Sensory retraining following orthognathic surgery: effect on threshold measures of sensory function.

The purpose of this analysis was to examine the effect of sensory retraining on sensory function after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO). A total of 186 subjects were enrolled in a multi-centre double-blind two parallel group stratified block randomized clinical trial. Subjects were randomized to group immediately after surgery. Threshold measures for contact detection, two-point discrimination and two-point perception were obtained on the chin before and 1, 3 and 6 months and 1 and 2 years after surgery. The ratio of each threshold measure (post-surgery value/pre-surgery value) was ca

Surgical treatment of craniomaxillofacial fibrous dysplasia: functionally or aesthetically?

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a tumor-like growth that consists of replacement of the medullary bone with fibrous tissue, causing the expansion and weakening of the areas of bone involved. The most commonly affected bones are facial bones, causing a number of facial cosmetic and functional problems. METHODS: From December 2008 to July 2012, 10 patients with craniomaxillofacial fibrous dysplasia were treated by conservative resection and local recontouring. The patients were followed up yearly, with an average of 3 years; the longest follow-up period was 5 years. RESULTS: All the 10 p

Piezoelectric internal sinus elevation (PISE) technique: a new method for internal sinus elevation.

This article reports the surgical procedure of a transalveolar approach for sinus floor elevation using piezoelectric surgery without a mallet, called piezoelectric internal sinus elevation (PISE) technique. PISE is the modified technique of the osteotome-mediated sinus floor elevation. Osteotome-mediated sinus floor elevation uses a mallet to break the sinus floor and to push sinus membrane up. Using this technique might possibly bring positional vertigo to the patient. PISE technique does not use a mallet during the procedure to break the sinus floor and to elevate the sinus membrane; theref

Correction of malocclusion by anterolateral osteotomy in a traumatized maxilla.

Injuries to the face may cause long-term defects both aesthetic and functional consequences when the treatment is delayed, inadequate or absent. The varieties of osteotomy techniques are applied to improve posttraumatic malposition of the maxillofacial bones and occlusal function. In this article, a 21-year-old female involved in a traffic accident presented a severe deformity in maxilla and treated by anterolateral osteotomy is presented.

[Crestal core elevation technique--case series and literature review].

Sinus floor augmentation is the most common surgical procedure for gaining bone volume in the posterior maxilla. The purpose of this procedure is to enable implant placement un edentulous ridges. The most common techniques for sinus augmentation are: 1. Bone added osteotome sinus floor elevation (BAOSFE). 2. Crestal core elevation (CCE). 3. Lateral window technique (LWT). Since the early 80's many articles describing the successful use of different augmentation materials for sinus elevation have been published. Although many articles have been published on the lateral window technique and the

Maxillary sinus floor elevation using the osteotome technique in the presence of antral pseudocysts: a retrospective study with an average follow-up of 27 months.

PURPOSE: This retrospective study investigated the predictability of the osteotome technique for sinus floor elevation in the presence of antral pseudocysts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out in patients treated with the osteotome technique for sinus floor elevation in the presence of antral pseudocysts and simultaneous implant placement between 2005 and 2009. Pseudocyst cases were collected from the patient population during that period based on faint dome-shaped radiographic findings in the elevated sinus floor. Data were recorded and evaluated in terms of bone ga

Complications associated with implant migration into the maxillary sinus cavity.

BACKGROUND: Migration of dental implants into the maxillary sinus is an uncommon, but increasingly reported complication. Implant migration may result from initial lack of primary stability, intrasinusal and nasal pressure changes, autoimmune reaction to the implant or incorrect distribution of occlusal forces. This retrospective study aims at analyzing the factors that may influence implant migration into the maxillary sinus cavity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen patients presenting a total 15 implants that migrated into the maxillary sinus were recruited. Diagnosis of this complication was

Repair of large sinus membrane perforations using stabilized collagen barrier membranes: surgical techniques with histologic and radiographic evidence of success.

The most frequent intraoperative complication with sinus elevation is perforation of the schneiderian membrane. In most instances, the repair of this perforation is necessary to contain particulate grafting material and complete the procedure. New techniques are presented here for the management of large perforations of the schneiderian membrane. A bioabsorbable collagen membrane is stabilized outside the antrostomy and then folded inward to create either a new superior wall that can obliterate a large perforation or a "pouch" that can completely contain the particulate material. This can make

Sinus elevation using a staged osteotome technique for site development prior to implant placement in sites with less than 5 mm of native bone: a case report.

Since the osteotome technique with simultaneous implant placement becomes less predictable when there is less than 5 mm of preexisting alveolar bone height beneath the sinus, a staged approach has been recommended for this situation. The purpose of the present article is to describe the osteotome technique as a site development method where the edentulous posterior maxilla radiographically showed less than 5 mm of bone between the alveolar crest and the sinus floor.

Distraction osteogenesis: role and clinical applications in the maxillofacial region.

Distraction osteogenesis or callostasis is a technique of new bone formation by gradual separation of bony fragments. The method was first developed for limb lengthening but recently this process was widely applied to the cranio-maxillofacial bones. The application included unlimited bone lengthening and reconstruction of segmental defects. Several designs of extra-oral and intra-oral distraction devices were invented to suit different areas of craniofacial bone. Nevertheless intraoral distractors have several advantages including minimal scarring and being less cumbersome. Clinical cases usin

Impact of Titanium Plate Fixation on Diacylglycerol and Growth Factor Levels in the Periosteum of the Mandible and Maxilla in Patients with Dentofacial Deformities After Jaw Osteotomies.

Titanium is widely recognized for its biocompatibility and utility in maxillofacial and orthopedic surgery; however, its influence on bone remodeling biomarkers remains underexplored. This study investigates the effects of uncoated titanium plates on both the growth factors and diacylglycerols (DAGs) in the periostea of the maxilla and mandible, as DAG signaling is an essential secondary messenger molecule involved in intracellular signaling connected to various growth factors. The study group comprised 20 patients undergoing bimaxillary osteotomies using miniplates and screws made of Ti6Al4V

Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Has Asymmetry of Bony Orbits: A Retrospective Study.

Facial asymmetry is common in unilateral clefts. Since virtual surgical planning (VSP) is becoming more common and automated segmentation is utilized more often, the position and asymmetry of the orbits can affect the design outcome. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether non-syndromic unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients requiring orthognathic surgery have asymmetry of the bony orbits. Retrospectively, we analyzed the preoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) or computed tomography (CT) data of UCLP (n = 15) patients scheduled for a Le Fort 1 (n = 10) or bimaxillary o
