The intermediates recru

It's All in Your Head: A Qualitative Examination of the Help-Seeking Experiences of Women Suffering Postpartum Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum psychosis (PPP) is a rare, yet severe, perinatal psychiatric disorder that typically presents abruptly within several days after childbirth and requires urgent in-patient psychiatric care. Despite its severity, postpartum psychosis remains underrepresented in research and can be poorly understood in clinical healthcare settings, particularly regarding the detection of the disorder. AIMS: This exploratory qualitative analysis examines lived-experience perspectives on help-seeking, including barriers encountered when help-seeking, to develop a clearer understanding of the

New-Onset OCD and Juvenile Enthesitis-Related Arthritis after COVID-19 (Three Cases).

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions. There is a mounting body of evidence suggesting a link between OCD and inflammation. Neuropsychiatric deteriorations have been reported to follow COVID-19 infections, including OCD. Additionally, symptomatic arthritis has also been reported following COVID-19 infection. We aim to describe post-COVID-19 clinical deteriorations presenting to our multidisciplinary immune behavioral health clinic. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-one prescreened patients were evaluated in our c

Evaluation of the progress of therapy in patients with cleft lip, jaw and palate, using voice analysis--a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The defective morphology of the hard and soft palate in patients with cleft lip, jaw and/or palate in conjunction with speech, voice and hearing disorders can considerably restrict the ability to communicate. Changes in vocal timbre and the centripetal displacement of articulation are characteristic of cleft palate speech. There has not been a uniform diagnostic method in cleft centers to date which makes possible the analysis, documentation and comparison of changes in timbre. In this study we assessed a computer-aided evaluation process to determine objective vocal timbre paramet

Methodological fragmentation and integration priorities in psychedelic-assisted therapy assessment: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) is an emerging complex intervention for psychiatric and existential conditions (i.e., forms of distress related to meaning, mortality, and identity, such as that arising in life-threatening illness); however, a systematic characterization of the evaluation methods used across the entire clinical intervention remains incomplete. This scoping review synthesizes the scientific literature on the methodologies and frameworks for evaluating PAT, covering pre-session screening, acute experience, intervention processes, post-session integration, clinica

Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomal miR-199a-3p inhibits the MAPK4/NF-κB signaling pathway to relieve osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: There is currently no effective treatment for osteoarthritis (OA), which is the most common joint disorder leading to disability. Although human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) are promising OA treatments, their use is limited by the condition itself, and understanding of the underlying mechanisms of OA is lacking. AIM: To explore the specific molecular mechanism by which hUC-MSC-derived exosomal miR-199a-3p improves OA. METHODS: Sodium iodoacetate was injected into rat articulations to construct an animal model of OA. Interleukin (IL)-1β was used to induce human

An Imitation-Based Treatment for Ataxic Dysarthria: A Retrospective Multiple Single-Case Study.

Background/Objectives: Ataxic dysarthria is a speech disorder characterized by the impaired coordination of movement due to cerebellar dysfunction. Despite its clinical relevance, few studies have explored its rehabilitation. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of IMITAF, an adaptive computer-based clinical treatment protocol originally developed to target aphasia with a novel population comprising individuals with ataxic dysarthria. The approach leverages principles of procedural motor learning. Methods: Ten patients with ataxic dysarthria due to neurodegenerative disease were retr

Development of receptive vocabulary and verbal intelligence in Japanese children with unilateral hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: In the past, it was believed that unilateral hearing loss has a minimal impact on the speech and language development in children. However, several studies have suggested that some school-age children with unilateral hearing loss have learning impairments in language. In the present study, we first examined whether preschool-age children with unilateral severe-to-profound hearing loss (UHL) have delays in the development of receptive vocabulary and verbal intelligence. In the follow-up study, we tested the children again after school admission. The objective of the present study was
