Staphylococcus chromogenes as a cause of sequential mastitis episodes in a camel (Camelus dromedarius).

Staphylococcus chromogenes is a coagulase-negative Staphylococci, reported to cause mastitis in cows and other dairy animals. This report describes sequential mastitis episodes caused by S. chromogenes in a single-hump camel from Rajasthan, India. One six-year-old Mewari she camel in second lactation showed two episodes of mastitis. S. chromogenes was isolated during both episodes from affected udder quarters. The isolate from second episode was later evaluated which was catalase-positive, coagulase-negative, non-hemolytic, and positive for arginine dihydrolase 1, had ability of L-lactate alka

Effects of Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf on Helicobacter pylori induced gastritis in rats: anti- Helicobacter pylori and anti gastritis properties.

We evaluated the antimicrobial and host-directed effects of Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf (P. furfuracea) against Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) associated gastritis. The acetone extract inhibited H. pylori growth in vitro, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 15.625 µg/mL, and modestly reduced pre-formed biofilms. In a rat model of indomethacin- and H. pylori induced gastritis, oral P. furfuracea treatment lowered gastric bacterial load and urease activity, shifted the cytokine profile toward an anti-inflammatory pattern (reduced interleukin-1β [IL-1β] and restored interleuki

A Hybrid Photo/Biocatalytic System for the Sustainable Synthesis of L-Alanine From Urea and Pyruvate.

Developing sustainable routes to biodegradable polymers from renewable feedstocks is key to reducing reliance on petroleum and mitigating environmental pollution. Amino acids, such as L-alanine, are valuable monomers for biodegradable nylons. Artificial photosynthesis has recently been applied to amino acid synthesis, yet the use of biomass-derived nitrogen sources such as urea in visible-light driven L-alanine synthesis has not yet been explored. Here, we present a novel artificial photosynthetic system that converts urea and pyruvate, both biomass-derived compounds, into L-alanine under visi

Antifungal repurposing of clinical chelator DMSA against Cryptococcus neoformans via laccase and histidine biosynthesis inhibition.

As a globally distributed opportunistic fungus, Cryptococcus neoformans poses a significant threat to human health by causing fatal meningitis, which is associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. Current antifungals-polyenes, flucytosine, and azoles-are limited by toxicity and resistance, underscoring the need for new agents. This study evaluated dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), a chelating agent used in the treatment of heavy metal poisoning, beginning with its effect on the virulence factor laccase. DMSA showed broad-spectrum activity against standard (H99, B3501) and clinical isolat

Characterization of periodic inoculation with Talaromyces affecting the bioavailability of rhizosphere lead in soil-Houttuynia cordata.

Periodic inoculation of the phosphate solubilizing fungus Talaromyces enhanced soil lead (Pb) immobilization and the growth of Houttuynia cordata. Four treatments were established: a control treatment, a single inoculation treatment, a treatment inoculated every 10 days, and a treatment inoculated every 20 days. The results demonstrated that, Talaromyces inoculation decreased soil pH and increased available phosphorus (AP) content by 15.4-24.4 mg/kg via the solubilization of insoluble-P, with periodic inoculation further enhancing phosphorus release. Additionally, periodic inoculation further

High-yield production and functional analysis of novel rhizobial-type glutaminase-free L-asparaginase from Paenibacillus thiaminolyticus.

L-Asparaginases are enzymes known for decades due to their use in medicine for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Recently, they have also found application in the food industry, and other possibilities are emerging in the treatment of infectious diseases or in the design of biosensors. For this reason, an ongoing effort has been made to find and characterize new enzymes with properties suitable for these specific applications. In this work, L-asparaginase from Paenibacillus thiaminolyticus (isoenzyme 1) belonging to the least explored group of L-asparaginases derived from L-aspara

Riboflavin inhibits growth and reduces virulence of Cryptococcus neoformans in vitro by membrane disruption and excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species and exhibits efficacy against pulmonary cryptococcosis and meningitis.

The incidences of pulmonary cryptococcosis and meningitis cause significant morbidity and mortality. Effective and affordable drugs for treatment of cryptococcal meningitis are urgently needed. Drug reuse is an effective strategy for the development of new antifungals against Cryptococcus neoformans infection. In this study, riboflavin (RF) significantly inhibited growth of C. neoformans as determined by the broth microdilution and spot dilution methods. Moreover, RF significantly inhibited biofilm formation and reduced virulence (capsule, melanin, and urease). In addition, RF caused cell memb

Role of TNF-α-Inducing Protein Secreted by Helicobacter pylori as a Tumor Promoter in Gastric Cancer and Emerging Preventive Strategies.

The tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-inducing protein (tipα) gene family, comprising Helicobacter pylori membrane protein 1 (hp-mp1) and tipα, has been identified as a tumor promoter, contributing to H. pylori carcinogenicity. Tipα is a unique H. pylori protein with no similarity to other pathogenicity factors, CagA, VacA, and urease. American H. pylori strains cause human gastric cancer, whereas African strains cause gastritis. The presence of Tipα in American and Euro-Asian strains suggests its involvement in human gastric cancer development. Tipα secreted from H. pylori stimulates gastric ca

Cu and Zn exert a greater influence on antibiotic resistance and its transfer than doxycycline in agricultural soils.

Livestock manure is a main source of heavy metals, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural soils. The co-existence of heavy metals and ARGs needs to be systematically studied, since manure application is greatly encouraged. In this study, we examined soils for alterations in antibiotic resistance where doxycycline, Cu, and Zn were added equivalent to those found in typical pig manure applications. The results indicated that high levels of Cu inhibited soil respiration and urease for the first 10 days. Metagenomic analysis demonstrated that Cu and Zn additions caused

Ureaplasma species and preterm birth: current perspectives.

Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the human Ureaplasma species are most frequently isolated from the amniotic fluid and placenta in these cases. Ureaplasma colonisation is associated with infertility, stillbirth, histologic chorioamnionitis, and neonatal morbidities, including congenital pneumonia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, meningitis and perinatal death. The human Ureaplasma spp. are separated into Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum with 14 known serotypes. The small genome has several genes, which code for surface proteins; most

Urogenital schistosomiasis is associated with signatures of microbiome dysbiosis in Nigerian adolescents.

Urogenital schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the parasite Schistosoma haematobium, which resides in the vasculature surrounding the urogenital system. Previous work has suggested that helminthic infections can affect the intestinal microbiome, and we hypothesized that S. haematobium infection could result in an alteration of immune system-microbiota homeostasis and impact the composition of the gut microbiota. To address this question, we compared the fecal microbiomes of infected and uninfected schoolchildren from the Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Niger

Pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori is estimated to infect more than half of the worlds human population and represents a major risk factor for chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, MALT lymphoma, and gastric adenocarcinoma. H. pylori infection and clinical consequences are controlled by highly complex interactions between the host, colonizing bacteria, and environmental parameters. Important bacterial determinants linked with gastric disease development include the cag pathogenicity island encoding a type IV secretion system (T4SS), the translocated effector protein CagA, vacuolating cytotoxin VacA, adhes
