OBJECTIVE: Odontoma is a tumorlike malformation (hamartoma) that contains odontogenic epithelium with odontogenicectomesenchyme. Frequency and distribution of odontogenic tumor among a Portuguese population were analyzed and compared with previous reports.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: A total of 65 odontogenic tumor cases were collected from the files of the Department of Pathology of Hospital Sao Joao,Porto,Portugal, and the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP), from January 1993 to December 2006. Of these cases, 48 were retrieved and analyzed. The f

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to introduce a unified single-platform workflow for fabricating a patient-specific, multi-material 3D printing model of an impacted mesiodens. The workflow integrates CBCT and intraoral scans within a single planning platform and incorporates a fully detachable modular design and an elastic gingival layer to enable realistic soft-tissue simulation and stepwise surgical rehearsal. CASE PRESENTATION: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and intraoral scans were obtained for a patient with a fully impacted mesiodens. Using a single planning platform, anat

Supernumerary teeth develop in addition to the normal dentition and are a therapeutic challenge for pedodontists, orthodontists and oral surgeons alike. Therefore, interdisciplinary treatment concepts are needed for the benefit of the patient. In the present, two-parted literature review on supernumerary teeth, current classification, associated complications, diagnostic steps and different therapeutic approches are presented and discussed. Supernumerary teeth are diagnosed in the primary and permanent dentition. Supernumerary incisors, canines, premolars, and molars, as well as distomolars an

Tooth number is abnormal in about 20% of the human population. The most common defect is agenesis of the third molars, followed by loss of the lateral incisors and loss of the second premolars. Tooth loss appears as both a feature of multi-organ syndromes and as a non-syndromic isolated character. Apart from tooth number, abnormalities are also observed in tooth size, shape, and structure. Many of the genes that underlie dental defects have been identified, and several mouse models have been created to allow functional studies to understand, in greater detail, the role of particular genes in t

Eruption anomalies of the maxillary permanent cuspid on the cleft side was analyzed in a sample of 77 children with mono- and bi-lateral cleft lip/palate. The main findings were: 1) The permanent cuspid showed an initial mesial position in relation to the root of its primary predecessor in a relatively high number of cases. Nearly all those cuspids that showed an anomalous position (mesial or distal) in relation to the corresponding primary teeth at the time of the first observation erupted in malposition (palatally in the cleft area, mesially or distally to the primary cuspids). 2) In most ca

BACKGROUND: Dental agenesis, supernumerary teeth and odontoma collectively exert a significant impact on the aesthetics and function of patients. Studies have shown that early detection and intervention may alleviate complications.
METHODS: Panoramic radiographs and medical records of 5,015 patients aged 5.5-13.9 years who underwent paediatric dentistry at the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Fujian Medical University between 2013 and 2022 were retrospectively reviewed for dental agenesis, supernumerary teeth and odontoma. All data were analysed using SPSS 26.0.
RESULTS: The total preva

Supernumerary teeth are advantaged sources for high-quality stem cell preparation from both apical papilla (SCAP-Ss) and dental pulp (DPSCs). However, the deficiency of the systematic and detailed comparison of the biological and transcriptomic characteristics of the aforementioned stem cells largely hinders their application in regenerative medicine. Herein, we collected supernumerary teeth for SCAP-S and DPSC isolation and identification by utilizing multiple biological tests (e.g., growth curve, cell cycle and apoptosis, adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation, and quantitative real-time

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at carrying out a radiographic analysis on the prevalence of dental anomalies of number (agenesis and supernumerary teeth) in permanent dentition, in different subphenotypes of isolated cleft palate preadolescent patients.
METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of 300 patients aged between 9 and 12 years, with cleft palate and enrolled in a single treatment center, were retrospectively analyzed. The sample was divided into two groups according to the extension/severity of the cleft palate: complete and incomplete. The chi-square test was used for intergroup comparison rega

A patient having adequate records and diagnosed as having Binder syndrome is presented. Nasomaxillary hypoplasia requires a definitive treatment, use of bone grafts, upper maxillary osteotomies, and advancement or a combination of both. Bone grafts can be reabsorbed, and complete maxillary advance modifies normal occlusion in a certain way, because the posterior sector is not compromised. The aim of this case treatment is to create a new osseous surface that makes the eruption of the permanent dental pieces easier and gives the correct skeletal position to the upper maxilla with distraction os

A new ectodermal dysplasia syndrome was reported by Bork et al. in 1987 (Hautarzt 38:342-347). The syndrome consisted of hypotrichosis with the typical SEM (scanning electron microscopy) changes of uncombable hair, retinal pigmentary dystrophy, juvenile cataract, oligodontia, brachydactyly with brachymetacarpia; it was inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. We describe a sporadic case and add further clinical findings to expand the spectrum of this rare syndrome.

Two cases of simple bone cyst are presented. The first is unusual because of its radiologic appearance simulating ameloblastoma and its prolonged healing time, requiring surgical intervention on several occasions. The second is presented because of the occurrence of bilateral cysts, of which there are only eight other reported cases. It is postulated that the first case might represent a single large simple bone cyst that had several chambers with tenuous connections or that it might be an example of multiple simple bone cysts in close proximity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The ebb and flow of genetic influence relative to the understanding of craniofacial and dental disorders has evolved into a tacit acceptance of the current genetic paradigm. This review explores the science behind craniofacial and dental disorders through the lens of recent past and current findings and using tooth agenesis as a model of advances in craniofacial genetics.
RECENT FINDINGS: Contemporary studies of craniofacial biology takes advantage of the technological resources stemming from the genomic and post-genomic eras. Emerging data highlights the role of key genes

BACKGROUND: Non-syndromic multiple supernumerary teeth (NSMST) is a condition with a very low prevalence and which is opportunely described in the literature by case reports or group of cases. This represents a problem when it comes to describing and discussing the characteristics of this disorder.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Knowledge, Science Direct, and Scopus databases to locate and identify cases and series of cases about articles on multiple supernumerary teeth not associated with syndromes that have been reported so far. The following data were recor
