HIV and tuberculosis in prisons in sub-Saharan Africa.

Given the dual epidemics of HIV and tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa and evidence suggesting a disproportionate burden of these diseases among detainees in the region, we aimed to investigate the epidemiology of HIV and tuberculosis in prison populations, describe services available and challenges to service delivery, and identify priority areas for programmatically relevant research in sub-Saharan African prisons. To this end, we reviewed literature on HIV and tuberculosis in sub-Saharan African prisons published between 2011 and 2015, and identified data from only 24 of the 49 countries in

Screening tools for maternal mental health in Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Maternal health during pregnancy and the postnatal period encompasses mental health, which is a key aspect in enhancing a positive outcome. Despite screening for other possible complications during pregnancy and the postnatal period, very little attention has been paid to screening for mental health. Screening is a key tool in early diagnosis and, eventually, timely diagnosis and management in cases where complications arise. AIM: This study aimed to assess the available maternal mental health screening tools and compare the outcome on their utilization during pregnancy and postna

The social and economic burden of retinopathy of prematurity: screening, treatment, and health policy perspectives in a transnational narrative review.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading preventable cause of childhood blindness, particularly among premature infants. This transnational narrative review synthesizes international evidence on the economic and social burden of ROP from 2003 to 2025, focusing on the cost-effectiveness of screening, diagnostic imaging, and treatment strategies. A structured PubMed search using the terms "ROP neonate social cost" and "economic impact of ROP" was supplemented through the "Similar Articles" and "Cited Articles" functions. The review included cost-effectiveness analyses, cost-utility studies,

Spatio-temporal trends of the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum antimalarial drug resistance markers across sub-Saharan Africa from 2010 to 2024: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The emergence and subsequent spread of antimalarial drug resistance represent a significant threat to the efficacy of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) in sub-Saharan Africa. Multiple molecular markers have been implicated in resistance to artemisinin and its partner drugs. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published between 2010 and 2024 in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023432718). Studies were identified through PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and African Journal Online. Study s

Incidence of loss to follow‑up among East African adults on antiretroviral therapy: a systematic review and meta‑analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with human immunodeficiency virus receive antiretroviral treatment regardless of their clinical stage or CD4 count. While the "Universal Test and Treat" approach offers benefits, loss to follow-up remains a significant issue in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in East African countries, hindering treatment program goals. Due to inconsistent findings in previous studies, policymakers and healthcare providers struggle to implement effective interventions. This study aims to provide a pooled incidence of loss to follow-up among East African adults on antiretroviral therapy.

Health-related needs reported by adolescents living with HIV and receiving antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) have specific health needs that can be challenging to deliver. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is home to 84% of the global population of ALHIV, of whom about 59% receive ART. Several studies in SSA have demonstrated health service gaps due to lack of synchronized healthcare for ALHIV receiving ART. We conducted a systematic review of health-related needs among ALHIV on ART in SSA to inform decisions and policies on care. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane library and grey literatu

Neonatal, infant, and child mortality among women exposed to intimate partner violence in East Africa: a multi-country analysis.

BACKGROUND: Most neonatal, infant, and child deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where incidence of intimate partner violence (IPV) is highest in the world. Despite these facts, research regarding whether the two are associated is limited. The main objective was to examine associations between IPV amongst East African women and risk of death among their neonates, infants, and children, as well as related variables. METHODS: Analysis was conducted on data drawn from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) conducted by ICF Macro/MEASURE DHS in five East African countries:

Reduced prevalence of Giardia duodenalis in iron-deficient Rwandan children.

OBJECTIVE: Acute symptomatic infection with Giardia duodenalis impairs iron absorption, but iron deficiency may protect against infections caused by various micro-organisms including parasites. We therefore examined the association of G. duodenalis infection and iron deficiency in 575 Rwandan children under 5 years of age. METHODS: Giardia duodenalis infection was diagnosed by triplicate microscopy and PCR assays, and iron deficiency was defined as a ferritin concentration <12 ng/ml. RESULTS: Largely asymptomatic G. duodenalis infection was seen in 65.3% of the children and iron deficiency i

Prevalence and predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder and depression in HIV-infected and at-risk Rwandan women.

OBJECTIVE: During the 1994 Rwandan genocide, rape was used as a weapon of war to transmit HIV. This study measures trauma experiences of Rwandan women and identifies predictors associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depressive symptoms. METHODS: The Rwandan Women's Interassociation Study and Assessment (RWISA) is a prospective observational cohort study designed to assess effectiveness and toxicity of antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected Rwandan women. In 2005, a Rwandan-adapted Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (C

Association study of trauma load and SLC6A4 promoter polymorphism in posttraumatic stress disorder: evidence from survivors of the Rwandan genocide.

OBJECTIVE: As exposure to different types of traumatic stressors increases, the occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) increases. However, because some people exhibit either surprising resilience or high vulnerability, further influencing factors have been conjectured, such as gene-environment interactions. The SLC6A4 gene, which encodes serotonin transporter, has been identified as predisposing toward differential emotional processing between genotypes of its promoter polymorphism. METHOD: We investigated 408 refugees from the Rwandan genocide and assessed lifetime exposure to tr

Conservation and variation in the region of the Theileria parva p104 antigen coding gene used for PCR surveillance of the parasite.

The range of the protozoan parasite Theileria parva, which causes East Coast fever in cattle, has been expanding to countries where it has not previously been detected, as a result of cross-border domestic cattle movement. Countries where T. parva has not previously been observed until recently include Cameroon and South Sudan. This raises the issue of the conservation of the p104 antigen gene, on which the nested PCR assay that is widely used for T. parva surveillance in the blood of infected cattle is based. We sampled 40 isolates from six countries widely distributed across the geographical

Diarrheal epidemics among Rwandan refugees in 1994. Management and outcome in a field hospital.

We describe the clinical course and outcome of Rwandan refugees with cholera-like illness (n = 567) and clinical dysentery (n = 1,062) treated at the Israeli Army field hospital in the disaster region of Goma, Zaire, during the summer of 1994. Vigorous fluid administration was the primary therapy, complemented with antibiotics for patients with presumed Shigella infection. Recovery rates were 94% and 96% for patients with cholera and dysentery, respectively. Mortality was substantially affected by comorbid conditions such as pneumonia and meningitis, which occurred in one-quarter of these pati

Monitoring the implementation and scale-up of a life-saving intervention for preterm and small babies: Facility-based Kangaroo Mother Care.

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is an evidence-based intervention with large protective effects on neonatal mortality and morbidity, especially among small babies. Despite the available evidence, KMC adoption, implementation and scale-up has lagged. The purpose of this paper is to inform current and future KMC implementation by identifying achievements and challenges in countries that are in the process of scaling up KMC. METHODS: We collected and analyzed information to track the status of facility-based KMC in countries identified by the KMC Acceleration Partnership. We assessed the
