BACKGROUND: Poultry production plays a vital role in ensuring food security and nutritional sustainability in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, the emergence and spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in poultry farms present a growing public health concern in the region. To address this gap, this study investigated the prevalence and genetic basis of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Gram-negative bacteria in cecal contents of chickens collected from two major poultry farms in Al Ain, UAE.
METHODS: A total of 77 samples were collected over an eleven-month period, yiel

Staphylococcus aureus is a major zoonotic bacterial pathogen that causes a broad spectrum of human and animal diseases, including skin infections, sepsis, endocarditis, and bovine mastitis. In the geographically isolated setting of New Zealand, the population structure of S. aureus exhibits a distinct genomic profile. Globally, bovine S. aureus isolates are primarily associated with sequence types (STs), ST97 and ST151, whereas in New Zealand, ST1 predominates, accounting for approximately 70% of bovine isolates. ST1 is also a clinically significant sequence type in humans. This study employed

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) Escherichia coli in poultry farming is a growing global public health concern, particularly in Bangladesh, where the use of antibiotics remains largely unregulated. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and AMR patterns of E. coli isolated from broiler chickens in Sylhet district of Bangladesh and to investigate the network of coexisting resistance traits among the isolates. A total of 130 samples (44 cloacal, 46 faecal, 21 liver and 19 intestinal) were collected from live and dead broiler chickens in the Sylhet district of Bangladesh from

In the absence of effective drugs, vaccines constitute the cornerstone for the prevention of Newcastle disease (ND). Different strategies have been implemented to increase vaccination, but uptake remains low, underscoring the need for novel vaccine delivery methods. We designed and assessed the effectiveness of a community-centered ND vaccine delivery model in southeastern Kenya. Under the model, we sensitized smallholder chicken farmers (SCFs) through structured training on chicken husbandry, biosecurity, ND, and its vaccination, among other aspects. We subsequently engaged trained community

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is an extremely contagious and deadly virus that affects numerous bird species, posing serious threats to poultry production on a global scale. In addition to implementing biosecurity practices in farming systems, vaccination remains the most effective means of controlling Newcastle disease (ND). However, while existing commercial vaccines provide some level of protection, the effectiveness of these vaccines can be questionable, particularly in field settings where the complexity of vaccination program implementation poses significant challenges, especially agains

The widespread misuse of antibiotics to combat bacterial infections in dairy farming is a global concern contributing to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). To gain insights within small-scale dairy farming, a study was conducted in Nyabihu district of Rwanda from September 2021 to April 2023 to assess practices and factors associated with antibiotic use, investigate antibiotic residues in cow milk and undertake a comprehensive training program to improve quality milk production. A mixed-methods approach, combining cross-sectional and longitudinal intervention studies, involved 42 regular dairy fa

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Raising backyard chickens is a common practice in Morocco, mainly in rural or periurban areas. Constraints due to devastating avian diseases have been recognized as a major limiting factor in backyard poultry production. Consequently, these flocks could potentially be implicated as reservoirs for poultry diseases. However, there is a considerable lack of information on disease prevalence in this production system, and the risk represented by these small flocks remains under debate. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence and identify related risk factors of a range

Maternal factors predetermine offspring development and health, including the establishment of offsprings' first microbiomes. Research in swine has shown that early microbial exposures impact microbiome colonization in piglets, but this phenomenon has never been tested in the context of delivery room disinfection. Thus, we exposed gestating sows to two delivery environments (n = 3/environment): stalls cleaned with a broad-spectrum disinfectant (disinfected environment [D]) or stalls cleaned only with hot-water power washing (nondisinfected environment [Nde]), 3 days prior to farrowing. Microbi

Campylobacter spp. are among the leading foodborne pathogens, causing campylobacteriosis, a zoonotic infection that results in bacterial gastroenteritis and diarrheal disease in animals and humans. This study investigated the molecular epidemiology of antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter spp. isolated across the farm-to-fork-continuum in an intensive pig production system in South Africa. Following ethical approval, samples were collected over sixteen weeks from selected critical points (farm, transport, abattoir, and retail) using a farm-to-fork sampling approach according to WHO-AGISAR guideli

While beneficial for sow reproductive efficiency and biosecurity, segregated early weaning (SEW) leads to a systemic immune response that adversely affects the digestive physiology and post-weaning growth of pigs. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of a glucocorticoid receptor agonist (GA) on growth performance, measures of immune function and intestinal integrity of SEW pigs. In both experiments, pigs were fed corn-soybean meal-based starter diets. In the first experiment, 48 pigs (initial BW 4.8 ± 0.7 kg) were weaned at 21 ± 1 days and randomly assigned to three GA treatm

Little is known about Salmonella serovars circulating in backyard poultry and swine populations worldwide. Backyard production systems (BPS) that raise swine and/or poultry are distributed across Chile, but are more heavily concentrated in central Chile, where industrialized systems are in close contact with BPS. This study aims to detect and identify circulating Salmonella serovars in poultry and swine raised in BPS. Bacteriological Salmonella isolation was carried out for 1744 samples collected from 329 BPS in central Chile. Faecal samples were taken from swine, poultry, geese, ducks, turkey

UNLABELLED: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an important One Health issue affecting the three human, animal, and environmental sectors. The occurrence of Escherichia coli resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESC-R) is considered a relevant marker for the estimation of the AMR burden. In the dairy industry, veal calves present the highest proportions of ESC-R compared to adults. Since little is known in France about the AMR dynamics from birth to the fattening farm, our observational study determined the proportion of ESC-R E. coli using selective media, and characterized by whole-g

African swine fever (ASF) is a hemorrhagic disease of domestic pigs and wild boars. The ASF virus (ASFV), a sole member of the family Asfarviridae and genus Asfivirus, causes this devastating disease. In sub-Saharan Africa, ASFV is maintained through three interlinked cycles: the domestic cycle, the pig-tick cycle, and the sylvatic cycle, which collectively sustain its endemic presence in the region. Interaction between wild and domestic pigs at livestock-wildlife interfaces, particularly in protected areas, poses a significant threat to smallholder farmers. This study aimed to investigate the

INTRODUCTION: Brucella spp. infections in livestock continue to pose significant threats to public and animal health, as well as to local economies. In the European Union, Brucella abortus, which primarily affects cattle and buffaloes, has been successfully eradicated in some Member States and across northern and central Italy through mandatory eradication and control programmes. However, some provinces in southern Italy, including Caserta and Salerno (Campania Region), remain affected, while in other provinces, as in Isernia (Molise Region), brucellosis has temporarily re-emerged.

Campylobacter infections in humans and chickens are a significant burden to health services and the poultry industry. In the UK, over 75% of chicken products are Campylobacter-positive at retail, but the knowledge of the mechanisms responsible for extraintestinal spread into edible tissues remains incomplete. This work aimed to establish if two chicken-associated lineages of Campylobacter jejuni, ST353 and ST464, have the potential for extraintestinal spread. Large- and small-scale chicken colonization trials investigated the infection biology of C. jejuni ST353 (three strains) and ST464 (four

UNLABELLED: The primary pathogen causing animal tuberculosis (TB), Mycobacterium bovis, can infect a wide range of mammals, including humans. This pathogen is considered endemic in the Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa, where it threatens the health and conservation of African wildlife, including endangered species. This mycobacterial pathogen is spread through close contact with an infected host by aerosols or ingestion but may also be transmitted indirectly through the environment. Detecting environmental M. bovis is challenging due to the complexity of the sample matrix and may requi

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is a highly infectious and transmissible gammacoronavirus that is nearly impossible to control through biosecurity. Coronaviruses are RNA viruses with an enormous capacity for rapid replication and high rates of mutation, leading to a tremendous amount of genetic diversity. Viral evolution occurs when selection working on genetic diversity leads to new mutations being fixed in the population over time. For IBV, the emergence of variant viruses is likely due to a combination of selection acting on existing genetic diversity, as well as on newly created mutation

Cattle lameness is a concern to the United Kingdom (UK) cattle industry, negatively impacting upon welfare and production. Previous work involving one small study (n = 21) has identified that some UK beef farmers underestimate lameness prevalence, but also that farmers vary in their perception of the impact of lameness. Knowledge and skills of farmers were identified as a potential concern, and farmer-reported barriers were identified. However, the extent to which these views can be extrapolated is unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to produce descriptive results of UK beef farmer l

The sheep body louse (Bovicola ovis) is a parasite of major economic concern in Australia. This article reports lice incidence and control practices on Australian sheep farms as determined by three cross-sectional surveys of the years 2003, 2011 and 2018. The incidence of live lice detected within a flock was similar across the survey years with a slight decline in 2018 (2003: 20%, 2011: 18.6% and 2018: 13.9%). In an average year, most farmers did not see any direct or indirect evidence of lice infestation (2011: 59.3% and 2018: 69.5%), however, over a five-year period 38.9% (2003), 66.3% (in

Pigs are one of several host species for Toxoplasma gondii parasites, and consumption of infected pork may lead to toxoplasmosis in humans. We estimated seroprevalence in sows and finishers from conventional and organic herds in Denmark and discussed the strategies for reducing the risk from pork. We collected 447 blood samples from 59 herds, and additional meat-juice samples from 212 of the same pigs. Using a T. gondii IgG commercial ELISA test, we found 2% (95% CI = 0.4%-5%) apparent seroprevalence of T. gondii in conventional finishers, 11% (95% CI = 6%-17%) in organic finishers, 19% (95% C
