Sorption dynamics of organic and inorganic phosphorus compounds in soil.

Phosphorus retention in soils is influenced by the form of P added. The potential impact of one P compound on the sorption of other P compounds in soils has not been widely reported. Sorption isotherms were utilized to quantify P retention by benchmark soils from Indiana, Missouri, and North Carolina when P was added as inorganic P (Pi) or organic P (beta-D-glucose-6-phosphate, G6P; adenosine 5'-triphosphate, ATP; and myoinositol hexaphosphate, IP6) and to determine whether soil P sorption by these organic P compounds and Pi was competitive. Isotherm supernatants were analyzed for pH and total

Environmental Fate, Soil Ecological Responses and Fruit Quality Impacts of Emerging Contaminants (Antibiotics) in Orchard Ecosystems: A Review.

With the rapid development of intensive animal husbandry, the widespread use of livestock and poultry manure as organic fertilizers has become a major anthropogenic source of antibiotic contamination in agricultural soils. Antibiotics, classified as "emerging contaminants" owing to their persistence, biological activity, and potential ecotoxicity, undergo environmental fate processes such as adsorption-desorption, migration, transformation, and degradation upon entering orchard soils, with their behaviors regulated by multiple factors, including soil physicochemical properties, microbial commu

Fate of the nitrification inhibitor 3,4-dimethylpyrazole in sandy arable soils: Low leachability mainly due to sorption in topsoil.

Despite its widespread usage in agriculture, the environmental fate of 3,4-dimethylpyrazole (DMP), the active part of the nitrification inhibitor DMPP, is relatively little investigated, especially with regards to the risk of leaching. We therefore used a combination of batch, column and lab studies to determine the fate of DMP and its degradation product 3-methylpyrazole-4-carboxylic acid (3-MPA) on sandy soils at conditions representative for a temperate climate such as that found in Northern Europe. DMP was degraded fastest in non-sterilized topsoil and slowest in sterilized subsoil. Manure

Advances in soil carbon monitoring and management: tools and strategies for climate-smart and sustainable agriculture.

Soil carbon is an essential aspect of ecosystem health, acting to alter nutrient cycling, agricultural yields, and climatic regulation through carbon dioxide sequestration from the atmosphere in stable organic moieties. To measure current stocks, define the distribution of soil carbon in space and depth, and create efficient management strategies, precise soil carbon characterisation is necessary. This review aims to address the current fragmentation in methods and practices across agroecosystems, attempts to summarise recent developments in soil carbon monitoring tools and critically assess s

Toward Low-Emission Agriculture: Synergistic Contribution of Inorganic Nitrogen and Organic Fertilizers to GHG Emissions and Strategies for Mitigation.

Nitrogen (N) and organic-source fertilizers in agriculture are important to sustain crop production for feeding the growing global population. However, their use can result in significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), which are important climate drivers. This review discusses the interactive effects, uncovering both additive and suppressive outcomes of emissions under various soil and climatic conditions. In addition to examining the effects of nitrogen and the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), it is crucial to comprehen

Biogenic and fossil main greenhouse gas emissions of dairy, beef, pig and poultry systems.

Conventional analyses of the carbon footprint of livestock systems do not consider the relationships between the characteristics and sources of each greenhouse gas (GHGs; CH4, N2O, CO2) and the different livestock systems. This study aimed to assess the carbon footprint of a variety of livestock systems, including different animal categories (dairy cattle, beef cattle, pig and poultry) and production circumstances (lowland and mountain areas). An attributional cradle-to-gate-of-the-farm Life Cycle Assessment was used, considering the emission pattern of each GHG and distinguishing fossil and b

Phytotoxicity of trihalomethanes and trichloroacetic acid on Vigna radiata and Allium cepa plant models.

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are a concern due to their presence in chlorinated wastewater, sewage treatment plant discharge, and surface water, and their potential for environmental toxicity. Despite some attention to their ecotoxicity, little is known about the phytotoxicity of DBPs. This study aimed to evaluate the individual and combined phytotoxicity of four trihalomethanes (THMs: trichloromethane (TCM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and tribromomethane (TBM) and their mixture (THM4)), and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) using genotoxic and cytotoxic assays. On the tropical soils; The influence of organic matter (OM) on phosphate bioavailability.

Application of organic manure (OM) and crop residues in agricultural soils can potentially influence positively or negatively the availability of soil phosphorus (P) through soil mineralization, sorption, or desorption of soil-bound P. Traditionally, the addition of OM can reduce the capacity of the soil colloids to adsorb P, thus increasing the release of P in soil solution, but also added OM can increase the adsorption site and increase the fixation or sorption of P to soil colloids, thus reducing the availability of P in soil solution and loss to the environment. The highly weathered tropic

High Prevalence of Human-Associated Escherichia coli in Wetlands Located in Eastern France.

Escherichia coli that are present in the rivers are mostly brought by human and animal feces. Contamination occurs mostly through wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) outflows and field amendment with sewage sludge or manure. However, the survival of these isolates in river-associated wetlands remains unknown. Here, we assessed E. coli population structure in low-anthropized wetlands located along three floodplains to identify the major source of contamination of wetlands, whose functioning is different from the rivers. We retrieved 179 E. coli in water samples collected monthly from 19 sites loc

Phytoremediation of alkaline soils co-contaminated with cadmium and tetracycline antibiotics using the ornamental hyperaccumulators Mirabilis jalapa L. and Tagetes patula L.

The co-contamination of farmland soils with heavy metals and antibiotics from the application of livestock and poultry manures poses great threats to human health. Phytoremediation might be a good solution to this problem. A pot culture experiment was conducted to evaluate the remediation capacity of two ornamental hyperaccumulators, namely, Mirabilis jalapa L. and Tagetes patula L., in alkaline soils co-contaminated with cadmium (Cd) and tetracycline antibiotics (TCs). The growth of M. jalapa and T. patula was significantly influenced by the co-contaminated soil. In treatments with TCs alone,

Effect of redox potential and pH status on degradation and adsorption behavior of tylosin in dairy lagoon sediment suspension.

Veterinary antibiotics are the most heavily used pharmaceuticals in intensive animal farming operation. Their presence in the environment through application of manure and lagoon water as fertilizer in agricultural fields has generated a growing concern in recent years due to potential threat to the ecosystem and the risk they pose to human and animal health. Among the antibiotics, tylosin, a macrolide class of antibiotics, has been widely used for disease prevention and growth promotion in swine, cattle/dairy, and poultry production. To understand degradation and sorption behavior of tylosin

Biosecurity strategies for conserving valuable livestock genetic resources.

The foot and mouth disease (FMD) epidemic in the UK in 2001 highlighted the threat of infectious diseases to rare and valuable livestock and stimulated a renewed interest in biosecurity and conservation. However, not all diseases resemble FMD: their transmission routes and pathological effects vary greatly, so biosecurity strategies must take this into account. Realism is also needed as to which diseases to exclude and which will have to be tolerated. The aim should be to minimise disease generally and to exclude those diseases that threaten the existence of livestock or preclude their nationa

Ecological Responses of Maize Rhizosphere to Antibiotics Entering the Agricultural System in an Area with High Arsenicals Geological Background.

Metal(loid)s can promote the spread and enrichment of antibiotic resistance in the environmental ecosystem through a co-selection effect. Little is known about the ecological effects of entering antibiotics into the environment with long-term metal(loid)s' resistance profiles. Here, cow manure containing oxytetracycline (OTC) or sulfadiazine (SA) at four concentrations (0 (as control), 1, 10, and 100 mg/kg) was loaded to a maize cropping system in an area with high a arsenicals geological background. Results showed that exogenous antibiotics entering significantly changed the nutrient conditio

Aminipila butyrica gen. nov., sp. nov., a strictly anaerobic, arginine-decomposing bacterium isolated from a methanogenic reactor of cattle waste.

A strictly anaerobic bacterial strain (FH042T) was isolated from a methanogenic reactor treating waste from cattle farms. Cells were stained Gram-positive, straight to gently curved rods with polar flagella. The strain was asaccharolytic. The strain fermented amino acids (l-arginine, l-lysine and l-serine) as growth substrates and produced acetate and butyrate. The optimum temperature for growth was 30 °C and the optimum pH was 6.1-6.8. Oxidase, catalase and nitrate-reducing activities were negative. Hydrogen sulfide was produced. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain FH042T was 44.7±0.2 mol%.

Evaluation of antibiotic mobility in soil associated with swine-slurry soil amendment under cropping conditions.

Interest in identifying pools of antibacterial-resistance genes has grown over the last decade, with veterinary antibiotics (VAs) receiving particular attention. In this paper, a mesoscale study aimed at evaluating the vertical transport of common VAs-namely, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and lincosamides in agricultural soil subjected to drip irrigation-was performed under greenhouse conditions. Accordingly, leachates of cropped and uncropped soil, amended with swine-slurry leading to 19-38 μg kg(-1) (dry mass) antibiotics in the soil, were analyzed over the course of the pro

Microbiological Quality of Maize Silage in Relation to Agricultural Practices: A Four-Year Study.

Silage is a fundamental component of cattle feed, and its microbiological quality is critical for animal health and human safety. Improper ensiling conditions, such as oxygen exposure or inadequate acidification, can promote the growth of pathogens like Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium botulinum, and Bacillus cereus. This study aimed to evaluate the microbial status of maize silages and identify pre-ensiling factors influencing its hygienic safety. Over a four-year period, 406 silage samples were collected from cattle farms across Poland. The research evaluated general hygiene indicators an
