OBJECTIVE: To compare the visual outcomes and adverse events of contact lens with primary intraocular lens (IOL) correction of monocular aphakia during infancy.
METHODS: In a randomized, multicenter (12 sites) clinical trial, 114 infants with a unilateral congenital cataract were assigned to undergo cataract surgery between 1 to 6 months of age either with or without primary IOL implantation. Contact lenses were used to correct aphakia in patients who did not receive IOLs. Grating visual acuity was tested at 1 year of age by a masked traveling examiner.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Grating visual a

PURPOSE: To report a pupil-supported, iris-clip intraocular lens (IOL) that was explanted more than 28 years after implantation.
METHODS: A pupil-supported, iris-clip, Sputnik-like IOL was implanted in the left eye of a 33-year-old man to correct aphakia after extracapsular cataract extraction due to trauma.
RESULTS: Twenty-eight years after implantation, the patient was referred to our center with loss of vision. Clinical examination showed dislocation of the IOL, which was subsequently explanted. Scanning electron microscopic examination showed a transparent, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA),

PURPOSE: To present results of experience with the authors" technique for intrascleral fixation of intraocular lenses for the correction of aphakia in the absence of capsular support.
METHODS: Eleven patients (four children and seven adults) underwent surgery with the use of the method proposed by the authors (11 operations). The patients ranged in age from 11 to 75 years. The equatorial remnants in the lower segment of the capsular bag were revealed in 5 patients (45.5%). Absence of the capsular bag was observed in 6 patients (54.5%).
RESULTS: During long-term follow-up evaluation, visual a

PURPOSE: To report longer term results of transscleral sutured intraocular lens (TSSIOL) implantation in a sizable cohort of aphakic children, who were not suitable for contact lens wear and lacked adequate capsular support for sulcus fixation of an intraocular lens.
METHODS: Clinical outcome data were collated by retrospective review after surgery on 43 consecutive eyes in 32 aphakic children (mean age at implantation = 10 years; 33% < or = age 7 years). Outcome measures included visual acuity, postoperative refractive error, postoperative complications, and rate of reoperation. Follow-up av

BACKGROUND: Optical rehabilitation of unilateral aphakia in eyes with no capsular support is problematic in pediatric patients who cannot tolerate contact lenses. Possible options include a unilateral aphakic spectacle, an anterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL), or a scleral fixated posterior chamber IOL. Of these choices the posterior chamber IOL is the most physiologic. Experience in adults shows increased complications with this technique.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to report the short-term results and complications of unilateral scleral fixated posterior chamber IOLs in t

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of scleral-fixated intraocular lens (IOL) tilt on visual outcomes.
METHODS: Ninety-four eyes of consecutive 94 patients who underwent scleral-fixated IOL implantation with Z-suture technique were included in this prospective study. The values of pre- and postoperative 12th month uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), cylindrical refractive error, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and corneal and lenticular astigmatism were recorded. The position of the implanted IOL was evaluated with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). The relationships bet

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To include intraoperative measurements of the anterior lens capsule of the aphakic eye into the intraocular lens power calculation (IPC) process and to compare the refractive outcome with conventional IPC formulae.
METHODS: In this prospective study, a prototype operating microscope with an integrated continuous optical coherence tomography (OCT) device (Visante attached to OPMI VISU 200, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany) was used to measure the anterior lens capsule position after implanting a capsular tension ring (CTR). PURPOSE: To report the intraoperative performance and postoperative outcomes in eyes with anterior persistent fetal vasculature (PFV).
SETTING: Iladevi Cataract & IOL Research Centre, India, and Filatov Institute Odessa, Ukraine.
DESIGN: Prospective interventional case series.
METHODS: Eyes with anterior PFV had surgery using a standardized surgical technique. Plaque peeling was used for small plaques and partial excision for larger plaques. In eyes in which the entire lens converted into a fibrovascular tissue, extensive capsulectomy with anterior 2-port limbal vitrectomy was performed. Mi

PURPOSE: The outcomes of cataract surgery have been well reported in rural China; however, the situation in the urban population remains unclear. This study assessed the outcomes of cataract surgery in urban southern China.
METHODS: Data were gathered from the Liwan Eye Study, a population-based, cross-sectional study conducted in people aged 50 years or more in the Liwan District of Guangzhou. Presenting and best corrected visual acuity and a detailed eye examination were performed. For all aphakic and pseudophakic participants identified, information on the date, setting, type, and complica

BACKGROUND: Canaloplasty provides a new option in non-penetrating glaucoma surgery. The aim of this study is to examine its early postsurgical safety and efficacy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of canaloplasties performed at our institution in 2009 (n=46, 13 of which were combined with cataract surgery). The mean follow-up was 6.0±3.4 months. The most important parameters examined were intraocular pressure (IOP), number of topical medications, postoperative complications, and required additional surgery.
RESULTS: Mean presurgical IOP: 18.2±5.8 mmHg on a mean of 2.3±1.2

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation on binocular vision in patients with unilateral aphakia uncorrected consecutively for 3 years or more.
METHODS: This study included nine patients who underwent secondary IOL implantation, but had remained in a unilateral aphakic state, without being corrected, for at least 3 consecutive years at the time of the secondary IOL implant. They also had a postoperative best-corrected visual acuity of better than 20/40 in both eyes. All patients underwent an ophthalmologic examination including best spectacle-correct

BACKGROUND: Extracapsular cataract (ECCE) surgery is becoming increasingly popular in surgical eye camps of developing countries. This study assesses the outcome of 166 eyes at 6 weeks and 14 and 32 months after ECCE with and without implantation of intraocular lens in refugee camps of eastern Nepal.
METHOD: All patients operated on in seven refugee camps during the 3 years before the assessment were included in the study population. Visual acuity, examination of anterior segment and posterior segments, and grading of capsular opacification using a standardised grading system were performed.

PURPOSE: This report is a summary of the data of the IOLAB, Inc pediatric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation investigation. The goal of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of IOL implantation for the treatment of pediatric aphakia, pending approval by the Food and Drug Administration.
METHODS: From May 1981 to July 1994, a total of 1260 pediatric eyes received 171 styles of IOLs implanted by 361 US investigators. Preoperative, operative, and postoperative status reports over the first year were required for each eye entered into the study. Annual visit reports were requested t

A socio-epidemiological assessment of what happens to the visual outcome after camp-based intracapsular cataract extraction was conducted in 6 villages and periurban areas in North India. 120 patients (143 eyes) were included in the study. The mean age at cataract extraction was 64.39 (range 33-83 years). 44.7% of the operated eyes obtained a good vision ( > or = 6/18) while 39.9% had low vision (6/24-3/60). The duration since the cataract extraction was seen to influence visual outcome. 70% of the respondents were satisfied with the surgical outcome. 76% of those with unilateral aphakia and 8
