Development and treatment of retrograde peri-implantitis involving a site with a history of failed endodontic and apicoectomy procedures: a series of reports.

Osseointegrated implants provide predictable restorative support for crowns, restorations, prosthesis abutments, and removable dentures. Their widespread use in recent years has produced different types of complications. Retrograde peri-implantitis, a lesion occurring at the periapical area of an osseointegrated implant, has recently been described. This paper presents a series of reports describing the occurrence and management of retrograde peri-implantitis involving implants replacing teeth with histories of failed endodontic and apicoectomy procedures.

Hemophilia and dental treatment.

Hemophilic patients must be thought of as special patients. Since routine dental procedures, however, do not usually involve bleeding, there is no contraindication to general dental treatment for hemophiliacs. Aspirin-containing compounds should never be prescribed. Caution must be used with local anesthetic block techniques. Preventive dentistry is vital to the younger hemophiliac; older hemophiliacs may require extensive treatment to restore mouths that have been neglected for years. Surgical dental procedures are now considered possible for hemophiliacs and may be performed on an outpatient

Post-trial costs, clinical outcomes, and dental service utilization after a randomized clinical trial for caries control among Finnish adolescents.

The aim of this study was to assess post-trial treatment costs, clinical outcomes [decayed, missing or filled surfaces (DMFS) scores], and utilization of dental services among adolescents who had participated in a randomized clinical trial (RCT) in Pori, Finland, in 2001-2005. At baseline the children were 11-12 yr of age and had had at least one active initial caries lesion. The children in the experimental group (n = 250) had been exposed to multiple measures for caries control, while those in the control group (n = 247) had received standard dental care. During the post-trial period (2005-2

Dental disease among adults with and without HIV in the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS).

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are prevalent and linked to systemic health outcomes. People with HIV may face elevated oral disease risk, yet data on dental disease in this population remain limited. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed oral health data collected from 2927 participants in the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (968 women with HIV [WWH], 450 women without HIV [WWoH], 941 men with HIV [MWH], 568 men without HIV [MWoH]) who had intraoral photographs collected and evaluated by dentist-researchers. We used log-binomial regression to examine associations between demographic

[The dental assessment of the patient waiting for a liver transplant].

Until the last several years liver transplantation was considered an experimental treatment procedure. Nowadays virtually any disease process, that is in terminal stage, is treatable with transplantation. The introduction of cyclosporine in 1980 and the recent use of OKT3 monoclonal antibody now allows a 5-year survival rate of 60-70%. The causes of early death of patients who survive after surgery are infective complications, multiorgan failure and acute rejection of the allograft. In the literature and in our experience, bacterial sepsis is the most common cause of deaths occurring during th

Fluoride in Drinking Water and Skeletal Fluorosis: a Review of the Global Impact.

When safe and adequate exposure of an essential trace element is exceeded it becomes potentially toxic. Fluoride is one classic example of such a double edged sword which both plays a fundamental role in the normal growth and development of the body for example the consumption of levels between 0.5-1.0 ppm via drinking water is beneficial for prevention of dental caries but its excessive consumption leads to development of fluorosis. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The abundance of fluorine in the environment as well as in drinking water sources are the major contributors to fluorosis. It is a serious publ

Teeth loss after teriflunomide treatment: Casual or causal? A short case series.

BACKGROUND: Teriflunomide is a once-daily oral immunomodulator approved for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) with a consistent safety profile in clinical trials. We report three cases of multiple teeth loss during teriflunomide treatment. CASE REPORTS: Case 1: a 39 year-old woman started teriflunomide for RRMS, switching from interferon beta. Four months later she complained about mandibular pain followed by the sudden loss of 4 teeth, in the absence of bleeding or trauma. Suspecting a causal role, we discontinued teriflunomide and started the accelerated elimina

Preorthodontic implant placement in the planned postorthodontic position: a simplified technique and clinical report.

Interdisciplinary cases can require orthodontic correction with implant anchorage prior to the placement of implant-supported restorations. Definitive implants for orthodontic anchorage offer several advantages compared to temporary attachment devices. Preorthodontic definitive implant placement requires accurate and detailed treatment planning to visualize the final orthodontic result and the optimal restoration position. This article describes a simplified method for creating a radiographic-surgical template for preorthodontic imaging and correct implant placement in the planned postorthodon
