Endoscopic characteristics of infection-associated peptic ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Aside from Helicobacter pylori, another cause for the development or worsening of gastrointestinal ulcers is scrub typhus, an acute febrile disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. We aimed to compare the endoscopic characteristics of peptic ulcers caused by these infectious agents. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study involved patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at Chosun University Hospital in Korea. We compared endoscopic features and demographic characteristics between patients with H. pylori infection and those with O. tsutsugamushi infection.

CagA-positive H. pylori may protect against disease of the hands, feet, and mouth.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of an infection with Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori rises with age, mostly affecting children. The infection rate of Helicobacter pylori increases with age, primarily affecting children. The rate of cases of disease of the hands, feet, and mouth (HFMD), an infectious illness that mostly affects newborns and young children and is ubiquitous throughout the Asia-Pacific area, declines with age. Asthma, shigellosis, TB, anaphylactic disease, and other diarrheal illnesses are all prevented by H. pylori. It also has a strong correlation with infectious disorders brought o

Scrub typhus in patients with acute febrile illness: a 5-year study from India.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus was once thought to be a disease of rural origin and was confined to specific pockets in South Asia. Early diagnosis and treatment is extremely important as it is associated with high mortality if left untreated. AIM: To delineate the clinical and molecular epidemiology of scrub typhus in patients presenting with acute febrile illness from various parts of India. METHODS: During the study period of 5 years (October 2013 to October 2018), a total of 1742 patients with acute febrile illness <15 days were enrolled after taking informed consent. Patients were diagnosed u

Epidemiological and clinical features of three clustered cases co-infected with Lyme disease and rickettsioses.

Lyme disease and rickettsioses are two common diseases in China. However, the concomitant occurrence of both diseases in a single individual has been reported infrequently in literature. We reported three related female patients admitted at Beijing Ditan Hospital from October to December 2010. They had similar epidemiological histories. At the beginning, they only got a single diagnosis, respectively, but after specific screenings, the final diagnoses were made. Because arthropods can harbour more than one disease-causing agent, patients can be infected with more than one pathogen at the same

Host defenses in experimental scrub typhus: mapping the gene that controls natural resistance in mice.

Natural resistance of mice to lethal ifections of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, strain Gilliam, is controlled by a single, autosomal, dominant gene, which we have designated Ric, with r and s representing the resistant nd susceptible alleles, respectively. Using three sets of recombinant inbred mouse strains (BXD, BXH, and BXJ), the Ric locus was mapped to Chromosome 5 closely linked to the retinal degeneration (rd) locus. This linkage was confirmed by a backcross analysis. Based on the RI strains and the C57BL/6Ty-le congenic strain (the only proven Ric-rd cross-over), we estimate the recombinati

Experimental scrub typhus immunogens: gamma-irradiated and formalinized rickettsiae.

Scrub typhus immunogens were prepared by exposing infected yolk sac suspensions of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi to various doses of gamma radiation. Mouse lethality was abolished at doses greater than 200 krads, whereas immunogenicity of the suspensions, as shown by mouse protection tests, was diminished relatively little by radiation doses in the 200- to 400-krad range. Using a 300-krad gamma dose to provide a safety factor, immunogens were prepared and their protective capacity was contrasted with formalinized scrub typhus immunogens prepared by conventional techniques. Formalinized suspensions

Antibody response following scrub typhus infection: clinical cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Scrub typhus is a common cause of fever in Asia. The antibody response to infection and its effect on subsequent infection are unclear. We studied the IgM and IgG antibody response after infection, accounting for clinical severity. METHOD: We studied 197 scrub typhus patients for up to 2 years post-infection. Overall, 501 blood samples were analysed for scrub typhus antibodies using ELISA. IgM and IgG ELISA optical densities (OD) were analysed using quantile regression. OD values of 1.0 (IgM) and 1.5 (IgG) were used to define seropositivity. RESULTS: IgM OD values fell rapidly fro

Prevalence of scrub typhus in pyrexia of unknown origin and assessment of interleukin-8, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interferon-gamma levels in scrub typhus-positive patients.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus is lesser known cause of fever of unknown origin in India. Even if there have been reports documenting the prevalence of scrub typhus in different parts of India, it is still an unknown entity, and clinicians usually do not consider it as differential diagnosis. The present study was performed to document the prevalence of scrub typhus among febrile patients in western part of Uttar Pradesh and to assess the clinical profile of infected patients on the one hand and knowledge, attitude, and practices among clinicians on the other. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 357

Seasonal and spatial trends of rickettsioses in Sri Lanka (2009-2023): Spatio-temporal analysis and climate-linked modeling.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsioses are caused by obligate intracellular bacteria of the order Rickettsiales, which includes several genera such as Rickettsia, Orientia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Neoehrlichia, and Neorickettsia, and are significant yet under-recognised vector-borne febrile illnesses in Sri Lanka. Despite being a notifiable disease, gaps in understanding its spatial and temporal distribution hinder effective control and prevention. Therefore, the present study aimed at determining long-term epidemiological trends and environmental determinants of rickettsioses incidence in Sri Lanka between

Helicobacter pylori infection carrying the CagA gene may be associated with the diagnosis and disease progression of tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is associated with infectious diseases caused by pathogens such as Orientia tsutsugamushi (the causative agent of scrub typhus) and Brucella. However, the impact of H. pylori infection on tuberculosis (TB) remains unclear, and in particular, the clinical significance of infection with CagA-positive(CagA+) strains is worthy of exploration. METHODS: A total of 120 TB patients clinically diagnosed at the Affiliated Hospital of Youjiang Medical University for Nationalities and the Fourth People's Hospital of Nanning from June 202

Incidence of Scrub Typhus in Rural South India.

BACKGROUND: Hospital studies suggest that scrub typhus is a leading cause of severe undifferentiated fever in regions across Asia where the disease is endemic, but the population-based incidence of infection and illness has been little studied. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study to assess epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of scrub typhus in 37 villages in Tamil Nadu, India, where the disease is highly endemic. Study participants were visited every 6 to 8 weeks over a period of 2 years; a venous blood sample was obtained from those who had had fever since the last v
