Osteosarcopenia: More Than the Sum of Its Parts? A Community-Based Study Across Sarcopenia Definitions.

Osteosarcopenia, the co-existence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia, is described as a geriatric syndrome arising from shared determinants of muscle and bone. We asked how far the prevalence of sarcopenia and osteosarcopenia depends on the definition of low muscle mass, whether osteoporosis and sarcopenia co-occur more often than expected under statistical independence, and whether the muscle-bone relationship is expressed in areal bone mineral density (BMD) or in femoral geometry. Cross-sectional study of 649 community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and over (72% women; mean age 71.5 years; mean

Abdominal aortic calcification is associated with decline in handgrip strength in the U.S. adult population ≥40 years of age.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The present study investigated the association between abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) and handgrip strength (HGS) and the ability of HGS to predict an increased AAC phenotype in adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: The analysis consisted of data for 3140 men and women aged ≥40 years (51.7% women) from the 2013-2014 NHANES. Lateral scans of the thoraco-lumbar spine (L1-L4) were scored for AAC using a validated 8-point scale (AAC-8); subjects with a score of ≥3 were considered at increased risk for cardiovascular disease due to a high AAC phenotype. HGS was assessed using a g

Nutritional status is the major factor affecting grip strength of African HIV patients before and during antiretroviral treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Low grip strength is a marker of frailty and a risk factor for mortality among HIV patients and other populations. We investigated factors associated with grip strength in malnourished HIV patients at referral to ART, and at 12 weeks and 2-3 years after starting ART. METHODS: The study involved HIV-infected Zambian and Tanzanian participants recruited to the NUSTART trial when malnourished (body mass index <18.5 kg/m2 ) and requiring ART. The relationship of grip strength to nutritional, infectious and demographic factors was assessed by multivariable linear regression at referral

Clinical predictors of elective total joint replacement in persons with end-stage knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Arthritis is a leading cause of disability in the United States. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has become the gold standard to manage the pain and disability associated with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Although more than 400,000 primary TKA surgeries are performed each year in the United States, not all individuals with knee OA elect to undergo the procedure. No clear consensus exists on criteria to determine who should undergo TKA. The purpose of this study was to determine which clinical factors will predict the decision to undergo TKA in individuals with end-stage knee OA. Knowled

Assessment of regional body composition, physical function and sarcopenia among peruvian women aging with HIV: A cross-sectional study.

Management of chronic conditions and optimization of overall health has become a primary global health concern in the care of people living with HIV in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART), particularly in lower-and-middle income countries where infrastructure for chronic disease management may be fragmented. Alterations in body composition can reflect important changes in musculoskeletal health, particularly among populations at risk for developing fat and muscle redistribution syndromes, such as women with HIV on ART. Given the lack of data on this topic in Latin America and

Efficacy and cost-effectiveness of a physiotherapy program for chronic rotator cuff pathology: a protocol for a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rotator cuff pathology (CRCP) is a common shoulder condition causing pain and disability. Physiotherapy is often the first line of management for CRCP yet there is little conclusive evidence to support or refute its effectiveness and no formal evaluation of its cost-effectiveness. METHODS/DESIGN: This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial will involve 200 participants with CRCP recruited from medical practices, outpatient departments and the community via print and radio media. Participants will be randomly allocated to a physiotherapy or placebo group using c

Muscle strength and HbA1c in geriatric patients with and without diabetes: a retrospective observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Handgrip strength (HGS) is a simple, reliable, and widely used biomarker of muscle strength and a key component in sarcopenia screening. Its potential role as an indicator of glycemic control has attracted increasing interest; however, the relationship between HGS and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in older adults remains insufficiently understood, particularly in populations characterized by frailty and multimorbidity. This study aimed to explore the relationship between HGS and HbA1c levels in older adults with and without diabetes mellitus (DM) and to evaluate the potential of

Examining factors contributing to the socioeconomic inequalities in handgrip strength among older adults in India: a decomposition analysis.

The purpose of this study was to examine (a) the socioeconomic status (SES)-related inequalities associated with handgrip strength (HGS); and (b) the extent to which several demographic, health, and behavioral factors contributed to such SES disparities in HGS among older adults in India. Data were drawn from the 2017-2018 wave 1 of the Longitudinal Ageing Study of India (LASI). The study sample included 27,707 older adults (13,199 men and 14,508 women) aged 60 years and older. HGS was assessed using a handheld Smedley's Hand Dynamometer with a cut-off of 19.5 kg for men and 12.5 kg for women.

Adductor canal block versus femoral nerve block combined with sciatic nerve block as an anesthetic technique for hindfoot and ankle surgery: A prospective, randomized noninferiority trial.

BACKGROUND: A femoral nerve block (FNB) in combination with a sciatic nerve block (SNB) is commonly used for anesthesia and analgesia in patients undergoing hindfoot and ankle surgery. The effects of FNB on motor function, related fall risk, and rehabilitation are controversial. An adductor canal block (ACB) potentially spares motor fibers in the femoral nerve, but the comparative effect on hindfoot and ankle surgeries between the 2 approaches is not yet well defined. We hypothesized that compared to FNB, ACB would cause less weakness in the quadriceps and produce similar pain scores during an

Increased resting metabolism in neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease that is characterized by neurocutaneous changes with multisystem involvement. A previous study with adults with NF1 revealed that changes in total energy expenditure were related to food consumption and body composition. Resting energy expenditure (REE), a measure of energy that the body expends to maintain vital functions, has not been assessed in NF1 populations. This study aimed to assess REE in individuals with NF1 using indirect calorimetry (IC) and evaluate its correlation with body composition and
